SCF Splits Day Two of NJCAA OWT

Rockford, Illinois - Day two of the NJCAA Opening Weekend Tournament at RV Health Sports Factory in Rockford, Illinois proved to be a strong for the SCF volleyball team (1-3) as they split the second day by defeating Illinois Central (2-2) 3-1 (25-21, 25-14, 20-25, 26-24) before losing to #11 Grand Rapids CC (2-2) 3-0 (18-25, 22-25, 22-25).

SCF vs Illinois Central:
First set was a battle between both teams as they fought to claim the point, but a costly attack error from the Cougars gave the Manatees the first set. In the second set, it was serving that proved to be in favor for the Manatees thanks to three combined service aces from freshmen Kendal Steinert and Isabella Rebimbas and kills from classmates Caelen Cook and Haley Rhoads and sophomore Lana Sandanom, who received her first start this season.

With the Manatees up 21-10 after a kill by freshman Shelby Pillow, the Cougars would start to creep on offense for the next two points before back-to-back kills occurred from Rebimbas and Sandanom. After the Cougars got their final point off of a kill, Sandanom would seal the second set as the native of Toulouse, France would send a tip kill to the front left to give the Manatees a 2-0 lead.

The third and fourth sets also turned to dogfights similar to the first set as the Cougars would take the third set, despite the Manatees comeback from a couple of deficits of at least eight points. In the fourth set, the Manatees faced a challenge towards the end as they were down 23-21, but with their grit and will to not give up, while taking advantage of a Cougar ball-handling error and a kill from Sandanom, the Manatees would tie the set at 23 apiece before the Cougars called timeout.

After the timeout, the Cougars started with an attack before another timeout was called and a Manatee ball-handling error tied the match at 24 apiece, but the Manatees would take advantage of another attack error before Rhoads sealed it with a kill for their first win of the season.

Sandanom would lead the way offensively in the first match as she finished with a career-high 15 kills, one assist, two digs and one block. Rhoads would round out the order in double digit kills as she finished with 12 kills, two digs, one ace and four blocks (two solo).

Cook and Rebimbas followed with nine and six kills respectively. Cook added five digs, while Rebimbas added 10 digs, two aces, one assist and a block.

Freshman Kendall Steinert would lead with 35 assists, a season-high five aces, five kills, six digs and two blocks.
