FGCU S&D: CCSA Championship Day Three Recap

Day three of the 2020 CCSA Championship proved to be one of the strongest for FGCU swimming & diving (8-8-1, 4-1 CCSA), as 21 Eagles qualified for scoring finals. The team finished the day still in second place with 889 points, behind first-place Liberty (1,023) and ahead of third-place UIW (664.5).

Due to a scoring issue, full results were not released upon completion of Friday's events at the Jones Aquatic Center. Further information, including FGCU's times and scoring finishes, will be released upon completion of the CCSA's review.

Both junior Petra Halmai and freshman Julia Rodriguez earned top finishes during the day's competition, as Halmai took home the 100 Breast and Rodriguez claimed the 100 Fly.

"What a fantastic day for our team," head coach Dave Rollins said. "Petra (Halmai) setting a CCSA and school record in the 100 Breast and Julia (Rodriguez) winning her first-ever CCSA title in the 100 Fly were both huge swims. Seven out of our 21 scoring opportunities today were done by athletes whom were on the scoring team a year ago. This is a young team that is coming into its own and it's been awesome to see. The energy can be felt all over the pool deck. It's contagious and I can't wait to see what tomorrow will bring."

Senior Elizabeth Zeiger also medaled during today's events, as she touched the wall second in the 400 IM with a season-best time of 4:20.21.

Additionally, the Eagles were represented on the podium by the 400-yard medley relay entry comprised of freshman Claire McAtee, Halmai, Rodriguez and sophomore Wiktoria Czarnecka. The quartet placed second, finshing behind Liberty.

FGCU S&D: CCSA Championship Day Two Recap

After wrapping up day two of the 2020 CCSA Championship, the FGCU swimming & diving team (8-8-1, 4-1 CCSA) checks in at second place with 438 points. FGCU ranks between first-place Liberty (581 points) and third-place UIW (394 points).

Thursday's competition was highlighted by sophomore Wiktoria Czarnecka , whose NCAA B Cut time and personal best of 22.40 in the 50-yard freestyle won her a gold medal. In addition to becoming the eighth-straight Eagle to win the event, she is FGCU's second CCSA champion at this year's meet, as freshman Reese Wakefield took home yesterday's 3m dive title.

"In the team standings, this day is our weakest," head coach Dave Rollins said. "We will only get stronger as the meet continues. To see our freshmen step up today was amazing. Half our swims today were from our freshman class, swimming best times and scoring big points for the team was awesome. Congratulations to Liz (Zeiger) on placing third in the IM, setting a new best time and moving into ninth in school history. Tori (Czarnecka). Wow. Absolutely amazing. She continues an incredible 50 Free tradition for FGCU, not only taking the win but swimming the third-fastest time in school history. The energy can be felt all over the pool deck. This team is in a great spot heading into tomorrow and we will look to carry the momentum forward."

Day two's final sessions began with the 200 Free relay, which saw the team of freshman Hailey Jerew, Czarnecka, sophomore Meghan Schienvar and freshman Lucija Sulenta pick up a second-place finish. The freshman duo of Hannah VanDress and Michaela Sizemore each qualified for the B final, where they placed 11th and 13th, respectively. Classmate Kaja Reinhardt rounded out the Green and Blue scoring in the long-distance event by winning the C Final, good for 17th place overall.

Senior Elizabeth Zeiger represented FGCU as the team's first individual in an A Final during the second day of competition, as she qualified in the 200 IM. She laid down a personal record (2:01.77) en route to claiming a third place finish in the event. Freshman Anna Hogan also added points, finishing 12th overall.

The Eagles combined for 71 points in that event alone, as a total of four individuals earned spots in scoring finals. Both Jerew and Schienvar earned spots in the B Final, while Sulenta represented the Green and Blue in the C Final.

FGCU S&D: CCSA Championship Day One Recap

At the end of the first day of the 2020 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championship, the FGCU swimming & diving team (8-8-1, 4-1 CCSA) sat at the top of the team standings. The Eagles earned 230 points to lead the field, followed by Liberty (223) and UIW (196) to round out the top three.

The 230 points are the most earned by any team in the CCSA on day one of the championship. Liberty's 219 from last year's meet stood as the previous record.

Freshman diver Reese Wakefield became the team's first individual champion of the meet, as she took home the 3m board with a final score of 310.00.

"This was a great first day," head coach Dave Rollins said. "We had a huge move-up in the 800 Free relay and a new season-best in the 200 medley. That was awesome to see. Our divers were also on fire. Congratulations to Reese for winning the title and for Delaney, Alyssa and Beau (Keene) for making the final in their first CCSA Championship. They have been so strong and fantastic teammates all year, so it's great to see hard work pay off. In addition, Natalie (Keffer) finished 11th in that event, adding more points for us."

In the first event of the day, the team of junior Petra Halmai, sophomore Meghan Schienvar, senior Elizabeth Zeiger and freshman Kaja Reinhardt laid down a 7:22.24 in the 800-yard freestyle relay, good for a second-place finish. That time was a 14-second drop from the Eagles' previous best from this season and bested third-place UIW by 1.63 seconds.

Earlier in the day, the diving prelims had seen a league-best four Eagles qualify for the 3m final, as Wakefield and her classmates Delaney Nelson, Alyssa Schmidt and Isabeau Keene all earned their spots in the eight-diver field. The final, which followed the opening relay, saw Nelson finish fifth with a score of 261.15, followed by seventh-place Schmidt (243.40) and eighth-place Keene (240.55) in addition to Wakefield's heroics. In that event alone, FGCU combined for a whopping 102 points.

The 200-yard medley relay was the day's final event. Entering with a seeded time of 1:41.45, the quartet of freshman Lucija Sulenta, Halmai, freshman Julia Rodriguez and sophomore Wiktoria Czarnecka swam a 1:40.54, good for second place. While the Liberty Flames did pick up their second relay win of the meet, the victory was not enough to overtake the Eagles for first place.

The CCSA Championships will continue on Thursday, beginning with the 10 a.m. morning prelim session. The afternoon session is slated for a 6 p.m. start and will see the finals for the 200 Free relay, the 500 Free, the 200 IM and the 50 Free.

FGCU S&D vs Stony Brook Recap

The FGCU swimming & diving team earned over a 100-point margin of victory in its dual against Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Aquatics Complex. The Eagles (8-5-1, 4-1 CCSA) defeated the SeaWolves by a score of 178-65 through 13 events.

Senior Cassidy Fry and freshman Julia Rodriguez were the highest-scoring individual swimmers of the day, combining for 31 total points. Fry earned first-place finishes in both the 100- and 50-yard freestyle events, while Rodriguez touched the wall first in the 500 Free and placed second in the 200 IM.

The Eagles were also boosted by another strong performance by freshman diver Reese Wakefield, who swept the 1m and 3m boards for the second-straight week. Wakefield outscored opponents by almost a combined total of 50 points through both events.

"It was a great day," head coach Dave Rollins said. "Some of the athletes got another shot at the events they competed in a week ago, but most of them had the chance to swim something completely different. When it comes to swimming different events, you never know what to expect, but they did a great job. The support is always there and they're always cheering each other on. It's great that we have the strength to be flexible in our lineup. For instance, Julia (Rodriguez) swam the 500 Free, which is not necessarily in her wheel house, but for she came out and won the event which was really neat."

Including Fry and Rodriguez, seven different Eagles earned first-place finishes in the meet against Stony Brook (4-5, 0-1 America East). Both senior Elizabeth White and freshman Claire McAtee tallied 12 points apiece, as they each contributed first and third-place finishes. White won the 100 Breast and finished third in the mile, while McAtee claimed the 100 Back and finished third in the 50 Free.

Freshman Hannah VanDress, sophomore Wiktoria Czarnecka and junior Petra Halmai added top finishes for the Green and Blue, as well. VanDress finished first in the mile, Czarnecka won the 100 Fly and Halmai was triumphant in the 200 Free.

In addition to individual success, the Eagles picked up a pair of wins in both relay events. The team of freshman Lucija Sulenta, Halmai, Rodriguez and freshman Kaja Reinhardt won the 400-yard medley relay by over six seconds to open up the meet. The group of sophomore Joely Merriman, Sulenta, Czarnecka and Halmai finished the day with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Of today's 13 events, the Eagles finished first in all but the 200 IM, where Stony Brook's Reagan McDonald edged Rodriguez by just 0.01 seconds.

The meet against the SeaWolves marked the second-to-last time that the Green and Blue will compete at the FGCU Aquatics Complex this season. The team's last home meet will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25 and will feature a matchup against the FIU Panthers. Prior to the competition, Rollins and his staff will honor the six members of this year's graduating class.

Before the meet against the Panthers, the Eagles are set to hit the road for back-to-back clashes with FAU (Jan. 17) and Miami (Jan. 18). Competition against the Owls is slated for a 5 p.m. start time at the FAU Aquatic Center. The following day, FGCU will face off against the Hurricanes at Noon at the Norman Whitten Pool.

FGCU S&D vs Liberty/Illinois State/Tulane Recap

In its first meet of 2020, the FGCU swimming & diving team (7-5-1, 4-1 CCSA) finished with a 1-1-1 mark against Illinois State, Tulane and Liberty on Saturday at the FGCU Aquatics Complex. The Eagles downed the Red Birds 183-35, earned a 112-112 draw against Tulane and were defeated by CCSA rival Liberty by a score of 131-93.

"There were a lot of good things that happened today and it was great to see Joely (Merriman) get a chance to compete for the first time for us," head coach Dave Rollins said. "The girls were really tough today. Petra (Halmai) was as competitive as she has been throughout the whole season and it's always fun watching her compete. I never know what to expect coming off the holidays, but it was great to see everyone back and racing again. We have plenty of time before CCSAs when we will see Liberty again."

In the first event of the afternoon, the Green and Blue quartet of freshman Julia Rodriguez, junior Petra Halmai, senior Cassidy Fry and sophomore Wiktoria Czarnecka earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team beat out third-place Tulane (1-5, 0-0 American) by almost a full second.

Halmai then found individual success in the 400 IM, as she picked up a second-place finish. She also earned crucial points for the Eagles in the 100-yard butterfly (second place) and the 100 Breast (second place).

Czarnecka earned the team's only first-place finish of the day in a swimming event as she took home the 50 Free. She bested Liberty (7-2, 3-0 CCSA) senior Colleen Donlin by a little over 0.3 seconds en route to the win. The sophomore also scored points for FGCU in the 100 Free, where her time of 53.35 was good for a fourth-place finish.

The team also picked up early points in the 3m dive, as a trio of Eagle freshmen scored in the event. Reese Wakefield earned her fourth title on the 3m board with a score of 264.00. Delaney Nelson and Isabeau Keene rounded out the scoring with third and fourth place finishes to add 13 points to the team's total.

While Halmai paced the Eagles in the 100 Fly, she was followed closely by Fry and Rodriguez who finished third and fourth, respectively. Rodriguez earned her highest individual finish of the day in the 100-yard backstroke, where she touched the wall second.

Seniors Elizabeth White and Emily Glinecke finished within 0.3 seconds of each other in the 100 Breast. White's time of 1:07.09 earned her a fifth-place finish. She and Halmai combined for five points, while Glinecke finished just outside of the scoring cut-off in sixth place.

In the last swimming event of the day, the team of Czarnecka, Fry, sophomore Joely Merriman and freshman Kaja Reinhardt finished fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. While Liberty had secured its win over FGCU at this point, Tulane only held a slight edge over the home team. Merriman made her debut after transferring from Arizona State.

The final score of the meet was determined by the 1m diving event. Luckily for the Eagles, the trio of Wakefield, Nelson and Keene delivered and finished first, third and fourth like they did on the 3m board. Wakefield's win in the final event was the third of her rookie campaign.

"The divers continued to do a phenomenal job," Rollins commented. "It's been a long time since we've had such a strong group of divers. To have them perform as well as they did was exciting to see and they kept us in it against Tulane."

Though the Eagles did drop their first conference match of the season by falling to Liberty, the team was able to close in on the Tulane squad that finished fourth at the Phill Hansel Invitational. At that invite, the Green Wave outscored FGCU by 162 points. FGCU also earned its largest margin of victory of the 2019-20 season, besting Illinois State (1-2, 0-1 Valley) by 148 points.

Up Next:
FGCU will remain at the Nest and prepare to host Stony Brook (4-4, 0-1 America East) in an 11 a.m. meet on Saturday, Jan. 11. The competition against the SeaWolves will be held on Staff Appreciation Day at the FGCU Aquatics Complex and fans are encouraged to participate in a white out.

FGCU S&D vs Liberty/Illinois State/Tulane Preview

After a much needed holiday break, the FGCU swimming and diving team (6-4, 4-0 CCSA) return to action for the start of 2020 at the FGCU Swimming Complex Saturday, January 4 at noon. The Eagles will welcome CCSA foe Liberty (6-2, 2-0 CCSA), Illinois State (1-1, 0-1 Valley) and Tulane (0-5) for the matchup. The competition will be scored as separate dual meets, meaning that each team will be scored individually against the other three opposing teams. In addition to the three aforementioned squads, Division III national champion Denison will be sending its divers to participate in the meet, but as non-scoring competitors.

Last Time Out:
The Eagles closed out 2019 in Houston as they competed in the Phill Hansel Invitational where they finished ninth out of 13 teams.

In the swimming portion, it was junior Petra Halmai that took over the Invitational as she set two records in the 200 breastroke on day three of the invitational finishing with a time of 2:10.86. This broke the previous school record, held by her (2:11.21) and as a new CCSA Conference record. As a result, Halmai was named CCSA Swimmer of the Week.

Over the course of the three-day invitational, Halmai qualified for the A Finals in four different individual events. In addition to her second-place finish in the 200 Breast, Halmai achieved the same feat in the 200-yard butterfly after swimming a 1:59.49. While her individual finishes in the 200 Breast and 200 Fly events highlighted her performances, she also made it to the A Finals in both the 200 IM and the 100 Breast. Swimming against a highly-competitive field, she finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.12) and seventh in the 200 IM (2:01.20). Halmai also swam on three of FGCU's relays throughout the invitational. She helped lead the 200-yard medley relay team to a third-place finish, swimming a 27.92-second split in the breaststroke. Her 1:53.78 split in the 800 Free Relay helped team to secure an eighth-place finish and she swam a 1:00.18 split in the 400 Medley Relay, despite her group's entry being disqualified.

"The conference saw a lot of impressive performances from many schools over the weekend, so for Petra to receive this honor is something special," head coach Dave Rollins said. "She has been dialed in on another level this year and is seeing her hard work pay off in a big way. Setting a school and conference record is a special achievement. Congratulations to Petra."

Meanwhile, the Eagles also had strong performances from freshmen Michaela Sizemore and classmate Hannah VanDress in the 1650-yard freestyle.

Freshman Reese Wakefield has also been racking up CCSA weekly honors, as she has been tabbed Diver of the Week four times in her rookie campaign. That number of selections matches the CCSA freshman record. So far, Wakefield has won three titles in the 3m event and two on the 1m board.

Additional Blue and Green Blood:
The Eagles were able to land two newcomers for the 2020 spring semester: Alina Haseloff and Joely Merriman.

Alina Haseloff:
A native of Berlin, Germany, Haseloff joins FGCU as a freshman on the team swimming freestyle. Haseloff has earned top 10 finishes in the Berlin Short Distance Championship and Gothaer Versicherungen Cup.

Joley Merriman:
Merriman joins FGCU as a sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining after spending her freshman year and half of her sophomore year at Arizona State where she swims backstroke and freestyle.

Scouting Liberty:
The Flames are coming off of finishing sixth out of nine teams in their hosted TYR '85 Invite while seeing five swimmers compete in the Toyota US Open in Atlanta.

Junior Payton Keiner finished in first place in the 200 yard backstroke, lowering her season best by over five seconds and winning in NCAA B cut time of 1:53.75. In fact, the three-time CCSA Champion leads the conference in both the 100 back (54.71) and 200 back (1:53.75).

Redshirt junior Mikayla Herich finished second in the 1,650 freestyle in 16:51.74, which was the fastest in the event by any CCSA swimmer so far this season.

Scouting Illinois State:
This weekend's meet will mark just the fifth time that the Redbirds have competed during its 2019-20 slate. The Red Birds opened up their season with a decisive, 182-97 victory over Butler. After some competition against in-state foes Illinois and Southern Illinois, the team fell 181-119 in a meet against conference opponent Indiana State. The Red Birds wrapped up 2019 by finishing sixth at the Purdue Invite.

Junior Caroline Lecoeur has received Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the Week honors three times throughout this season. She has turned in multiple NCAA Diving Zone qualifying performances, as well as broken the school record on the 3m board.

Scouting Tulane:
The Green Wave travels to Fort Myers in search of its first dual win of the 2019-20 season. Despite a rocky start to its dual meet slate, the Green Wave finished 2019 strong by earning a fourth-place finish at the Phill Hansel Invitational. At that same meet, the Eagles finished ninth.

Senior Olivia Johnson has had one of the team's strongest individual seasons, as she has clocked two qualifying standards for the 2020 Olympic Trials. Most recently, she swam a 2:16.99 in the 200 IM at the Toyota U.S. Open (Dec. 5).

Scouting Denison:
As noted, Denison (2-2, 1-0 NCAC) is an NCAA DIII team and represent the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) and are known as the Big Red. The Big Red last competed in their hosted Denison Invitational where they finished in second place behind Eastern Michigan (NCAA DI). As far as their 2-2 record, the two wins were against Xavier University (154-107) and NCAC conference rival Kenyon (195-105) while the two losses were to Ohio State (80.5-214.5) and Cincinnati (73.5-226.5).

Series History:
This will be the first time FGCU faces Illinois State, Tulane and Denison, FGCU remains 5-1 against the Lady Flames.

FGCU S&D: Phill Hansel Invitational Day Three Recap

After the final day of competition at the Phill Hansel Invitational, FGCU swimming & diving (6-4, 4-0 CCSA) earned a ninth-place finish among the 13-team field. Day three of the invitational was highlighted by junior Petra Halmai's record-setting performance in the 200 Breast; Halmai's time of 2:10.86 eclipsed the previous school record, held by her, of 2:11.21. That time also stands as a new CCSA Conference record.

"What an incredible final session for our team," head coach Dave Rollins said. "Petra setting the school record in the 200 Breast was a big surprise, as she has her Olympic qualifying meet in a couple of weeks. Ultimately, the relay DQ and our lack of platform experience cost us in the team standings. However, the team did an incredible job competing and walking away with new season and lifetime bests. We are starting to see the potential of our program and are setting up well for CCSAs."

In addition to Halmai's heroics, the Eagles were represented by seven different athletes in today's finals.

Freshman Michaela Sizemore and classmate Hannah VanDress tallied a combined 20 points in the 1650-yard freestyle, finishing within one second of each other at 16th and 17th, respectively. Sizemore's 17:19.86 was good for a season-best.

In the 200 Back finals, FGCU was also represented by a pair of Eagles, as senior Elizabeth Zeiger and freshman Julia Rodriguez collected points for the team. Zeiger earned a 15th-place finish, while Rodriguez swam a season-best 2:03.73 en route to finishing 21st.

Sophomore Wiktoria Czarnecka built on the strong performances she has posted throughout the invite, claiming fifth in the 100 Free. Earlier in the day, she notched a personal best in the prelims after swimming a 50.01. She was just 0.02 second off of that pace in the final.

The 200 Breast event saw a trio of Eagles qualify for the finals. Halmai's record-setting performance was good for second place overall, while freshman Anna Hogan and senior Elizabeth White finished 21st and 23rd, respectively.

Halmia and Rodriguez scored the final points of the invitational for the Green and Blue, as the pair combined for 39 points in the 200 Fly. Halmai earned another second-place finish after swimming a 1:59.35 in the final. Rodriguez' 2:07.69 was good for 16th.

Excluding the teams that brought just diving, the Eagles would have earned a sixth-place finish among the highly-competitive 13-team field. The Houston Cougars, who hosted the invitational, finished the weekend atop the final team standings.

Team Standings:
1. Houston – 1,737 points
2. Rice – 1,144 points

It was great to see so many new season and lifetime bests today, thanks to being able to take advantage of the finals format. Come Februrary, we will need to be better in the mornings, but with our young team we see the talent is there, we will just continue to gain these valuable experiences."

"I'm really excited about how the team performed today," head coach Dave Rollins said. "It's important for our young team to get the experience of a collegiate championship meet and they are doing great. It's always important to think about the team race, but ultimately the experience we are ggaining from swimming this weekend will serve us well come CCSAs."

The prelims for the 10-meet invite, which began at 10 a.m., saw six Eagles qualify for finals. Freshmen Reese Wakefield and Delaney Nelson each made it through on the 1m board, sophomore Wiktoria Czarnecka secured a spot in the A Final in the 50 Free and the trio of junior Petra Halmai, senior Elizabeth Zeiger and freshman Anna Hogan earned spots in the finals for the 200 IM.

Czarnecka had the highest individual finish of the day for the Green and Blue, touching the wall fourth in the 50 Free final. After swimming a personal best earlier today in the prelims, she outdid herself once again in the finals, posting a time of 22.94. That time is good for eighth all-time in the FGCU record book.

The Eagles were represented by three athletes in the 200 IM, as Halmai, Zeiger and Hogan all punched their tickets to the A, B and C finals. Halmai collected 23 points after finishing seventh in the A final, Zeiger added 13 points by finishing 14th overall and Hogan rounded out the scoring with four points after a 21st-place finish. Halmai's time of 2:01.68 is good for fifth-all time in program history, while Zeiger's 2:02.45 checks in at 10th.

On the 1m board, Wakefield and Nelson combined for 31 points. Wakefield's 249.35 points were good for a sixth-place finish, while Nelson came in 18th after earning 225.60 points.

"Congratulations to Petra, Tori (Czarnecka) and Liz (Zeiger) on earning new all-time top 10 times," Rollins said. "We have a very rich history, so those don't come easy. Reese continues to be a dominant diver and Delaney came up huge making her first final. We had a fantastic first day and I can't wait to get everyone going tomorrow."

FGCU S&D @ Marshall, Oakland Recap

The FGCU swimming & diving team (5-3, 4-0 CCSA) fell to Oakland (7-1, 2-0 Horizon) and host Eastern Michigan (3-1, 2-0 MAC) at the end of its Midwestern road trip Saturday afternoon. This was the second meet in as many days for the Eagles, who took part in the big Oakland-EMU rivalry meet. Despite the slight skid, FGCU is still ranked 40th overall and fifth among mid-majors by CollegeSwimming.com.

"We learned a lot as a team the past two days," head coach Dave Rollins said. "With a young team, we needed to experience flying, competing in back-to-back days and learn how to take care of ourselves. The team is in great spirits and ready to take on the next phase of the season."

Junior Petra Halmai, who has posted multiple nationally-ranked times this season, secured the Eagles' first points of the meet in the 100 Breast. She was edged by Oakland's Sydney McDowell by about half a second, but held off third-place Elli Machado of EMU by .19 seconds.

Sophomore Wiktoria Czarnecka followed up two events later with a third-place finish in the 50 Free. She was closely tailed by freshman Hailey Jerew, as the duo combined for a total of five points for the Eagles.

On the 3m board, freshman Reese Wakefield (Guelph, Ontario, Canada/Bishop Macdonelle CHS) continued to flex the dominance she has shown through the start of her rookie campaign by taking home first place by almost a full, 20-point margin. Classmate Delaney Nelson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) also tallied points in the event by finishing fourth.

Czarnecka (Lublin, Poland/Liceum nr 10 w Lublinie) added more points for FGCU through the middle of the meet, contributing a third-place finish in the 100 Free. She and EMU's Amelia Grant-Armstrong tied for third place while Oakland took the top two spots. Halmai (Dombovar, Hungary/Lanczos Komel Secondari Grammar School) also garnered points in the middle of the meet, touching the wall third in the 200 Breast.

Senior Cassidy Fry was the last to earn a podium finish for the Eagles, as she took home second place in the 100 Fly. Fry's (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood HS) race was tightly contested, as the top three finishes were all posted within a half second of one another.

In the final event of the meet, FGCU posted a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Czarnecka, freshman Lucija Sulenta (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija I ekonomska skola Benedikta Kotruljevica), Jerew (Miami, Fla./Cutler Bay Senior HS) and Fry pulled away from an Eastern Michigan entry and secured a two-second margin over the fifth-place opponent.

Though the team is on its way back to Fort Myers, the Eagles are still awaiting official results from Friday night's meet against Marshall and host Toledo. The scoring from the meet is under review and, therefore, results have yet to be announced.

Up Next
FGCU will continue its road swing by heading to Houston for the Cougars' Phil Hansel Invitational. The Invite will take course from Nov. 20-23 at the CRWC Natatorium and will be the final competition of 2019 for the Eagles.

FGCU S&D vs Houston Recap

"First of all, hats off to Houston," head coach Dave Rollins said. "They are a well-coached program and it's great for us to compete with them. We showed our youth this weekend, making small mistakes. We definitely have areas in which we can improve, but overall I am very encouraged with how we performed over the two days."

The quartet of freshman Lucija Sulenta, junior Petra Halmai, senior Cassidy Fry and sophomore Wiktoria Czarnecka was the first to bring home points for the Eagles in day 2 of the meet against Houston, notching a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay.

FGCU S&D vs Houston Preview

Fresh off its first dual win over an SEC opponent, the FGCU swimming & diving team (5-0, 4-0 CCSA) will remain at the FGCU Aquatics Complex to host the University of Houston (3-0, 2-0 American) in a two-day meet from Friday, Nov. 1 through Saturday, Nov. 2. The first leg of the meet is set to begin on Friday at 4 p.m. and will feature a Halloween costume contest for fans in attendance. On Saturday, the teams will re-convene at the Nest at 11:30 a.m. to wrap up the events.

The Green and Blue:
The Eagles swept this week's CCSA awards, as it was announced on Tuesday afternoon that junior Petra Halmai and freshman Reese Wakefield were named swimmer and diver of the week, respectively. Halmai picked up three individual first-place finishes during the team's meet against the Commodores, while Wakefield swept both the 1m and 3m boards for her second-straight outing.

Halmai laid down pair of times that rank among the country's best; her time in the 200 Breast (2:11.36) checks in at fifth in the nation and her 100 Breast (1:01.18) performance ranks 12th. Wakefield posted an NCAA Zone score in the 1m dive, tallying up 270.86 points.

In the meet against Vanderbilt, the Green and Blue earned first-place finishes in 10 of the 16 events en route to claiming the team's final 172-121 victory. The triumph extended the team's start to the season to a 5-0 run, marking the best the program has done since 2015-16. That year, FGCU went 7-0 before dropping its first dual meet.

This weekend's meet will be the Eagles' last at the Nest this semester. The Green and Blue will hit the road to take on competition in Ohio and Michigan before heading to Texas to compete in the Cougars' Phil Hansel Invitational.

The Cougars:
Houston will travel to Fort Myers looking to continue its unbeaten streak in dual meets. The Cougars opened their season with a victory over CCSA member Incarnate Word 204-158 (Sept. 27). Since then, Houston has picked up wins over Tulane (Oct. 3) and SMU (Oct. 23).

Senior Peyton Kondis returns to this year's team after representing the Cougars at last season's NCAA Championships. She has earned a spot in the postseason meet for the past two consecutive years. In addition to Kondis, Houston was represented by a trio of divers that competed at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Senior Lauren Burrell, sophomore Katie Deininger and sophomore Makayla Waller all competed for the team.

Similar to the FGCU, Houston has dominated its conference over the years. The Cougars have won three-straight titles in the American and have finished in the top three in four of the past six seasons. This year, Houston has already defeated conference rival SMU by a score of 190-104.

FGCU S&D vs Vanderbilt Recap

The win marked the program's first over an SEC opponent in a dual meet and the 20th win against a Power 5 school and are 20-22 overall.

"It was a great day," head coach Dave Rollins said. "Before we got started, I told the team that I wanted us to win every aspect of the meet, including team support, warming down, their turns, their breakouts and their finishes. They did a really good job of that. There are some areas that we can improve, but to see how fast some of those girls were swimming this early in the season is really exciting."

Over the course of the meet's 16 events, the Eagles picked up 10 first-place finishes. Junior Petra Halmai led the way, taking home three individual events and contributing to a Green and Blue relay win.

FGCU opened up the competition with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Freshman Lucija Sulenta, Halmai, senior Cassidy Fry and sophomore Wiktoria Czarnecka finished 0.26 seconds before a Vanderbilt quartet to garner the team's first points of the day.

Freshman Kaja Reinhardt was the next big winner for the Eagles, touching the wall first in the 200 Free. Classmate Anna Hogan also contributed points in the race as FGCU jumped out to a 29-25 lead.

Halmai earned her first individual victory of the meet in the 100-yard breaststroke. Her time of 1:01.18 currently stands as the 11th-fastest time in the country. She also laid down a nationally-ranked time in the 200 Breast; her mark of 2:11.36 checks in at fourth in the collegiate standings, behind only Power-5 opponents. That time is .15 seconds off of her personal best, which stands as the school record.

FGCU picked up crucial points in the middle of the meet as the team posted a four-event stretch of top finishes. The streak began in the 200 Fly, which featured an Eagle sweep via the efforts of Halmai, freshman Julia Rodriguez and Fry. Czarnecka and freshman Hailey Jerew continued the scoring with a one-two finish in the 50-yard freestyle, which was followed up by rookie Reese Wakefield's win in the 3M dive. Czarnecka capped off the run with another individual triumph in the 100 Free. She was followed by Reinhardt and Jerew .

Wakefield continued to pick up wins in her rookie campaign as she won the 1M board to sweep both diving events. She outscored her opponents by a combined 33.67 points and has so far won every diving event that she has competed in as an Eagle.

In the final event of the day, it was the Eagles who touched the wall first in the 400-yard freestyle relay by a thrilling, 0.04-second margin. Reinhardt, Czarnecka, Sulenta and Jerew provided the Green and Blue's last points of the meet as the quartet edged the second-place Commodores with a time of 3:27.07.

Senior Elizabeth White swam a 2:18.85 in the 200 Breast, almost half a second faster than her previous best.

Last season, Vanderbilt finished the 2018-19 season at the SEC Championships, where the team finished in 12th place (153 points). The Commodores do not have a diving team and their roster is fairly evenly split between classes.

FGCU S&D vs Power 5:
FGCU holds a 19-22 record against Power 5 Conference teams with a 13-13 record against the ACC, and are looking for their first win a SEC team as they are 0-5.

"The team had a very solid day," said head coach Dave Rollins. "After shaking off some nerves of their first meet, it was great to see the team rise to the occasion of competing on back-to-back days. In addition to the strong swims in the pool, getting to see our freshmen divers compete for the first time brings a great sense of excitement to the season. Congratulations to Reese on winning both boards in her first collegiate meet. Now, we have three weeks before we welcome Vanderbilt to the Nest and we will be ready."

The Eagles got off to a hot start, grabbing first-place finishes in the opening two events of the meet. The team of freshman Lucija Sulenta, junior Petra Halmai, senior Cassidy Fry and freshman Hailey Jerew edged out Campbell by 0.50 seconds to take the 200-yard medley relay. Freshman Hannah VanDress followed up with her second victory in the 1000-yard freestyle in as many days.

FGCU S&D vs UNF/Campbell Recap

The FGCU swimming and diving team (2-0, 2-0 CCSA) picked up a pair of wins on Friday afternoon as the team defeated host UNF (0-2, 0-2 CCSA) and Campbell (1-1, 1-1 CCSA) at the Bolles School. The Eagles downed the Ospreys 185-76 and edged out the Camels 133-128.

"It's no secret that we have a young team, but that's what makes it so exciting," said head coach Dave Rollins. "Bringing these girls together for a road trip against CCSA competition was the perfect way for us to start the year. Plus, getting to see some first-time Eagle wins is always special. We are focused on what we need to do to get better week to week, meet to meet. There are some details that we need to clean up, but that's to be expected early in the season. The most important thing is how they react in the moment and how they mentally respond when faced with a challenge."

"We swam against two good teams in our conference today," said UNF head coach Ian Coffey. "I'm very happy with the way raced. We still have some things to work on, but we have made a lot of progress. I am starting to see our hard work paying off and now we get ready for our meet in two weeks."

The quartet of freshman Lucija Sulenta, junior Petra Halmai, senior Cassidy Fry and freshman Kaja Reinhardt won the first event of the meet, dominating the 400-yard medley relay by almost a full three seconds.

The freshman class had a strong showing in its first official meet for FGCU. Freshman Hannah VanDress won the 1000-yard freestyle by seven seconds, laying down her second-fastest split time in the final 50 yards. Sulenta was 0.68 seconds off the winning time in the 100 Back and freshman Anna Hogan finished in the top three of the 100-yard breaststroke. The top three times in Hogan's race were separated by just 0.43 seconds. Reinhardt also added points, taking home first place in the 500 Free.

"Congratulations to Lucy, Kaja and Hannah on earning their first-ever wins as Eagles," said Rollins. "It's something I'm sure they will always remember. It was especially exciting to see Kaja win, as she had never swam the 500-yard freestyle and she was extremely consistent."

Halmai and senior Elizabeth White also claimed a pair of first-place finishes in the opening events of the meet. Halmai won the 200 Fly, while White came out on top of the tightly-contested 100 Breast event.

Through the first seven events, the Eagles held an 89.5-40.5 point advantage over UNF and a 66-64 point edge over Campbell.

Down the stretch, FGCU continued to pick up victories that provided vital points to the team. Fry claimed the 100 Fly and classmate Elizabeth Zeiger earned a first-place finish in the 200 IM, followed by runner-up Hogan.

The Eagles swept the 200 Breast, as Halmai picked up her second individual win of the meet, while White and Hogan rounded out the top three. In the final event of the day, the team of freshman Hailey Jerew, Reinhardt, Sulenta and Fry finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Sulenta, Reinhardt, VanDress, Hogan and Jerew all made their FGCU debuts along with Claire McAtee, Julia Rodriguez, Jackie Greeves and Michaela Sizemore.
