The FGCU softball team (9-3) opened the Spring Break Invite with a 3-1 win over Fordham (1-11) Friday night at the FGCU Softball Complex.
"Tonight was a great win over a very quality opponent – don't let their record fool you," said head coach David Deiros. We were able to battle back and get enough run support for our pitching staff who did a fantastic job tonight keeping them at bay. I'm very proud of our kids tonight and their effort."
The visitors scratched a run across the board in the first inning off an error to take the early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, catcher Ahnie Jumper led the bottom half off with a double to dead center. Johneisha Rowe moved her over on a sac bunt as McKenna Batterton brought Jumper home hitting a ground ball to first.
FGCU took over the 2-1 lead thanks to a sac fly to left from Nicole Hayslip in the bottom of the fourth. Sammi Poehlman started the inning off with a walk, stole second and was moved to third on a sac bunt from Reedy Davenport. Hayslip then skied one to center to score Poehlman.
Starting pitcher Marissa Mesiemore exited after four frames scattering just three hits, fanned three batters while giving up one unearned run.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Green and Blue added some insurance scoring one run on three hits. With the bases loaded, Mikenzie Vaughn brought home pinch-runner Hannah Shemansky – running for Jumper who singled to lead off the inning.
Sarah Lawton faced 10 batters, striking out seven of them as she earned her first save of the year. Mesiemore moved to 5-2 overall in the circle.
At the dish, Vaughn finished 3-for-3 with one RBI as Jumper went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

FGCU Softball: FGCU Invitational Day Two Recap
The FGCU softball team (8-2) walked away with two wins Saturday night, first taking down Memphis (5-4), 5-1, followed by an 8-0 run-rule victory over UIC (2-2). In the process, the program recorded its 650th win overall.
"The two wins tonight were not easy and we knew that coming into the day," said head coach David Deiros. "Both games were very close, competitive and I'm glad we were able to bounce back against Memphis, after dropping one to them last night. We have one more game left Sunday afternoon against #24 Arkansas so we're excited to get back out there against another very good team. Lastly, it's such an amazing feat to get to 650 wins, so a huge thank you to everyone – Eagles past and present – that have been a part of this journey since the program's inception in 2003."
FGCU 5 | Memphis 1
Scoreless through four and a half frames, Hope Hernandez put the Eagles on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Abbey Thomas hit a one-out single as Hannah Shemansky would pinch-run. Up next, Hernandez drove the first pitch she saw to left center for the double, scoring Shemansky. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Jordyn Gendron plated home Hernandez with a single up the middle.
One batter later, Johneisha Rowe reached on an infield single but a fielding error at first allowed Gendron to score from third to make it 3-0 FGCU. In the bottom of the third, Maddy Johnson hit a leadoff single to get things going as Huber then reached on a fielding error. After both Eagles advanced one base on a pass ball, Johnson was plated home on a grounder from McKenna Batterton.
FGCU added another run in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of an RBI single from Johnson scoring Sammi Poehlman, who singled and stole second earlier.
The Eagles ended the contest via run-rule posting six runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by six hits including one UIC error. Morrell was hit with the bases loaded for a run as three-straight singles from Rowe, Batterton and Vaughn made it 6-0. Facing one out still, Reedy Davenport snuck a base hit through the right-side scoring Rowe first, then the throwing error to second base, allowed Batterton to win it for the Eagles, 8-0.

The kind of games we want to be able to play and compete in, are the ones like the second contest. We were battling back the entire way and had chances to take the lead but couldn't come up with it. I hope our kids build on that because we played well enough to win, it just didn't go our way."
FGCU 9 | Furman 1
Johneisha Rowe started the frame off with a single to center then stole second. McKenna Batterton made it 1-0 with a double to score in Rowe. In the bottom of the fourth, the Green and Blue broke out with four runs, scoring each one with two outs. Rowe knocked one to center to bring in Hannah Shemansky as Batterton then hit one up the middle to bring in Kacie Huber. Mikenzie Vaughn capped off the scoring with another base hit up the middle, plating home Batterton and Rowe.
Rowe collected her second RBI of the game scoring Jordyn Gendron who doubled to center to start the bottom of the fourth. The final crooked number of the contest came in the bottom of the sixth. Nicole Hayslip singled to left with one out as Ashley Hayes walked to put runners on first and second. Taylor Bauman then lined a hard hit to the shortstop that got into left field, scoring Hayslip. Two batters later, Reedy Davenport doubled down the left field line to plate pinch-runner Batterton and Bauman, ending the game via the run-rule.

FGCU Softball: FGCU Invitational Preview
The FGCU softball team will welcome four programs to the Nest this weekend hosting the FGCU Invitational, starting with a single game first versus Furman Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Last Time Out:
FGCU opened the 2020 season this past weekend going 4-1 in three days. During that stretch, freshman Johneisha Rowe batted .545, scored four runs while stealing three bases. In the circle, Marissa Mesiemore and Sarah Lawton each collected two wins. Lawton is 2-0 and holds a 0.70 ERA. Meanwhile, Hope Hernandez produced a team best four RBI over the weekend.
Scouting Furman:
The Paladins are 1-2 at the moment as they opened their season in Atlanta in the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech. Natalie Morgan hit .500 (4-for-8) with four RBI. In the circle, Morgan Smith has the lone victory, making three appearances in two starts.
This will be the first meeting between both programs.
Scouting #24 Arkansas:
The Razorbacks produced a 4-1 record this past weekend in New Mexico at the Troy Cox Classic. Sydney Parr led the offensive attack hitting .556 with 10 hits and four RBI. Arkansas has three players with at least six RBI. In the circle, four Razorbacks have seen action as Autumn Storms is 3-0 and has yet to concede a run. The squad is coming off a 38-win season in 2019 where it made the NCAA Tournament for a third-straight year.
FGCU and Arkansas have met one time prior to this weekend (2012, Arkansas defeated FGCU, 14-7).
Scouting Memphis:
The Tigers enter the Nest with a 3-2 record as they competed in the Hawaii Classic last weekend. In five starts, Sara Ann Davidson recorded a .455 average at the dish, driving in four runners. Memphis used five pitchers over the three-day stretch, led by Chyanne Ellett who went 2-1 in 11.2 innings of work.
FGCU trails the all-time series, 1-2. Last season, FGCU came out on top, 5-0.
Scouting UIC:
Illinois-Chicago will be opening its 2020 season in Southwest Florida this weekend. Last year, the Flames turned in a 32-23 overall record, going 20-4 in the Horzion League. Kayla Wedl returns for her senior year as she batted .453, leading the team in RBI (61), triples (four) and home runs (15). In the circle, Allie Trudeau collected a team-best 12 wins, making 23 starts in 33 appearances.
This will be the second meeting between FGCU and UIC – the Eagles claimed a 4-3 victory back in 2016 at home.

FGCU Softball: FGCU Kickoff Classic Day Two Recap
The FGCU softball team snagged two more games Saturday evening as the Eagles took down Georgetown (0-4), 5-0, followed by a 5-1 win over LIU (2-2) to end the night at the FGCU Softball Complex.
"We had two really good wins tonight and I just like the way we are competing in all aspects," said head coach David Deiros. "In the first game with Marissa, we got on [Georgetown] early and then we couldn't sustain that momentum but we were able to pitch and defend through it. Against LIU, they came out and hit us in the mouth. If McKenna doesn't make that play in center, that's a big first inning and a big hole for us to be in. Sarah settled down after that so I'm really proud of our kids for the effort."
FGCU 5 | Georgetown 0
Leadoff hitter Sammi Poehlman started off the bottom of the first with a single and swiped second. McKenna Batterton bunt singled to put runners on the corners. Poehlman was caught in a rundown at home during a fielder's choice off the bat of Haley Morrell but a RBI single from Reedy Davenport scored Batterton. Facing two outs, catcher Ahnie Jumper hit a two-run double to left-center to cap off the frame.
FGCU tacked on another run in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a Batterton double that brought home Kacie Huber. A five-run lead was more than enough for Marissa Mesiemore who retired the last nine batters she faced. The junior righty finished the night tossing six innings, striking out nine Hoyas in the process as she moves to 2-0. Emily Estroff worked the final frame, sitting down the Hoyas in order.
Batterton capped off the game going 4-for-4 with one double, three singles and an RBI.
FGCU 5 | LIU 1
The Sharks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as FGCU would be held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. In that frame, the Green and Blue used two hits on two errors to jump ahead 2-0. Johneisha Rowe singled and hustled to second on the first error as she scored with Morrell reaching on the frame's second throwing miscue. Three batters later, Hope Hernandez brought pinch-runner Hannah Shemansky home from third with a knock to left.
Holding onto the narrow lead, pitcher Sarah Lawton began to settle down and got three insurance runs in the sixth from the Eagles off a trio of hits. Hernandez came away with an RBI single while Maddy Johnson produced two runs with her base hit to center.
Lawton moves to 2-0 after tossing a complete five-hit game while striking out three Sharks. Rowe finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base, Hernandez went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

"Tonight was two very different games. The results were great for us in both cases but they couldn't have started any differently," said head coach David Deiros. "We took the big lead early and had to go ahead and fight off [Delaware's] advances in the last three innings. Boston College then took the lead and we just kept on battling and came away with the win in extra innings."
FGCU 4 | Delaware 1
FGCU wasted no time getting on the board scoring two runs on two hits. A pair of walks by Sammi Poehlman and Johneisha Rowe and a sac bunt single by Haley Morrell loaded the bags. Two batters later, Marissa Mesiemore roped a double to left for the 2-0 lead.

BC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and made it 3-0 in the third. FGCU responded though, in its own bottom half with two runs on one hit. Reedy Davenport sparked the inning reaching on an error as Abbey Thomas then walked. Batterton's fielder's choice bunt to the pitcher loaded the bags. Hope Hernandez's single up the middle gave the Green and Blue's its first hit along with two runs.
Davenport tied the game for FGCU with a double to left, bringing Poehlman in who reached on a single and scored from second after swiping the bag.
With the International Tiebreaker Rule now in effect – the last batter out of the previous inning gets placed on second – Ahnie Jumper was now in scoring position to start the eighth. BC intentionally walked Batterton as a sac bunt from Hernandez moved them to second and third. On the very next pitch, Jumper gave FGCU the walk-off win coming home on a wild pitch.
Sarah Lawton picked up the win after tossing three innings of work yielding just one hit, one walk, while fanning four batters. Davenport led the team at the plate with two hits, meanwhile, Hernandez ended the game with two RBI.

FGCU returns tomorrow night facing Georgetown (0-2) at 6 p.m. and end the night facing LIU (1-1) at 8:15 pm.

BC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and made it 3-0 in the third. FGCU responded though, in its own bottom half with two runs on one hit. Reedy Davenport sparked the inning reaching on an error as Abbey Thomas then walked. Batterton's fielder's choice bunt to the pitcher loaded the bags. Hope Hernandez's single up the middle gave the Green and Blue's its first hit along with two runs.
Davenport tied the game for FGCU with a double to left, bringing Poehlman in who reached on a single and scored from second after swiping the bag.
With the International Tiebreaker Rule now in effect – the last batter out of the previous inning gets placed on second – Ahnie Jumper was now in scoring position to start the eighth. BC intentionally walked Batterton as a sac bunt from Hernandez moved them to second and third. On the very next pitch, Jumper gave FGCU the walk-off win coming home on a wild pitch.
Sarah Lawton picked up the win after tossing three innings of work yielding just one hit, one walk, while fanning four batters. Davenport led the team at the plate with two hits, meanwhile, Hernandez ended the game with two RBI.

FGCU Softball: FGCU Kickoff Classic Preview
With the 2019 season behind them, the FGCU softball team will begin 2020 at home for 17 straight games. They will first begin with the three-day FGCU Kickoff Classic from Feb. 7-9. The Eagles will welcome Delaware, Boston College, Georgetown, Long Island University and U-Conn.
Last Time Out:
The Eagles finished last season 29-22 overall with a 13-7 record in the A-SUN where they finished 1-2 in the A-SUN Conference Tournament that they hosted at the FGCU Softball Complex. During their season, the Eagles earned opportunities to play in exhibition games against the Canadian and Japanese national teams in success and went 3-1 against three Power 5 Conference Schools with two of them being ranked in the Top 25 in the nation.
The team is led by head coach Dave Deiros, who enters his 18th season as head coach. He is joined by third-year assistant coaches Jamie Kertes and Jaime Edwards. Deiros enters with a 642-337-3 overall record.
Losses and Gains:
The Eagles did lose eight players, which included the 2016 A-SUN Pitcher and Freshman of the Year in Riley Randolph and one of their powerful bats in Racquel Fournet. In addition, the Eagles lost Kate Kelly, Bri Bennett and Brooke Clemens as they graduated.
Now sophomores Emily Hess and Kyleigh Taylor have transferred to different universities. Hess has transferred to NCAA DII Nova Southeastern, while Taylor went to NCAA DII Flagler College. Now senior Marcella Parrado has also parted ways from softball.
Despite losing eight players, Deiros did sign nine newcomers, five freshmen (Hannah Shemansky, Johneisha Rowe, Abbey Thomas, Nicole Hayslip and Jordyn Gendron) and four transfers (Maddy Johnson, Sarah Lawton, Hope Hernandez and Emily Estroff). Johnson and Lawton came from NJCAA Florida Southwestern (FSW).
Johnson, a infielder from Lake Wales, Florida, finished last season batting .370 with five home runs and 50 RBI while adding 32 stolen bases (second on the team). In her career with the Buccaneers, Johnson was a two-time member of the Suncoast All-Academic Team, FCSAA All-Academic Team, All-Suncoast Second Team and All-Suncoast First Team while helping the Buccaneers to two runner-up finishes in the NJCAA Region 8 State Tournament. Johnson is automatically eligible and will have two years of eligibility remaining
A pitcher from Waterbury, Conn, Lawton finished her sophomore campaign with FSW with a 12-2 record, 1.36 ERA, seven saves and 102 strikeouts. She joined Johnson as a member of the All-Suncoast First Team while also helping the Buccaneers to two runner-up finishes in the NJCAA Region 8 State Tournament. Like Johnson, Lawton is automatically eligible and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Hernandez, a junior infielder from Tampa, joined FGCU after spending her freshman and sophomore year at Troy University. She finished her sophomore campaign with the Trojans batting .226 with 21 hits and nine RBI. She will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Estroff, a sophomore pitcher/utility player from Coconut Creek, Fl, spent her freshman campaign at Villanova University. As a member of the Wildcats, Estroff appeared in 13 games batting .250 with three walks and three runs scored. She will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Scouting Delaware:
The Blue Hens finished last season 22-29 overall with a 7-14 record in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) but did not make it to the postseason.
The Blue Hens lost three seniors on their team, Anna Steinmetz, Sarah Coyne and Miranda O'Donald. Depsite that, they were able to land five newcomers, four freshman (Kate Hondru, Grace Beyer, Grace Rudolph and Emily Winburn and sophomore transfer Kailey Christian.
A pitcher and native of Bradenton, Florida, Christian joined Delaware after spending her freshman campaign at State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) where she led the Manatees to the FCSAA State Tournament after compiling a 22-4 overall with a 2.19 ERA and 196 strikeouts, while batting .366 with a home run and 36 RBI. She was named as a member of the All-Suncoast First Team, Suncoast All-Academic Team and the FCSAA All-State Second Team.
Side Note: I've seen Kailey play at SCF and she is a great pitcher. I mean she's one of only two pitchers I know that have three types of rise balls.
Key returners for the Blue Hens include sophomores Brooke Glanden and Brittany Mendoza and senior Sarah Piening. Glanden finished behind Steinmetz in home runs (7) with a team-leading 30 RBI, while batting .288 and being named a member of the CAA All-Rookie Team. Mendoza finished last season batting .299 with six home runs (third on the team) and 29 RBI (second on the team). Piening finished her junior campaign 14-15 with a 3.92 ERA and 98 strikeouts.
This will be the second all-time meeting between both teams as FGCU narrowly fell to Delaware in 2012, 6-4.
Scouting Boston College:
The Eagles went 18-35 overall and 4-20 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) last spring. Two returners in Emme Martinez led the attack batting .321, while Susanna Anderson posted six wins to go along with a 3.93 ERA.
FGCU leads the all-time series, 3-1.
Scouting Georgetown:
The Hoyas recorded a 14-35 record in 2019, going 6-13 in the Big East. Their top bat in Noelle Holiday (.347) comes back for her senior year as Diller London earned six wins last season in the circle.

The LIU Sharks are coming off a strong season after going 36-18 overall and 14-2 in the Northeast Conference (NEC). Kiana Cisneros led the Sharks last season with a .376 batting average, while Elena Valenzuela produced 19 wins in the circle with a 2.19 ERA.
FGCU leads the all-time series 12-4.
Scouting UConn:
The Huskies finished their 2019 season going 21-29 and 8-13 in American Athletic Conference (AAC). The team has a number of key players returning – Briana Marcelino (.359), Olivia Sappington (.337) led the squad in batting average. Meanwhile, Marybeth Olson collected 11 wins with a 2.18 ERA.
FGCU leads the all-time series 7-0.

FGCU Softball: A-SUN Conference Tournament Day Two Recap
The No. 3-seeded FGCU softball team (29-21) defeated No. 5 seed Kennesaw State (26-29), 2-0, Friday afternoon to head into the loser's semifinal bracket against UNF.
The Eagles and the Ospreys went through two weather delays in the second inning before the game was halted and postponed until 8 am Saturday morning as UNF holds a 5-0 lead.
"Our kids came out in that first inning and then our defense along with Riley [Randolph] made it stand up," said head coach David Deiros about the KSU contest. "We just didn't give them too many chances to breathe until the last inning and then we withstood their best shot."

Senior Kate Kelly ignited the offense with single to second as a grounder moved her into scoring position. Freshman of the Year Reedy Davenport then stepped in a roped an RBI double down the left-field line for the 1-0 lead.
Up next, sophomore Haley Morrell followed it up with a double of her own to left-center to give FGCU its 2-0 margin. Meanwhile, the two runs proved to be enough insurance for senior starting pitcher Riley Randolph. She limited the Owls to just two hits while giving up one walk, retiring the KSU side four different times.
The visitors threaten in the bottom of the seventh placing runners on first and second but a pair of pop flies to center and right closed out the game for the Eagles.

"We kind of imploded in one inning that at worse could've of been one run instead of two and that was the difference. It just means that our road to the championship just got a little bit longer but until they take the bats out of our hands, we still have a chance."
Without a score through three frames, FGCU got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Senior First Team All-Conference selection Kate Kelly began the bottom half with a single to third. The No. 3-seeded FGCU softball team (28-20) is set for a 1:30 p.m. battle on Wednesday against the No. 6-seeded UNF Ospreys (26-22) at the FGCU Softball Complex. The game was originally scheduled for 3 p.m., but was moved up due to weather concerns.
A-SUN Championship:
FGCU will play host to the 2019 A-SUN Softball Tournament Wednesday-Saturday. This will mark the third time FGCU will serve as hosts for the tournament, the first time since 2016. The winner of the event will earn the A-SUN's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship tournament.
The Green and Blue:
At the plate senior Kate Kelly leads the team in hits (54), batting average (.370) and stolen bases (18). Senior Racquel Fournet is hitting .316 while leading the team in RBI (28). Freshman Reedy Davenport owns a .293 BA and is second on the team in RBI (23).
In the circle, senior Riley Randolph has collected 17 wins in 26 starts, holding opposing batters to a .194 BA. She is currently 11th nationally in ERA (1.16), and 25th in strikeouts (209).
Sophomore Marissa Mesiemore is 10-7 with a 1.71 ERA in 23 appearances. During conference play, she posted a 0.86 ERA and went 7-3.
The pitching staff as a whole has combined to post a 1.75 ERA which sits 11th in the country.
A-SUN Awards and Accolades:
Before the tournament began, four Eagles received awards and accolades for the team: Kelly, Fournet, Davenport and Randolph.
Kelly was named a member of the A-SUN All-Conference First Team.
"Kate has had a fantastic senior year and she's really solidified our leadoff spot since the middle of the year," said head coach Dave Deiros. "Our offense is best when she sets the table for us."
Davenport was named on the A-SUN All-Freshman Team along with being named A-SUN Freshman of the Year. FGCU hasn't earned A-SUN Freshman of the Year since the 2016 season (Randolph).
"Reedy has made an immediate impact for us on both sides of the ball," said head coach David Deiros "She's an exceptional athlete with really good instincts."
Fournet and Randolph were both named on the A-SUN All-Conference Second Team. This was the second time Fournet has won the accolade.
A-SUN Tournament History:
Entering this week's bracket, the Eagles are 13-10 (.565) all-time in A-SUN tournament games. Last May, the Green and Blue entered the tournament with a first round bye and the No. 2 seed. FGCU took down the third-seeded USC Upstate Spartans (left the A-SUN after the season) in its first game before falling in the next two games to top-seeded KSU (4-2) and the Spartans (6-3, 10 innings).

Scouting the Ospreys:
Senior Dominica Cocuzza leads the Ospreys in hitting with a .378 BA as she's driven in a team-best 36 runners while senior Navia Penrod is second on the team with 24 RBI and is batting .373. She also leads the team in stolen bases with 13.
In the circle, UNF has thrown four pitchers as they've combined for a 2.84 ERA. Redshirt senior Sydney Matzko is 13-11 overall with a team-low 2.41 ERA in 32 outings.

A-SUN Awards and Accolades:
Before the tournament began, four Eagles received awards and accolades for the team: Kelly, Fournet, Davenport and Randolph.
Kelly was named a member of the A-SUN All-Conference First Team.
"Kate has had a fantastic senior year and she's really solidified our leadoff spot since the middle of the year," said head coach Dave Deiros. "Our offense is best when she sets the table for us."
Davenport was named on the A-SUN All-Freshman Team along with being named A-SUN Freshman of the Year. FGCU hasn't earned A-SUN Freshman of the Year since the 2016 season (Randolph).
"Reedy has made an immediate impact for us on both sides of the ball," said head coach David Deiros "She's an exceptional athlete with really good instincts."
Fournet and Randolph were both named on the A-SUN All-Conference Second Team. This was the second time Fournet has won the accolade.
"What else can I say about Riley and Racquel?" said Deiros. "They've had phenomenal careers with the Green and Blue and their names will be forever etched in our record books."
A-SUN Tournament History:
Entering this week's bracket, the Eagles are 13-10 (.565) all-time in A-SUN tournament games. Last May, the Green and Blue entered the tournament with a first round bye and the No. 2 seed. FGCU took down the third-seeded USC Upstate Spartans (left the A-SUN after the season) in its first game before falling in the next two games to top-seeded KSU (4-2) and the Spartans (6-3, 10 innings).

FGCU Softball vs Lipscomb Day Two Recap
Sophomore Marissa Mesiemore joined a unique group of pitchers, but the FGCU softball team (28-20, 13-7 A-SUN) lost a 1-0, 10-inning heartbreaker to Lipscomb (38-13-1, 16-4 A-SUN) in the regular season finale for both teams at the FGCU softball complex on Friday. Mesiemore went the distance in the circle, becoming just one of three players in the program's Division-I era to toss a complete game of at least 10 innings, joining Shelby Morgan (11 innings, 04/17/12) and Catherine McDaniel (10 innings, 04/03/11). She walked just two while allowing eight hits and striking out three.
"Marrisa was an absolute gem," FGCU head coach David Deiros said. "She was tough and matched (Lipscomb starter Mandy) Jordan pitch-for-pitch. She struggled a little bit in the middle of the game, but regrouped and got herself together."
Lipscomb scored the game's lone run after taking advantage of the international tiebreaker rule in the 10th. Hannah DeVault launched a sacrifice fly to center to score Graysen Gladden, who started the inning on second and advanced to third via a sacrifice bunt from Peyton Ward.
Jordan combined for 17 innings over the past two days to help Lipscomb claim the ASUN's regular season championship and the top seed in next week's postseason tournament. She had two complete games and a save while allowing just six hits over 17 innings against the Eagles.
Offensively, FGCU totaled just four hits and had 13 infield pop outs, including six in foul territory. With pinch runner Sammi Poehlman on second as the potential tying run, the Green and Blue had three straight infield pop outs in the bottom of the 10th, including one on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt with nobody out.
"That's just not going to win any games," Deiros said. "We had empty at bats, didn't move runners, didn't make solid contact and didn't make their defense make any plays. (Jordan) will win pitcher of the week, and she deserves it, but we made it really easy on her."

In the third, Lipscomb loaded the bases with two outs, but she forced a groundout to end the threat. The sixth inning featured her second 1-2-3 inning, but McKenna Batterton made a highlight reel catch while diving down the left field line into foul territory to end the inning.
In the eighth, Lipscomb put the first two runners on and Mesiemore had a 3-1 count on the next batter, but she induced three consecutive outs in part to a pair of nice defensive plays from Mikenzie Vaughn at third.
Taylor Bauman nearly ended the game in walk-off fashion the next half inning, but her deep line drive to left was caught on the warning track.

The FGCU softball team (28-17, 13-4 A-SUN) was narrowly edged by Stetson (16-28, 5-12 A-SUN), 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex.
"Congratulations to our seniors today. I am glad that we could honor them before the game for everything they've done for this program over the past few years," said head coach David Deiros said. "We have some more work to do this week against Lipscomb and also as we head into the A-SUN Tournament."
Before the contest, the Eagles honored their five seniors in Bri Bennett, Brooke Clemens, Kate Kelly, Racquel Fournet and Riley Randolph.
The Eagles' bats were kept quiet midway through the contest as they accounted for three hits while stranding four runners. Starting pitcher Randolph went six full innings scattering five hits as she fanned six Hatters with no walks. Her fourth strikeout of the game in the bottom of the fourth went down as her 200th of the year becoming just the third pitcher in FGCU history to hit the 200 mark in one season.
Through nine complete and with no score, the international tiebreaker rule went into effect in the 10th – the last batter out in the previous inning is placed on second to start the next frame. Stetson broke out with three runs on four hits to take the ball game's first lead.
FGCU commenced the bottom of the 10th with freshman McKenna Batterton on second base. With one out, sophomore Haley Morrell lined a single up the middle to put runners on the corners. FGCU Softball vs Stetson Day One Recap
The FGCU softball team (28-16, 13-3 A-SUN) took sole possession of first place in the A-SUN with a pair of wins over Stetson (15-28, 4-12 A-SUN) Saturday afternoon. In game one the Eagles defeated the Hatters, 2-1, in walk-off fashion before snagging game two, 3-0.
"Riley [Randolph], Marissa [Mesiemore] and the defense were outstanding. We did just enough on offense – especially in game one – to get the sweep," head coach David Deiros said. "Now we turn our attention in celebrating Bri [Bennett], Kate [Kelly], Racquel [Fournet], Brooke [Clemens] and Randolph tomorrow."
FGCU 2 | Stetson 1
The Eagles struggled early on leaving a total of four runners on the bags through three frames as Stetson took the 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth using one hit and one error.
FGCU threatened in the sixth but would strand two as they rallied in the final inning facing one out. Sophomore Farley Callaghan commenced the inning with a leadoff single through the left-side. Freshman McKenna Batterton then got onboard getting plunked on her right elbow. Senior Kate Kelly executed a perfect sac bunt to move both runners into scoring position. This allowed sophomore Haley Morrell to dig in the box and drive a 1-1 pitch to right-center, clearing the bags for the walk-off win.
Starting senior pitcher Riley Randolph moves to 17-7, scattering five hits while giving up just one run. She fanned seven batters in the process.
FGCU 3 | Stetson 0
Game two saw the Eagles jump on the board in back-to-back innings. In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Reedy Davenport led off with a knock to up the middle. After a grounder moved her to second, Callaghan brought her in hitting a bloop single down the right-field line. In the fifth, the Green and Blue produced a pair of runs using three hits and one error.
Batterton singled to start the inning as freshman Ashley Hayes was called into run for her, who then raced to second off a sac bunt from Kelly. Morrell then reached on an error and stole second to put runners at second and third. Senior Racquel Fournet stepped in and laced an RBI single to center. Davenport matched it with a base hit of her own to make it 3-0 FGCU.
Over the final two frames, starting sophomore pitcher Marissa Mesiemore gave up just one hit with a pair of strikeouts to secure the shutout for the Eagles. She is now 10-4 in the circle, limiting the Hatters to just two hits. In the process, the Bushnell native now matches her win-total from her freshman season.
At the plate, Davenport capped off game two going 2-for-3 with one RBI. In both games combined, Batterton finished the day going 3-for-4.
With both wins, FGCU now sets a program-record for most consecutive A-SUN victories at 10 (previously eight on two occasions, 2008, 2012).

Before Sunday's contest, FGCU will honor its five seniors in Bri Bennett, Brooke Clemens, Racquel Fournet, Kate Kelly and Riley Randolph.

FGCU is coming off a two-game road sweep of UNF last weekend. Due to weather, one game was canceled. Kelly recorded a total of three RBI, posting a .333 batting average. Meanwhile, Fournet hit .500 with a pair of RBI. In the circle, Randolph and sophomore Marissa Mesiemore each collected a win as Mesiemore yielded no earned runs.
With both wins, FGCU secured a spot in the upcoming 2019 ASUN Tournament.

The FGCU softball team (26-16, 11-3 A-SUN) took two games from UNF (22-19, 4-10 A-SUN) Saturday afternoon, edging the Ospreys 4-3 in game one, followed by a 6-3 score in game two at the UNF Softball Complex.
"Today we played two solid softball games. Marissa [Mesiemore] and Riley [Randolph] did a good job of containing their bats," said head coach David Deiros. "We made all the routine plays and a couple of special ones along the way. More importantly, we swung the bats well and put pressure on them in every inning. We scored 10 runs today altogether but we probably left another 20 on base."
FGCU 4 | UNF 3
Without a score through three frames, FGCU finally got on the board producing two runs on one hit along with a pair of errors in the fourth. Two straight errors put senior Brooke Clemens and junior Mikenzie Vaughn on. Freshman Ashley Hayes, who ran for Clemens, swiped third to put runners in scoring position. Two batters later, Sammi Poehlman hit a chopper to third for the first run as freshman McKenna Batterton smacked a single to center for the 2-0 lead.
UNF responded with a run in its half but the Eagles added the insurance in the sixth. Sophomore Farley Callaghan started the frame with a walk and a stolen base for FGCU. One batter later, Batterton singled to center to put Eagles on the corners. Senior Kate Kelly then dug in and cleared the bags with a double to right.
The Ospreys brought it to with one scoring two in the bottom of the sixth but senior starting pitcher Riley Randolph thwarted any chance of a comeback striking out two in the seventh, followed by a 5-3 putout for the final. The SCF softball team (22-16, 9-3 A-SUN) pulled away with their second sweep in conference play as they defeated Jacksonville (13-28, 1-12) in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon by scores of 7-1 and 5-2. With the wins, the Eagles are now 27-8 against the Dolphins.
"I'm really proud of what our kids did today because we were great against their entire [pitching] staff," said head coach David Deiros. "It didn't matter if it was their No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 pitcher, our team did an awesome job. It's a sign that we're starting to figure out that we have to plan ahead, make adjustments and get after it on who we face."
Game One:
For game one, Deiros sent sophomore Marissa Mesimore to the mound while JU head coach Erica Ayers sent junior Alyssa Bilodeau to counter.
After a scoreless first, the Eagles would begin the onslaught of offense in the bottom of the second. FGCU Soffball vs Jacksonville Day One Recap
The FGCU softball team (22-16, 7-3 A-SUN) defeated Jacksonville (13-27, 1-9 A-SUN) by a score of 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex. Due to rain following game one, both teams will play a doubleheader Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m.
"Riley [Randolph] was great in the circle today keeping the Jacksonville bats' at bay," head coach David Deiros said. "We had some great timely hitting today from Kate [Kelly], Racquel [Fournet], and Brooke [Clemens] in the sixth to put us in front. Overall good performance and we're looking forward to tomorrow's doubleheader."
It was a pitcher's duel early on as FGCU registered one hit through four frames. Meanwhile, in the circle, Randolph struck out the first six batters she faced. In the process, she produced a new career single-season high in the first with her 161st strikeout of the season, a mark she set back in 2017 (160).
FGCU's offense began to turn its wheels in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Kate Kelly ripped a leadoff double through the right side for her second hit of the game. Two batters later, senior Racquel Fournet plated Kelly home on a single down the right-field line. Junior Sammi Poehlman ran for Fournet as freshman Reedy Davenport stepped in and produced an infield hit to put runners on the corners. Freshman Ashley Hayes would run for Davenport and steal second.
Facing runners now in scoring position, senior Brooke Clemens connected on a double to score both runners for the 3-1 lead.
Jacksonville tacked on a run in the top of the seventh and had runners on the corners with two away but a pop fly to right sealed the win for the Green and Blue.
Randolph moved to 14-7 as she fanned eight Dolphins while scattering three hits in her 16th complete outing of the year.

FGCU is coming off a three-game road sweep of North Alabama last weekend in which they outscored the Lions 13-3. Sophomore Marissa Mesiemore collected all three wins over the weekend giving up no earned runs in 17.1 innings as she limited UNA batters' to a .164 average. Her overall week consisted of a 4-0 record in the circle (win against FAU Apr. 3) as she was named the A-SUN Pitcher of the Week for the first time Monday afternoon. The Bushnell native became the second Eagle pitcher to collect each win in a three-game A-SUN series since Jaclyn Owen in 2013 against Northern Kentucky.
Another sophomore in Farley Callaghan excelled at the plate over the weekend, hitting the game-winning home run Saturday in the 1-0 win. She followed it up Sunday with another homer as she capped off her day going 2-for-2 with two RBI.
FGCU's scheduled doubleheader at FIU this past Wednesday was cancelled due to field conditions and there will not be a makeup date.

Scouting the Dolphins:
JU is currently on a 10-game skid as this will mark its second A-SUN road series of the season. At the plate, junior Maryland transfer Kassidy Cross leads the Dolphins in hitting (.388) as she's posted 52 hits. Meanwhile, sophomore Abby Genest has driven in a team-best 19 runners.
In the circle, JU has utilized four pitchers with junior Alyssa Bilodeau collecting a team-bets seven wins with a 3.10 ERA. Opposing players are batting .262 off the Dolphins' staff as they hold a collective 3.69 ERA.
FGCU leads the all-time series 24-8, winning the last four contests while outscoring JU, 24-8.
