The second-seeded FGCU men's soccer team (9-7-2) produced a 2-1 result over third-seeded UNF (6-8-2) Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
"Just remarkable character by the guys today. It was a difficult and physical game," said head coach Jesse Cormier. "It was on us to keep our identity and be clear on who we are to continue to play the way we do and eventually we got a break in the second half with a goal. I'm very proud of them today, it was not an easy task to do."
Ivan Rosales put FGCU on the board just five minutes into the match. The senior collected a pass from Shak Adams and then fired from 25 yards out to find the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year. With the assist, Adams is now the program's record holder with 16 career helpers to his name.
North Florida would find the equalizer in the 12th minute as both squads were all knotted up going into the break. At the intermission, FGCU held a 5-1 shot advantage over UNF.
In the opening 15 minutes of the second stanza, FGCU launched four shots as the offense cranked up. The persistent attack finally paid off in the 71st minute. Ryan Medilah played a ball from midfield over to O'Vonte Mullings, who was able to squeeze past a pair of defenders for the near-post finish. Minutes later UNF tried to level with a header in the box but Kareem Riley was right on top of the line for the clearing save.
Down the stretch, both clubs played with 10 men after each side was issued a red card in the final five minutes. Connor Gavigan (6-3) capped off his day with a save in the 89th minute to secure the 2-1 victory for FGCU. Rosales registered three shots with two on frame. The Eagles' defense yielded just six shots with three coming on target.
Up Next:
The win advances the Eagles to the A-SUN Championship match for the first time since 2016 against top-seeded NJIT (9-4-4). The match will take place in Newark, N.J. next Saturday with a time to be determined. The winner of the game will claim an automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Men's Soccer National Tournament.

FGCU MSOC @ Stetson Recap
The FGCU men's soccer team (8-7-2, 4-1-1 A-SUN) defeated Stetson (7-9-2, 3-2-1 A-SUN) on the road Saturday night to secure the No. 2 seed in next week's A-SUN Tournament.
In the process, they will host a quarterfinals match next Friday and play the winner Sunday afternoon in a time to be determined.
"Tonight was a tremendous win for the program. We needed a really good performance to beat a quality opponent like Stetson," said head coach Jesse Cormier. "Our guys trained really hard and well this week, and I think it showed in our ability to compete and have sustained quality for a full ninety minutes tonight. The strong character of the team and excellent leadership shined throughout. We saw great pride in the team and program."
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead within the first 26 minutes of play as senior Ivan Rosales netted the first goal in the 20th minute. Shak Adams played the Houston native a ball atop the 18-yard box as he took a right-footed strike after a few dribbles for the score. With the assist, Adams has now tied the all-time FGCU record with 15 helpers. Six minutes later, sophomore O'Vonte Mullings made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal. The Ontario native was able to intercept a goal kick past midfield and then dribbled with pace all the way past the 18-yard box where he struck it past the keeper to the far post.
Stetson cut FGCU's lead down to one after scoring in the 35th minute. At the break, the Eagles and the Hatters were tied with eight shots apiece as FGCU fired five on frame.
In the opening stages of the second half, the Green and Blue capitalized on a foul by Stetson. In the 55th minute, Kareem Riley launched a shot just beyond the end of the midfield circle into the box. Adams was in position for the play and headed it into the back of the net to give the Eagles a 3-1 advantage.
Following Adams' goal, the Eagles defense didn't yield a Hatter shot until the 73rd minute. Adams' collected his brace in the 82nd minute to add the goal cushion for the Eagles. Inside the penalty box, Ryan Medilah's shot was deflected as Adams' was there for the rebound and tally. Stetson made it interesting with a score five minutes later but the Eagles staved off the Hatters' comeback attempt en route to the 4-2 win.
All said FGCU outshot Stetson 21-14 with 12 of those shots coming on frame. Medilah led the squad with five shots as Rosales fired a team-high three on frame. Connor Gavigan secured five saves as the Colorado native moves to 5-3-0 this season.

Prior to the game's kickoff, the Eagles honored its senior class members in TC Anderson, Thomas Delplace, Ivan Rosales, Jahan Rajaee, Joao Burti, Miguel Perez, Ryan Medilah, Ernest Mitchell, Jomar Alvarez, Shak Adams and Tom Denat.
"We're disappointed. It was a big night and we had a great crowd," said head coach Jesse Cormier. "I just thought that we didn't show up. We probably got what we deserved tonight. We have a week to get ready for Stetson so we'll start focusing on that matchup soon and put this result behind us."
Right out of the box, the visitors got on the board first scoring one minute and four seconds into the game. FGCU though, responded right back four minutes later as Rajaee netted his third goal of the season. Dribbling along the right-edge of the 18-yard box, Perez flicked over a cross that found the head of Rajaee for the equalizer. Perez now leads the team with four assists.
Heading towards the break, NJIT's Andrew Nino and Max Edwards were both booked with their second yellow card as each squad played with 10 men the rest of the contest.
In the second stanza, FGCU fired off eight shots, four of them coming on goal all by midfielder Medilah. It was in the 84th minute of play that saw NJIT secure the game-winner – Gerald Cubero, his second of the night. The Eagles outshot the Highlanders 18-11 and also held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks. Medilah led the Eagles in shots with five. Connor Gavigan (4-3) secured three saves in the losing effort.

It's the first win over a ranked opponent at home since the Eagles defeated #24 Omaha 3-2 in 2017. Meanwhile, it's the highest-ranked opponent to go down at the Nest since 2010 when FGCU downed #5 Ohio State 1-0.
"Last year we played the same team and they outshot us 26-1. They had 11 on goal and we had none," said head coach Jesse Cormier. "We wanted to make a much better account of who we are and how we play. They're a very good team, one of the best in the country and we needed to have a very special effort from multiple guys. It was a team effort and I'm excited to have that kind of form heading into the last few games. The end of October and November is when you really need to start coming in form so tonight's performance was encouraging."

Scouting the 49ers:
Charlotte is coming off of 0-0 double overtime match against #12 FIU. Teddy Chaouche leads the squad in points (19), goals (six) and assists (seven). Including him, 10 49ers have scored with seven tallying at least two goals. Elliot Panicco has started all 13 matches, boasting a 0.57 GAA, pairing that with six clean sheets.
Currently ranked 10th in the country, Charlotte reached as high as No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches' poll this season. In the latest RPI standings, they come in at No. 18.
Both clubs met for the first time last season in North Carolina as FGCU dropped a 1-0 decision to open the 2018 campaign.

The Green and Blue:
FGCU is coming off a 2-0 road win over Liberty that saw sophomore forward O'Vonte Mullings net both goals as he earned back-to-back A-SUN Player of the Week honors. He leads the team in points (16) and goals (seven), both of which rank him second in the A-SUN. Three different Eagles have registered at least three assists this season.
In net the past five games, Connor Gavigan has gone 3-2-0, registering his first clean sheet of the year versus the Flames.
Tuesday night's match will be the 15th of the season for FGCU and also the 10th opponent on the Eagles' schedule that have either been ranked or receiving votes in national polls. Entering this week, the Eagles have an RPI of 80 which leads all A-SUN programs – their RPI was a high as 20 after the first month of play.
Scouting the 49ers:
Charlotte is coming off of 0-0 double overtime match against #12 FIU. Teddy Chaouche leads the squad in points (19), goals (six) and assists (seven). Including him, 10 49ers have scored with seven tallying at least two goals. Elliot Panicco has started all 13 matches, boasting a 0.57 GAA, pairing that with six clean sheets.
Currently ranked 10th in the country, Charlotte reached as high as No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches' poll this season. In the latest RPI standings, they come in at No. 18.
Both clubs met for the first time last season in North Carolina as FGCU dropped a 1-0 decision to open the 2018 campaign.

The FGCU men's soccer team (6-6-2, 3-0-1 ASUN) picked up a 2-0 road victory over Liberty (4-10-0, 0-4-0 ASUN) Saturday afternoon at Osborne Stadium as O'Vonte Mullings netted both goals for the Eagles. The result clinches FGCU a spot in the ASUN Tournament.
Also, FGCU and Stetson (7-5-2, 3-0-1) are now tied for first in the ASUN with 10 points apiece. The Hatters play tomorrow against UNF (3-5-2, 2-1-1).
"It was a good result on the road today," said head coach Jesse Cormier. "I was very proud of our composure to play our game, dominate in possession and have everyone committed to defending when necessary. Our backline of Delplace, Mitchell, Anderson, Le Menec and Riley were able to make educated decisions as we built out of the back end and closed their attack with good effect. It was a complete performance today."
Right out of the gates, Mullings tacked on his sixth goal of the season in the opening two minutes and five seconds of play. Shak Adams along with Jahan Rajaee each were credited with an assist. With the assist, Adams now moves into a tie for second place all-time in the FGCU record book with 14 assists.
Liberty tried to find the equalizer in the 15th minute but a save from Connor Gavigan denied the home side's chance. Just as it looked the Green and Blue were going to head into the intermission with a 1-0 advantage, Mullings collected his brace scoring in the 43rd minute. Noah Bushey was there for the assist, his third of the year which ties for a team-best now with Adams.
In the second period, the FGCU defense anchored down and suffocated the Flames' attack up front, giving up just one shot the entire period. Meanwhile the Eagles fired off five shots (one on target) as the squad secured its second shutout of the season en route to the 2-0 win. Mullings and Ivan Rosales each registered three shots apiece.
"Shak and Rosales made a difference creating wide and Mullings was sharp in front of the goal," added Cormier. "Medilah was excellent in managing and controlling the tempo for us."
Gavigan snagged one save as the Colorado native moves to 3-2-0 this season.

The FGCU men's soccer team (5-6-2, 2-0-1 A-SUN) took down Jacksonville (4-4-2, 0-3-1 A-SUN) by a score of 4-2, led by sophomore O'Vonte Mullings' brace, Saturday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Eagles are now tied for second with UNF (3-5-2, 2-1-1 A-SUN) in the conference standings with seven points. Stetson (7-5-1, 3-0-1) sits atop the league with 10 points
"Tonight was a good response from our last game Tuesday night against FIU," said head coach Jesse Cormier. "We started off a little slowly but I thought we came into it, we had some good looks and buried our chances. There's still work and room to improve but you always want to get three points, at home, in conference, so tonight was a big result for us."
FGCU snagged a 3-0 lead in the first 45 minutes of play, highlighted by Mullings scoring twice. Collectively on offense, the Eagles launched 12 shots with nine coming on frame. The scoring began in the 19th minute as Mullings intercepted a JU pass atop the 18-yard box beating the keeper for the 1-0 lead. The Ontario native then made it 2-0 in the 37th minute (sixth goal of the season) using the right-edge of the six-yard box, his cross was deflected by a JU defender, finding the back of the net.
Just before the intermission, freshman Aiden Jokomba gave FGCU the 3-0 lead in the 40th minute. Senior Miguel Perez pounced on his defender stealing the ball and made a pass to his left finding a sprinting Jokomba who tucked it away to the near-post from inside the penalty box (third goal of the year). It was Perez's third helper this season.
Coming out of the break, FGCU kept pressing, firing off seven shots in the opening 25 minutes of action. JU made it a 3-1 deficit in the 68th minute thanks to Gabriel Simoneau. Just over 10 minutes later, senior Joao Burti gave the Eagles the much-needed 4-1 cushion with his second tally of the season. Junior Max Edwards dribbled with space along the left-side of the pitch as he passed to his right finding Burti who then volleyed one over the keeper's shoulder for the score. It was Edward's first assist of the season.
The Dolphins made the contest interesting scoring in the 84th minute as the FGCU backline would hold its ground, yielding one shot from that point.
FGCU launched a season-high 23 shots (11 on target) Saturday night with senior Shak Adams registering a game-high five shots.

FGCU MSOC vs Lipscomb Recap
The FGCU men's soccer team (4-5-2, 1-0-1 A-SUN) came away with a nail-biting 3-2 victory over conference preseason favorite Lipscomb (2-5-1, 1-1-0 A-SUN) Saturday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
The win moves FGCU into third place with four points in the A-SUN as Stetson (6-5-1, 2-0-1) and UNF (3-3-2, 2-0-1) are both tied for first with seven points.
"We had a phenomenal first half, going into the break with a 2-0 lead, but in the second half, we didn't manage it so well," said head coach Jesse Cormier. "We lost some of our composure in the second half and let them get back into it. Overall, I'm happy to come away with the three points against the defending conference champions. We'll put this game behind us, analyze it and be better for the next game when we come back."
“I was proud how we battled back and made it a game in the second half,” Lipscomb men’s soccer head coach Charles Morrow said. “But I really challenged the guys at the end of the game about the way they approached the game and their first half performance.”
For starting goalkeepers, Cormier sent redshirt junior Connor Gavigan to the box while Morrow sent redshirt freshman Alex Brown to counter.
Sophomore O'Vonte Mullings caused problems early on for the Lipscomb back line as the sophomore nearly gave FGCU the lead but his shot in the box just skipped over the cross bar in the 17th minute. His constant pressure finally paid dividends in the 23rd minute as Mullings one-timed a pass from senior Ryan Medilah inside the box from the right-side for the 1-0 lead. This was Mullings' second goal of the season and Medilah's second assist of the season.
Before heading into the half, freshman Aiden Jokomba made it 2-0 courtesy of another pass inside the 18-yard box, this time from redshirt junior Noah Bushey from the left-side. This was Jokomba's second goal of the season and Bushey's first assist of the season.
Despite being down 2-0, Lipscomb cut the deficit down to one with a goal in the 58th minute. The FGCU defense continued to hold its ground and finally go the much needed cushion in the 81st minute as Mullings collected his second goal of the night and third goal of the season. The play started beyond midfield first with junior Chris Clement who then passed it to Bushey past the midfield stripe. From there, he threaded a pass to Mullings who took the one on one matchup and delivered the right-footed shot to the back of the net. It was Clement's first assist of the season and Bushey's second assist of the game and season.
Lipscomb turned the match into a nail-biter scoring in the 89th minute and nearly delivered the equalizer with seconds left on the scoreboard but Gavigan made a diving save to his near post to preserve the 3-2 win for the Eagles.
All said the Eagles outshot the Bisons 17-15 with five of those shots coming on frame. Gavigan, who was making his first start of the year, came up with three saves, all in the second stanza. Mullings led the squad with a game-high five shots.
Gavigan (1-1) would earn his first win after getting three saves.

The FGCU men's soccer team will travel across Alligator Alley Wednesday night for a showdown against FAU before starting A-SUN play at UNF Saturday night.

Ivan Rosales has netted a pair of goals while Shak Adams (Antioch, Tenn./Cane Ridge HS) tallied his first goal of the season versus UCF to move him into sole possession for second place all-time on the FGCU record book.
In net, keeper Gustavo Vasconcelos (3-3-1) has started all seven contests, securing 31 saves (1.80 GAA), and one clean sheet.
Scouting the Owls:
FAU is 2-3-0 this season, most recently falling to No. 21 Kentucky on the road, 3-0. Ivan Mykhailenko leads the Owl's attack with two goals and one assist for five points. Andres Macias has dished out a team-best two assists. Daniel Ragoo and Haygay Jalon have split time in net as each have recorded a win.

Jake Hawker has bagged two goals so far to lead the offense while three other Ospreys have recorded one assist. In net, Padraic Gilley has logged just over 360 minutes in four starts collecting four saves.

The No. 14 FGCU men's soccer team (3-1-1) suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of UC Riverside (4-1-0), who is receiving votes, by a score of 2-0 Friday night at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
"This game is a very good example for everyone involved," said head coach Jesse Cormier. "We are no better than anyone else when we're not ready to compete, when we play as individuals, and don't work well collectively."
Keeper Gustavo Vasconcelos was on his toes early on coming up with two saves inside 17 minutes to keep the home side off the board. On offense for the Eagles, Shak Adams fired off four of the six first half shots for FGCU, with one hitting off the right post in the 27th minute. Just before the intermission, Miguel Perez tested the UCR keeper but was denied with save down the middle in the 41st minute.
In the second stanza, the Highlanders scored two goals in two minutes. The first goal arrived in the 54th while the second tally was driven home in the 56th minute. Olli Pirinen recorded an assist on both goals for UCR.
FGCU registered six shots in the second half with two coming on target by Ivan Rosales, one in the 87th and the final one with just under 30 seconds left. Adams and Rosales each registered four shots apiece. The Eagles capped off the night launching 12 shots, three on frame and edged UCR in corners, 7-5. "UCR deserved to win, they wanted it more and took care of key details and plays to be the more effective team tonight. Our biggest challenge is to see how much we can learn from our failures and do a better job against Cal State Fullerton Sunday."

In the "Battle of the Eagles", the No. 18 FGCU men's soccer team (3-0-1) scored three second half goals to roll past RV Georgia Southern (2-1-0) 5-1, Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
"I'm really proud of the all-around performance from our guys today," said head coach Jesse Cormier. "We got caught early on but I'm glad how we were able to respond and take the 2-1 lead before the half. Coming out of the break we knew we had to keep the energy going and we did that. Up and down the roster everyone contributed today and that's what you like to see, so I was very pleased."
"We weren't at the races today, so it was a pretty disappointing result," Georgia Southern Head Men's Soccer Coach John Murphy said. "The little details at this level are important, so it's back to the drawing board this week. We will use our time as best we can to prepare for our game this Friday at North Florida."
For starting goalkeepers, Cormier sent redshirt junior Gustavo Vasconcelos while Georgia Southern head coach John Murphy sent sophomore Jokull Blaengsson to counter.
It was a shaky start for the Green and Blue as Georgia Southern was the first to strike with a goal by junior Alhaji Tambadu in the sixth minute. Unfazed, FGCU responded eight minutes later using the right side of the pitch. Senior Shak Adams found junior Kareem Riley who dished it to sophomore O'Vonte Mullings inside the 18-yard box for the one-timer shot. It was Mullings first of the season. Redshirt junior Thomas Deplace nearly put FGCU up in the 32nd with a header off a corner kick but a one-handed save denied the senior.
The game looked to be tied minutes before the intermission but freshman Aiden Jokomba changed that. Appearing in his first collegiate match after graduating from Cornwall College, Jokomba found a ball from freshman Stephen Linton inside the six-yard box and put it away (42nd minute) to the far post, no more than one minute after being subbed in. FGCU headed to the locker room up 2-1, registering 11 shots with eight coming on frame.
In the second stanza, the Eagles recorded their first shot on target in the 67th minute via Adams as Deplace capitalized in the 70th. Once again off a corner, the captain headed one to the right-upper 90 for the 3-1 lead. Senior Miguel Perez was credited with the assist. The two final goals for the Green and Blue would arrive in the final 12 minutes.
Just inside the right edge of the 18-yard box, senior Joao Burti crossed a pass to his left and found senior Jahan Rajaee for the tap-pin in the 78th minute. Six minutes later, junior Michael Luke netted the final goal for FGCU. The junior midfielder sprinted along the left-side of the pitch all the way to the penalty area where he struck a right-footed shot right past the keeper's left hand.
Along with Jokomba, Deplace, Rajaee and Luke all netted their first career collegiate goals. On offense, 12 different Eagles recorded a shot as the team finished with 21, 15 coming on frame.
Vasconcelos capped off the match securing five saves as he moves to 3-0-1 between the posts while Blaengsson (2-1) posted 10 saves.

We were becoming more dangerous, guys were giving more effort with confidence and we created more opportunities. In the end, Max played an incredible game in the back for us defensively and got forward and scored the game-winner. If there was one guy that was really the man of the match and someone who epitomized how we wanted to play, it was him. He was fully deserving to be the hero tonight."

Against the Wolverines, senior midfielder Ryan Medilah (Paris, France/San Jacinto) netted the program's sixth overall hat trick and had one assist. His performance led him to be named National Player of the Week by both United Soccer Coaches/NCAA and College Soccer News.

Against the Wolverines, senior midfielder Ryan Medilah (Paris, France/San Jacinto) netted the program's sixth overall hat trick and had one assist. His performance led him to be named National Player of the Week by both United Soccer Coaches/NCAA and College Soccer News.
Medilah leads the Eagles with seven points while Ivan Rosales (Houston, Texas/San Jacinto) has netted a pair of goals (four points). Tuesday afternoon, FGCU went from receiving no votes in the preseason to being dubbed the No. 18 team in the country in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
Scouting the Pirates:
Stephen Elias leads Seton Hall with three goals in 66 minutes as the Pirates are coming off a 6-0 win over Central Connecticut State last Friday. JP Martin dished out two helpers in that match. In net, Andreas Nota played all 90 minutes, coming away with three saves while facing eight shots.
This will be the first meeting between both clubs.
Scouting the Eagles:
Georgia Southern is coming off two road wins over UNC Wilmington (4-2) and the College of Charleston (2-0). Alhaji Tambadu leads the bunch with three goals while Adam Davie has netted a pair. Meanwhile, Aldair Cortes has recorded two assists. Between the posts, Jokul Blaengsson has started both matches playing the full 90 minutes each outing, securing eight saves.
This will be the second meeting between both programs as FGCU defeated Georgia Southern on the road last year 2-0. Joao Burti scored in that match with a goal in the 58th minute to secure the win.

The FGCU men's soccer team (1-0-1) were pushed to the limits as they drew a tie with Michigan State (0-0-2) by a score of 1-1 in their first ever matchup.
"I thought the guys' performance today was in many ways better than our game Friday against Michigan," said head coach Jesse Cormier. "We moved the ball well and gave them a lot to deal with and think about. It's unfortunate that we didn't get the win today but we certainly did enough to get all three points. I Give credit to Michigan State for never giving up when we had the advantage."
"I was really proud of our team's effort," said Michigan State head coach Damon Rensing. "I thought we did some very good things, created some chances. Florida Gulf Coast is a good team. They had some dangerous players and especially in the second half I thought we managed them, but I was really proud of the character of our guys. I mean to give the penalty with 2:40 left they could have kind of just wilted and went away, but they didn't. They showed character and heart and came right back and tied the game. I thought in the first overtime we really went for it. A lot of tired legs out there, but we're not a finished product but I do feel good where we are at and I like this groups character."
For starting goalkeepers, Cormier sent redshirt junior Gustavo Vasconcelos which Rensing sent redshirt sophomore Hunter Morse to counter.
It was a defensive battle for both squads early on as FGCU didn't record its first shot until the 17th minute mark, a right-footed liner from senior Jahan Rajaee that needed a diving save. Seven minutes later, classmate Ryan Medilah tested Morse but was denied as the last shot on frame in the first half was taken by sophomore Ethan Dudley in the 37th minute.
The first half saw the FGCU offense record six shots with one corner. Vasconcelos (1-0-1) saw four shots go by him, none of threat as the Eagles defense kept the Spartans in check yielding no shots on frame.

The senior launched a shot from 15 yards that went left of the near post. His next attempt would miss wide of the mark in the 68th, but the Houston native capitalized with two minutes left in regulation. Senior Shak Adams was fouled just inside the 15-yard box to draw the penalty kick as Rosales was called upon to take and it buried it in the top-left corner. It was Rosales' second goal of the season.
FGCU looked to be walking away with a win in its pocket but the Spartans drew a foul in the box after Vasconcelos leaped in the air, coming down on a player. Redshirt sophomore Alex Shterenberg converted the penalty kick with 57 seconds left to bring the match into overtime.
In extra time, FGCU mustered two shots, edging MSU in corners, 2-1 (7-3 overall). All said the offense put up 16 total shots with six coming on frame. The defense limited the seventh-ranked Spartans to four shots on goal in the 110 minutes.
Vasconcelos had three saves in his name while Morse (0-0-2) had five saves.
Freshman Tremain Simpson made his debut for FGCU. Simpson joined after graduating from Kingston College in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
