SCF Softball Sweep Western University

Bradenton, Fla - The SCF softball team (10-8) bumped their record up to double digit wins as they swept Western University by scores of 6-2 and 11-0 (5) at the SCF Softball Complex.

"I think we started out a little dead in game one and we missed some opportunities," said head coach Mandy Schuerman. "Obviously, we played good enough to win, but there was things we could definitely improve on like we did in game two."

"I think we did really good today and that we won twice against a team that went 25-2 last season," said sophomore Presley O'Kimosh.

"I thought we did good today," said freshman Haley Rosenbaum. "We didn't come in scared and let the fact that they (Western University) came all the way from Canada to scare us and we still played our best."

"As a pitcher, it is the best when my defense works behind me," said freshman Brielle Bostow. "Being able to throw a shutout was because of my defense and I can only feel super comfortable throwing my pitches when I know I have a good defense behind me, so I thought it was a very good team win overall and we all made plenty of adjustments to do so."

Game One:
Schuerman sent sophomore Sam Carlin to the mound for the first game, while Western University head coach Pete Lemon went with senior Aimee Leduc.

In the bottom of the first, the Manatees would open the doors in the bottom of the first as freshman Alissa Kessler would send sophomore Tori Copeland with an RBI single left for the first run of the game. One inning later, O'Kimosh would send a single to left to bring in Rosenbaum to make it 2-0 SCF.

The Mustangs would get their first run on the board at the top of the fourth after a sacrifice fly by junior Lauren Greco. The Manatees would respond back in the bottom half of the inning. After sophomore Chantel Schurr drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, Rosenbaum would send a single to center to bring in Schurr before stealing second. After O'Kimosh hit a single, she would help set up a double steal attempt as she stole second while Rosenbaum scored by stealing home to make it 4-1 SCF.

After a scoreless fifth, the Mustangs would get their run of the game at the top of the sixth after a fielder's choice by Greco. The Manatees would once again respond in the bottom half of the inning. After a one out single by Rosenbaum, before she stole second, and O'Kimosh drew a walk before they performed another successful double steal attempt, freshman Maddisan Noriega would send a single to right to bring in Rosenbaum and O'Kimosh to make it 6-2 SCF.

At the top of the seventh, the Mustangs would get two runners on, but strong defense form Carlin turning a double play gave the Manatees the win in the first game.

Carlin would get the win after throwing a complete game, giving up two runs on eight hits with three walks and one strikeout. She is now 3-0 on the season.

"I felt good at the plate," said O'Kimosh on her game. "I made some key adjustments based on the last game I played. I took what coach Tony (Cummings) told me into consideration about my hands being close to my body and I felt confident hitting the ball and I did."

"I felt comfortable at the plate and have been hitting good so far," said Rosenbaum on her stolen bases. "I just needed to come in with that same mentality from the last two games and I just built off their errors."

Noriega would be the only Manatee with a multi-RBI as she finished 1-for-1 with two RBI, while Kessler (1-for-2, one RBI) and Copeland (1-for-3, one run and one stolen base) had the remaining two hits. Schurr (one run, one walk and a stolen base) would also contribute in the game.

The Manatees would once again open early on the scoreboard beginning with sophomore Olivia Seibert reaching first on a fielding error before Copeland hit a bunt single and Kessler drew a walk to load the bases for Schurr. On a wild pitch, Copeland would score for the first run before Schurr grounded out to bring in Kessler to make it 3-0 SCF. After redshirt freshman Jordan O'Brien was hit by a pitch and Nicholson would draw a walk to load the bases, Dixon would be out at home while Noriega reached on a fielder's choice. Halback would once again show her hitting ability as she sent a single to center to bring in O'Brien and Nicholson to make it 11-0 SCF.

Bostow would end up losing her chance at a no-hitter as she gave up a leadoff single, but the Tarpon Springs native would seal the shutout and get the win for the Manatees with the defense on her side. She would bump up to 3-3 after throwing a three-hit five inning shutout with one walk and one strikeout.

"The best way I felt on the mound was calm, cool and collected," said Bostow on her shutout. "After walking the first batter, the nerves sometimes get to me, but once I settled in, I felt good with Gabi (Nicholson) behind the plate."

Isert Bender would get the loss after giving up seven runs (four earned) on five hits with two walks in two innings. Sophomore Ainsleigh Wedow gave up four runs on three hits with two walks in two innings of relief.

Sophomore Abby Bush and freshmen Madison Mahon and Olivia Smith had all three of the Mustangs hits.

"It was amazing," said Schuerman on the historic. "While I don't really pay attention to all that, we just see another team on the other side."

'It felt good," said Bostow. "It was cool that we were the first team out of all of our teams from our program to play someone from another country."

"I thought it was great," said O'Kimosh. "I thought it was an amazing opportunity for us, even when I wasn't thinking about it constantly and just taking it one pitch at a time."

SCF Sweeps South Florida State

Avon Park, Fla - The SCF softball team (7-7) got back to winning as they swept South Florida State (6-10) 10-8 and 13-0 (5). With the sweep, the Manatees split the series with the Panthers for this season.

"I was very excited that we showed fight and really started using the whole field offensively," said head coach Mandy Schuerman. "We started off shaky on our defense in the first game, but then we jumped early on the game and shutdown their offense. We are going to have to play more consistently and focus on winning one pitch at a time upon our next series against Santa Fe."

"I thought we did a great job of being locked in for both games," said sophomore Tori Copeland. "We had each others backs on offense and defense and had lots of productive at-bats and plays. I'm so proud of us for coming through with these two wins, especially and I'm especially proud of Brielle (Bostow) with her shutout."

"We didn't give up on any inning," said sophomore Gabi Nicholson. "While we might have had a couple of times where we didn't score, we were engaged the whole game and always picked each other up on defense and offense. It definitely felt good getting the sweep today and showing them that the team they played today didn't come to play."

Game One:
Schuerman sent freshman Karsyn Rutherford to the mound, while South Florida State head coach Carlos Falla went with sophomore Emylee Mountin.

The Manatees would open up on the scoreboard first as freshman Haley Rosenbaum would hit a single, steal second and advance to third on a groundout before scoring after classmate Alissa Kessler reached on a fielding error. The Panthers would then take the lead 3-1 in the bottom half of the inning after a two-RBI double by Ashton Lewis before she scored on a Manatee fielding error.

The Manatees would then cut the deficit to 3-2 at the top of the Oaks brought in redshirt freshman Jordan O'Brien with a fielder's choice before the Panthers brought the lead back up by two after Brielle Rosa scored on a fielding error.

At the top of the third, the Manatees would tie the game at 4-4 after Kessler and Copeland scored on a fielding error while sophomore Chantel Schurr reached second. One inning later, the Manatees would retake the lead as Copeland would send a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Oaks to make it 5-4.

In the bottom half of the fourth, the Panthers would retie the game at 5-5 after an RBI groundout by Lewis.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers would regain the lead after an RBI single by Samalys Guzman to make it 6-5. One inning later, the Panthers would push the lead to 8-5 lead after a bases-loaded walk by Kaylee Underwood and an RBI single by Madison Hodge. This signaled the end for Rutherford as Schuerman would send sophomore Sam Carlin to the mound to get out of the inning.

At the top of the seventh, the Manatees put together a rally to boost their confidence to get out of the slump. After Copeland and Kessler hit back-to-back singles to start, Schurr Gabi Nicholson and Olivia Siebert would hit three straight RBI singles to tie the game at 8-8. After  bunt by sophomore Presley O'Kimosh, Carlin would be the hero as the product of Riverview would send a single to center to bring in Nicholson and Siebert to make it 10-8 SCF. From there, Carlin, despite giving up a single, would get out of the bottom of the seventh as the Manatees got the win.

"Sam C (Carlin) has come through for us in a big way," said Schuerman on Carlin. "We are happy on her role that she is playing"

Moutin would fall to 2-3 after throwing a complete game, giving up 10 runs (five earned) on 13 hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Alongside Rutherford Rosenbaum (2-for-5, one run and two stolen bases), Copeland (2-for-4, two runs and one RBI) and Kessler (2-for-4, two runs) each had two hits.

Schurr was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run, while Siebert was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

O'Kimosh (1-for-3), Oaks (one run, one walk, one RBI and one stolen base) and O'Brien (one run and one stolen base) also contributed in the game for the Manatees.

For the Panthers, Rosa and sophomore Samantha Beardin lead the way in hitting as they both had three hits each. Lewis lead the way in RBI as she was 1-for-3 with three RBI.

Game Two:
For game two, Schuerman sent freshman Brielle Bostow to the mound, while Falla went with freshman Sydney Toukonen.

The Manatees would once again get on the board first at the top of the first as Oaks, who hit a single, stole second and moved up to third after Schurr was hit by a pitch, scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 SCF. At the top of the second, the Manatees would extend their lead further beginning with O'Kimosh drawing a one-out and a two-out single by Oaks before Siebert reached second on a fielding error while O'Kimosh scored to make it 2-0 SCF. This would set up an huge opportunity for Copeland as the former Warner University Royal would send a three-run homer to center for her first of the season. One inning later, Nicholson would send a solo homer to center for her first of the season. This signaled the end for Toukonen as Falla would send freshman Makayla Oster to the mound.

After the pitching change, Rosenbaum would get hit by a pitch before moving to second on a passed ball and stole third. After freshman Maddisan Noriega drew a walk, both would commit a double steal as Rosenbaum stole home to bring in a run while Noriega stole second before moving to third on a error by the catcher. Sophomore Renee Dixon, who came in to pinch hit for Oaks, would hit an RBI single to center to bring in Noriega for an 8-0 SCF lead and invoke the mercy rule.

In the bottom of the third, Bostow would get herself in a bit of a jam after putting two runners in scoring position, but with the defense on her side, she was able to get out of the jam and get out of the third. One inning later, the Manatees continued to shake up the offense as freshman Taylor Halback would send a double to center to bring in Copeland to make it 9-0 SCF.

At the top of the fifth, the Manatees would push the lead to double digits. After a leadoff pinch hit single by sophomore Molly Starinsky and Oaks reaching on a Panther fielding error, Siebert would reach base on a fielder's choice before Copeland send an infield single to bring in Starinsky to make it 10-0 SCF. After Schurr loaded the bases after reaching on fielding error, Nicholson would showcase her power as the Tennessee native would clear the bases with a double to center to make it 13-0 SCF. From there, Bostow would seal the deal with the defense backing her up to give the Manatees a clean sweep.

Bostow would move to 2-2 after throwing a three-hit five inning shutout with one walk and three strikeouts.

Toukonen would fall to 0-2 after giving up six runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in two and a third. Oster gave up seven runs (two earned) on six hits with two walks in two and thirds innings of relief.

Three Manatees hat a multi-hit game. Copeland would be the leader in game two as she finished 3-for-3 with a home run,  four RBI, three runs, a walk and a stolen base. In fact, she was a triple shy of a cycle. She would finish 5-for-7 with five RBI.

"I felt confident at the plate in both games," said Copeland on her game. "I wanted all my at-bats to be productive for both games, no matter what the end result was for me personally. I liked the lineup order for game two a lot."

"Tori was on fire," said Schuerman on Copeland. "I was very impressed by her effort and performance today."

Nicholson would follow finishing 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. She finished 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBI.

"I definitely felt really good getting these two wins to get out of this slump we were in," said Nicholson on her game. "Knowing that even if we didn't score a run or get a hit, my team still had my back and we still managed to get the dubs. At the plate, I just had to tell myself 'you know you can hit it, so just hit it'"

Oaks rounded out the order as she finished 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base.

Dixon (1-for-1, one RBI), Halback (1-for-2, one RBI) and Starinsky (1-for-1, one run) had the remaining three hits, while Siebert (two runs), Schurr (one run), Rosenbaum (one run and one stolen base), O'Brien (one walk) and O'Kimosh (one run and one walk) also contributed in the game.

5th Herd Sweeps HCC

Bradenton, Fla - The SCF basketball team (15-10, 5-4 Southern) secured their first and only conference sweep of the season as they defeated Hillsborough (15-11, 2-8 Southern) 90-85 at Hal Chasey Gymnasium. With the win, the Manatees are now 19-19 overall against the Hawks.

"It's a big round for conference play and it's hard to beat a team three times in conference," said head coach Tom Parks. "Hillsborough has continually improved over the years since I have been here and they have a lot of fight, which showed tonight after they didn't give up against us. They lead a lot of the game through coach Coleman's style, so hats off to them for the fight."

"I thought our guys did a really good job for the most part making plays down the stretch, getting rebounds, dunks and layups while pushing the ball down the floor."

"While we started off rough in the beginning and did not play as a team, we had to turn it around in the second half," said sophomore Ametri Moss "We rebounded better than them (HCC) and played together with intensity to get the win and that was our mindset. It felt amazing getting the sweep over them, being that this is my last season with the team."

"Overall, we played really well," said freshman Elijah Terry.  "We were sluggish in the first half where we were making difficult shots that were hurting us, so when the second half came in, we stepped it up and didn't take our foot off the gas and got the win. It felt good getting the sweep over Hillsborough and we look to keep that same intensity when we play FSW."

The first saw the Manatees score their first 10 points off of the hands of sophomore Skylar Wicks, but the Hawks lead from shooting by sophomore Jasper Floyd. While the Manatees tried to counter with Moss scoring, the first half would go in favor of Hillsborough by a score of 44-38.

At the start of the second half, the Manatees started to build up their offense with a little bit of a secret weapon. As the Manatees took advantage of miscommunication from the Hawks and take their first lead thanks to back-to-back 3-point shots by sophomore Isaiah Josue before Terry lead the offense with several monster dunks. In the end, the Manatees took over the second half and took the win at home.

Four Manatees scored in double figures in the game. It was Terry that lead the way as he secured his second collegiate double-double of a career-high 22 points (9-for-13 FG, 4-for-4 FT), 10 rebounds, three assists and one block off the bench.

"Slim has the ability to be a mismatch problem for the other team," said Parks on Terry. "While we don't use him often as a five, he can play really well there. The thing about him is we don't call a play for him because no one ran a play for him, but he had ways to help the team whether he's scoring, rebounding or getting his hands ready. That's his nature."

Moss would follow with 14 points (6-for-14 FG, 1-for-1 3PT, 1-for-1 FT), eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal.

"I just had to step up in the second half," said Moss on his game. "I wasn't able to find my rhythm on the offensive side in the first half, so I had to step up and get involved with my team to get the win."

Wicks and Josue would round out the order with 12 points each. Wicks (4-for-7 FG, 2-for-5 3PT, 2-for-2 FT) added four rebounds, three assists and a steal, while Josue (4-for-7 FG, 4-for-5 3PT) had four rebounds, two assists and three steals off the bench.

Freshman Kasheem Grady added nine points (4-for-9 FG), three rebounds and three assists, while classmate Josh Ijeh and sophomore Cobey Harraway had six points each. Ijeh (3-for-5 FG) added four rebounds and one assist, while Harraway (3-for-9 FG) added three rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore Ronnail Tape (three points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal), redshirt freshman Zach Smith (two points and two assists) and freshmen Malyk Rebetez (two points, two rebounds, three assists and one steal) and Dresean Knight (two points, one rebound, one assist, one steal and one block) also contributed in the game.

For the Hawks, Floyd lead the way with 35 points (12-for-21 FG, 4-for-6 3PT, 7-for-8 FT), six rebounds, two assists and four steals, while sophomores Georden Rogers and Dominic Gooden each had  15 points. Rogers added five rebounds, one assist and two steals, while three rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

SCF Takes Down Warner JV

Bradenton, Fla - Sophomore Kevin Karstetter's walk-off hit paved the way for the RV SCF baseball team (8-3) as they continued to take care of their home field at Robert C. Wynn Field after defeating Warner University JV 12-2 in eight innings via mercy rule.

"It was a real hard fought game for the guys," said head coach Tim Hill II. "They played really well on our home field, as they should, and took care of business."

"It was a good game, despite the delay," said Karstetter. "We reeled it back in and the guys came back ready to go with a lot of energy and that's all you could control."

"We came in ready to go, even with an iffy start, but wrapped it up nicely and came to play for the win," said freshman Jeremy Weaver.

"I think we had a good win today overall," said sophomore Nick Romagnola.  "We went up there with good approaches, which is the goal every game, and saw some good pitches while taking advantage of Warner's mistakes and came out on top."

"We came out and played as a team, which is all we could ask for," said sophomore Mario Lopez Jr.. "We got a lot of great guys here and they have provided a lot to the table, especially for the returners."

The game was originally scheduled to start at 6 pm, however, due to partial issues with travel, the game started at 7 pm insteam

Hill sent Weaver to the mound while Warner head coach David Moskovits sent junior Bryson Mistretta to counter.

The Royals would get on the board at the top of the first after freshman Kody Flynt drew a walk and scored on a passed ball, but Weaver would get out of the first with two strikeouts. In the next inning, freshman Jose Ramirez would send a home run to left to make it 2-0 Warner.

In the bottom of the second, the Manatees started to wake up and take the lead. After a two-out walk by freshman Jayce Blalock and a single by sophomore Liam Moreno, freshman Erick Almonte would reach on fielding error by the second baseman while Blalock scored. Moreno would then scored on another fielding error while sophomore Brayden Woodburn reached on a fielding error before Karstetter drew a walk to load the bases for classmate Austin Dearing. On a 1-0 count, Dearing would reach on a third fielding error while Almonte and Woodburn scored to make it 4-2 SCF.

The Manatees would add to their lead as sophomore Preston Wetherell would score on a wild pitch after hitting a single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher in the bottom of the third.

Despite giving up a single, Weaver remained calm, cooled and collected on the mound as the Winter Haven native would strikeout three to end the top half

In the bottom of the fourth, Dearing would send a single to center and bring in Almonte to make it 6-2 SCF.

At the top of the fifth, Hill II would make a pitching change and send sophomore Nick Romagnola to the mound. Despite putting two runners on, the Hillsborough transfer and Bradenton native would get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Almonte would bring in Wetherell on a groundout to make it 7-2 SCF. Two innings later, Karstetter would show off his power as he did in the game in Panama Beach as the Pennsylvanian sent a two-run blast to left to bring in himself and sophomore Liam Moreno for his third of the season. Karstetter was not the only one to show power as sophomore Mario Lopez Jr. added a two-run blast for his first of the season while bringing in Wetherell.

"When I was at eh plate, I knew we had a chance to end the game," said Lopez Jr on hitting the home run. "I just tried to size more middle away in the at-bat and then he threw a fastball down the middle and I was able to seize the opportunity and hit it out of the yard."

In the bottom of the eighth, the Manatees decided to end the game as Karstetter on an 0-1 count would send a single to center to bring in Almonte for the walk-off win.

"Anytime you get runners in scoring position, you have to get them in," said Karstetter getting the walk-off hit. "As an older guy, you should drive in runs and that's what I wanted to go and I got the job done, which was nice."

Weaver would end up getting his first collegiate win after giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

"The main goals is just get strikes," said Weaver. "I was trying to get my fastball and curveball working and it prevailed altogether.

Mistretta would get the loss after giving up four unearned runs on two hits with four walks in two innings.

Romagnola would throw three scoreless innings of relief with one walk and three strikeouts, while sophomore Evan Mastromauro threw one scoreless inning with one strikeout.

"I know the biggest thing for me is getting ahead in the count early and that's always my mindset," said Romagnola. "I settled in after the first two innings and it worked out and that felt great."

Three Manatees had a multi-hit game. Karstetter and Moreno were 3-for-5 each. Karstetter had the home run, three RBI, one run, one walk and one stolen base, while Moreno had three runs.

Wetherell was 2-for-4 with a walk, three runs and a stolen base, while Lopez Jr. was 1-for-4 with the two-run home run.

Ramirez lead the way for the Royals as he went 2-for-3 with a home run.

Notes:

Karstetter was named the NJCAA Region 8 Player of the Week after his outing in Panama City Beach.

"I just wanted to win and getting this award was nice," said Karstetter on winning the accolade. "Winners get treated different at the end of the day and while the personal accolade was nice, you got to perform as a team and get the win."

"Kevin had a really good week and I wasn't surprised that he earned it," said Hill II on Karstetter's accolade. "It's a huge honor after being the second Manatee to get a weekly award early in the season."

*side note: Freshman Michael Forrett was named the NJCAA Region 8 Pitcher of the Week last week after his no-hitter against Northwest Florida State (January 27).

Hill II also made a bump up on his coaching record as he earned his 350th win as head coach for the Manatees.
