FGCU M. Soc vs #1 Wake Forest Preview

After splitting their first two games on the road, the FGCU men's soccer team (1-1) prepare for their home opening game as they welcome Power 5 Conference team Wake Forest (2-0) on September 1 at 7 P.M.

Last Time Out:
The Eagles began the season on the road in the Carolinas with a split. They would fall to Charlotte 1-0 to start the season before defeating Presbyterian College 2-0.

Freshman O'Vante Mullings currently leads the team in goals. The Toronto native made his debut in the starting lineup against Charlotte and had a remarkable game against Presbyterian scoring both goals in the game with assists from sophomore Chris Clement.

Despite falling to Charlotte in his first start, redshirt sophomore Gustavo Vasconcelos (0-1) had a miraculous game finishing with 10 saves in the game.

Fellow redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Connor Gavigan (1-0) held Presbyterian down defensively with three saves in his sixth shutout with FGCU.

Scouting Wake Forest:
The Deacons are coming off of a successful two-game homestead at home.

The Deacons were ranked #5 in the nation prior to the start of the season, but after they defeated Indiana 2-1 in double overtime as well as ETSU by a score of 4-2, the Deacons jumped to being #1 in the nation.

Indiana was ranked #2 in the nation at the start of the season, but dropped to #6 after the loss to Wake Forest.

Offensively, sophomore Justin McMaster leads the team. In the game against ETSU, McMaster scored two goals in the game.

Junior goalkeeper Andreu Cases Mundet (2-0) has five total saves. All of the 2017 ACC Championship MVP's five saves were against Indiana.

Series History:
This will be the second time both teams play each other. The first time was on September 5, 2015 where the Deacons won 1-0 at Wake Forest. At that time, both were ranked in the top 25 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll (FGCU[19th], Wake Forest [20th]).
