Raining 3s @ Duke Recap

The FGCU women's basketball team (9-4) closed out their final road game of 2018 as they fell to Duke (8-4) 57-41 at the Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.

"I was really proud of our effort defensively," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "I thought we really competed on the defensive end. Offensively, Duke has some really good athletes (with) length, and I thought they made us a little tentative in our zone offense attack. We weren't moving the ball as well as we would have liked and that led to us having some tough shots, and when we got wide open shots maybe we were a little rushed or something, but we didn't shoot it like we were hoping to."

Junior Nasrin Ulel led the Eagles offensively with 11 points.

Fellow junior Tytionia Adderly added eight points, eight rebounds and a team-high three steals, while redshirt senior Destiny Washington had seven points and team-highs in rebounds (9) and blocks (3). As a team, the Green and Blue shot just 7-for-37 (18.9 percent) from 3-point range and had 15 points over the game's final 21 minutes.

Neither team played particularly well early on as Adderly's shot clock buzzer-beating 3-pointer with 4:46 left in the first quarter was the first field goal for either team. FGCU had each of its four first-quarter field goals from 3-point range, and the final two were banked in from Ulel and sophomore Alyssa Blair to give the Eagles a 13-6 lead through one.

Duke opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run and pushed its lead to six following a three-point play from redshirt junior Haley Gorecki with 3:21 left in the half. Washington and Adderly, however, combined for all six points in a 6-0 run that knotted the game at 26 apiece with 1:08 left in the half.

Following a timeout, however, Duke closed the half on a 5-0 run and opened up a seven-point lead following a Miela Goodchild layup 1:15 into the second half. Ulel responded with five straight points to pull the Green and Blue within two, but the Blue Devils answered with a 5-0 run of their own and opened up a 44-35 lead through three.

From there, the Eagles failed to trim the deficit. A 3-pointer from redshirt sophomore Kerstie Phills with 5:45 left was her team's first points of the quarter, and they ended up accounting for half of FGCU's points in the quarter, and that included a buzzer-beating putback layup from redshirt senior Brittany Johnson to end the game.

FGCU assisted in 11 of its 16 field goals, led by four from redshirt junior Keri Jewett-Giles.

With her eight total rebounds, Adderly now has 662 and has passed Adrianne McNally (658, 2006-10) for third all-time in overall rebounds. Her next milestone is to pass Whitney Knight (735, 2011-12, 2013-16) for second all-time. Adderly needs 74 to pass Knight.

With four of her boards on the offensive and defensive end, Adderly now has 275 offensive boards and 387 defensive boards. For the offensive boards, Adderly remains 55 shy of passing Sarah Hansen (329, 2010-14) as the all-time leader. For the defensive boards, Adderly is 18 away from passing Robyn Swain (404, 2002-04) for fourth all-time.

FGCU MBB vs Ole Miss Recap

Closing out their final away game of 2018, the FGCU men's basketball (5-10) suffered their third loss against a Power 5 Conference team this season as they fell 87-57 to Ole Miss (10-2) inside The Pavilion at Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi.

"A lot of how today went is credit to coach (Kermit) Davis. (Ole Miss) did a really good job defensively," FGCU coach Michael Fly said. "They came out with a lot of energy to start the game. We responded in a positive way, but we just couldn't get back into it after they had a little bit of a run at the end of the half. We also missed some shots around the rim that we normally make.

"We never accept losing in this program, but today was a good learning experience. The positive I take away from the game is we competed for the most part, which is something I'm concerned about more than anything else. "

The Eagles were led in scoring by junior RaySean Scott Jr. The Compton native finished one rebound shy of a double-double as he finished with a with a season-high 18 points and nine rebounds.

Another player that emerged back in session was redshirt senior Dinero Mercurius as he finished with 12 points (3-4 FG, 3-3 3PT, 3-3 FT). Mercurius was playing off the bench.

Junior Decardo Day finished with eight points and tied season-high seven assists.

Sophomore Brian Thomas was second behind Scott Jr. as he finished with four points, three rebounds and a block.

For the Rebels, five players reach double figures in scoring with senior Terence Davis leading the way with 20 points and six rebounds.

Junior Breein Tyree followed with 14 points, six assists and four steals.

Sophomore Devontae Shuler, freshman Blake Hinson and senior Bruce Stevens finished with 11 points each.

The Eagles were 21-for-52 (40.4%) while the Rebels were 31-for-60 (51.7%).

To conclude on this post like the one I did last year, I'm just going to be honest, I'm a little disappointed with our team this year. I mean I understand that it's a rebuilding process on coach Fly's playing style, but to be frank it's not working very well.

The tempo is too fast for us and it's causing more turnovers to occur and very bad ball IQ decisions that were made throughout the season. It's a mess, and the whole team is not taking their time during the game. I mean I understand that they have 30 seconds to shoot the ball and try to get it in the basket and eight seconds to get across the other half of the court, which is rare to see and no big deal, but they do have time and need to slow down when they play and stop rushing their shots. The more they rush, the worse their game gets. It's the small mental mistakes made that cause them to struggle and it's the little details that make the decision.

The big men were not boxing out strong enough and are not even fully using their height to their advantage. Our bigs height range between 6-9 to 6-11 and they're not using it to their advantage. I'm 6-0 and 260 pounds, basically the height of a guard with the body of a power forward/center and based on what I've seen from our bigs, I can box out all of them while drinking a cup of tea in the boiling sun and in bare feet.

I'm sorry that I'm coming out harsh for being this honest about this season, but I'd rather be honest and express my opinions than hold them back like steam in a kettle. It's nothing against coach Fly, but the playing style is just not working.

Now we're hoping conference can save the day for FGCU and help our chances of making it to the national tournament if not the A-SUN Conference Tournament.

Goodbye 2018 and hello 2019.

FGCU Swim & Dive vs Liberty, Buffalo, BGSU Preview

The FGCU swimming and diving team (4-5, 2-0 CCSA) return home from winter break as they open with their first meet of 2019 on Saturday, January 5 at 10 A.M. at the FGCU Aquatics Complex. The Eagles welcome Buffalo (0-1, 0-1 MAC) and Bowling Green (7-0, 1-0 MAC) for the non-conference portion and Liberty (8-0, 2-0 CCSA) for CCSA play. This will be the first time FGCU faces Buffalo and Bowling Green State. In fact, Buffalo and BGSU will also be competing as a MAC Conference meet.

"We are going up against three teams who are very well coached and who are competing at a very high level," said head coach Dave Rollins. "Liberty and Buffalo are probably the best they have ever been, while Bowling Green is responding well to their new coach.  For us, it is great to get the team back together and compete again.  However, the important thing is to make sure everyone is getting healthy and approaching the next seven weeks as we head into the CCSA Championships with the right mindset and focus. We are dinged up. Nevertheless, we'll do our best to compete and win for FGCU. Time for us to step up as a team."

FGCU MBB vs UF Recap

The FGCU men's basketball team (5-9)  fell 77-56 to RV Florida (7-4) in the Metro by T-Mobile Orange Bowl Classic Saturday night inside BB&T Center.

The Eagles saw their three-game win streak halted, while the Gators were able to improve to 7-4 on the year.

"We did some positive things primarily in the first half. We stuck to our game plan and executed both offensively and in our zone," FGCU coach Michael Fly said. "We had some slippage at the very end of the first half. We then let (Florida) jump out on us in the first couple of minutes in the second half. Once you give a really good team like that a cushion, it's really hard to get back into the game."

"I want to say I'm really happy for him, then I start thinking I really should be happy for the team … but I'd be lying," Florida head coach Mike White said later Saturday. "I am happy for the team, but I'm very happy for Jalen, as well. It's been difficult for him, so it was nice to see the ball go in for him."

Sophomore Troy Baxter Jr. finished the night with a team-leading 13 points, marking his first time reaching double figures in eight games. He also pulled down a career-high seven rebounds in the contest. Senior Schadrac Casimir continued his torrid stretch from the free-throw line, ending the night with 10 points thanks in part to a 6-for-6 effort from the charity stripe.

FGCU shot 39.1 percent (18-for-46) from the field, 14.3 percent (2-for-14) from behind the 3-point line and 66.7 percent (18-for-27) from the free-throw stripe.

UF finished with a 45.2 percent (28-for-62) effort overall, 36.7 percent (11-for-30) from distance and 71.4 percent (10-for-14) at the foul marker.

Freshman Noah Locke paced the Gators with 15 points, while senior Jalen Hudson contributed 14 off the bench. Senior Kevarrius Hayes tallied 12 points, and sophomore Deaundrae Ballard added 11.

After a tightly-contested opening handful of minutes, Florida was able to secure a 23-8 advantage at the midway point of the first half.

FGCU would not go away quietly, however. The Green and Blue mounted a 14-3 run to pull within four, but the Gators edged out another mini run to close out the frame with a 37-26 lead. Florida was able to stretch its lead out to beyond the 20-mark margin in the second half, and the Eagles could not find a way back into the game the rest of the way.

"In the first half, we had a few lapses," White said of his defense. "For whatever reason, we came out salivating early in the second half; in a stance, communicating at a high level. We could hear them on the other end of the floor easier than we could hear them right in front of us in the first half. Why? So that's the challenge. Why is there a difference there? How do you get 40 minutes of that and then compliment it with making 3-balls."

Up Next:
The Eagles look to close 2018 as they prepare for their final non-conference road game as they travel to Oxford, Mississippi to face Ole Miss (9-2) at the Pavilion at Ole Miss on Saturday, December 29 at 2 p.m.

Raining 3s vs UAB Recap

The FGCU women's basketball (10-3) wrapped up their last home game of 2018 with a 62-60 nail biter of a loss against UAB (11-1) on day three of the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic in the Alico Arena.

UAB vs Coppin State:
Prior to both teams playing, UAB played Coppin State (0-11) on day two of the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic. The Blazers defeated the Golden Eagles 86-61. The Blazers set a record-breaking 18 3-pointers.

"I was kind of frustrated with our defense and then I looked at the stat sheet and offensively we had a lot of positive things," head coach Randy Norton said. "I look at the assist to turnovers and we had 25 to 11, and 18 3-pointers."

Senior Deanna Kuzmanic led UAB in scoring and rebounding with 17 and eight, respectively. Kuzmanic matched her career high in rebounding en route to being the only player on the team to finish with double digit points in every game this season.

Junior Rachael Childress finished the game with 15 points off of five made buckets from beyond the arc. Childress recorded her 51st 10+ point performance and her 44th game with three or more 3-pointers.

Freshman Margaret Whitley rounded out the Blazers in double figures as she netted a career high 12 points. Whitley finished with a career high four 3-pointers as three came in the third quarter.

UAB's bench outscored Coppin State 36-0 as the Blazers held their opponents bench scoreless for the first time this season. Whitley, Kerstein and Magee accounted for 29 points of the bench's production.

"Our bench came in and played well for us," Norton said. "We knew that they could do that and we knew that tonight we needed to rest some people so our bench was going to be extremely important. They came in and did a great job and it was a great pick me up for the team."

Freshman Jalynda Salley led Coppin State, finishing with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Junior Chance Graham also finished with 22 points.

FGCU vs UAB:
"This is a tough loss," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "I thought we competed on the defensive end, but we didn't execute offensively at a high enough level to win, and we didn't shoot it well enough. The shots were hard to come by. They are a really good defensive team, but when we had our opportunities, we didn't shoot it very well."

"That was a great win over a really good basketball team," Norton said. "Florida Gulf Coast has an outstanding program, are extremely well coached and for our girls to come in and to be able to beat them on their home court is a big deal. I am really proud of our team and the poise they played with down the stretch."

Junior Nasrin Ulel had 13 of her team-high 24 points in the fourth quarter as she helped the Eagles come back from a six-point deficit with 8:15 left. Early on in the quarter, she had a pair of 3-pointers to pull the Eagles within one. Then, with her team down four, she sank a pair of free throws and converted a game-tying layup with 36 seconds left.

On the other end, however, Kuzmanic hit a go-ahead jumper in the paint with nine seconds left. After multiple timeouts, redshirt senior Lisa Zderadicka curled around the left side of the defense, but a reverse layup attempt rimmed out and the Eagles couldn't get off another shot as time expired.

In addition to Ulel's production, Zderadicka chipped in 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting along with two rebounds and two assists. With her 15 points, Zderadicka surpassed 900 career points. She now has 907, including 381 in the Green and Blue after transferring from Houston Baptist prior to the start of last year.

Junior Tytionia Adderly had a game-high 14 rebounds along with a team-high three assists and two steals. Adderly had 11 defensive rebounds to push her career total to 383. In doing so, she surpassed Taylor Gradinjan (381, 2012-18) for third all-time on the program's Division-I era list.

Her two steals also allowed her to surpass Stephanie Haas (108, 2012-16) for sole possession of 10th in D-I era career steals with 110.

Redshirt junior Davion Wingate scored eight of her nine points during a two-minute stretch in the third quarter after FGCU fell behind by eight. In fact, she had the Eagles' first points of the half with 4:45 left in the third.

Kuzmanic, who finished with a game-high 31 points along with eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block, was named the Hilton Garden Classic MVP.

Childress joined Kuzmanic on the Hilton Garden Inn Classic All-Tournament Team after finishing with 12 points. The junior surpassed the 1,000 point mark with a field goal in the first quarter to become the 29th member of UAB's 1,000 Point Scoring Club.

Ulel and Zderadicka represented FGCU on the all-tournament team while Graham represented Coppin State.

The two teams, who entered the game among the nation's best in 3-point shooting, finished a combined 9-for-43 from long distance. UAB, however, hit two of their three in an 8-0 run to break open a tie game at the half and set the tone for the rest of the way. FGCU shot 3-for-4 from 3-point range in the final quarter, but were 3-for-24 prior to that.

FGCU MBB vs Keiser Recap

Fighting beak and talon, with the help of charge taken by junior RaySean Scott Jr. and redshirt senior Schadarac Casimir's game-winning free throws, the FGCU men's basketball team (5-8) managed to pull away with the win as they defeated Keiser (5-9, 2-4 TSC) 87-85 to close out the last home game of 2018.

"Keiser was really competitive tonight. They came here expecting to win the game," FGCU coach Michael Fly said. "I didn't think we competed for most of the night. We were fortunate that Zach (Scott), Caleb (Catto) and some of our guys stepped up for us, but I was disappointed in our effort overall."

As noted, the game was listed as a exhibition/season game meaning it will be listed as a exhibition game for Keiser and a season game for the Eagles that will not count towards their RPI ranking.

Taking the reins on offense was freshman Zach Scott. Scott finished with a career-high 25 points, including a game-tying 3-pointer that help the Eagles. Scott shot 9-of-12 overall and 6-of-8 at the 3-point line.

Scott Jr. was two points shy of a double-double as his finished with eight points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.

Fellow freshman Caleb Cotto also played a big role as he scored a season-high 12 points (5-10 FG, 2-6 3PT).

Redshirt junior Brady Ernst finished with eight points (4-4 FG), two rebounds and two blocks.

Senior Andrija Matic tallied a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Marko Orlic scored a team-leading 24 points, while fellow junior Bryce Thurston added 18 off the bench.

The Eagles ran a perfectly-executed set play to start the game that ended with a vicious dunk Ernst, but that would be the last time they would hold a lead until the second half. KU scored the next six points and eventually stretched their lead out to 46-34 late in the opening frame. A layup from junior Christian Carlyle and a 3-pointer from Catto helped cut the deficit down to 46-39 heading into the break.

FGCU exploded out of the locker room, scoring the first 10 points to go ahead 49-46. However, the visitors continued to connect on outside shots and regained a 63-57 lead at the midway point of the second half.

The Seahawks found their largest lead of the period at 78-70 with 4:49 remaining, but that would not be enough of a cushion to hold the Eagles at bay. The furious comeback featured layups from Catto and junior Decardo Day, and two 3-point baskets from Scott brought FGCU level at 83-83 with 1:28 to play.

Both sides sank a pair of free throws on back-to-back possessions, and Scott Jr. drew a charge with 8.7 seconds left to give the home side one last opportunity to swipe the victory.

On the final possession, Casimir was fouled driving the lane and calmly swished both free throws. Keiser was unable to get a shot off at the buzzer, as the Eagles secured their third win in a row. Scott Jr. was the real hero of the game for taking the charge to help set up those two free throws for Casimir.

FGCU led the evening in points in the paint (32-26) and points off the bench (27-25), while the Seahawks led in points off turnovers (17-16), second-chance points (7-0) and fast-break points (12-0).

Raining 3s vs Coppin State Recap

In a wave of ugly Christmas sweaters, the FGCU women's basketball team (9-2) fought in their second Battle of the Eagles as they clipped Coppin State (0-10) 93-61 on day one of the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic.

"I thought we had a really good first half," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "I thought our defense was good, and as soon as we put Chandler in, she just really went off and got us going. She just caught the ball ready to shoot, got to open areas and was hunting shots. She really got us going offensively, and Davion came in and picked up where Chandler left off. Nas was also attacking the rim and making good decisions. I was really happy with the majority of this game. I thought we played really well for a lot of stretches, and you always look better when you shoot it this well, too."

Offensively, it was redshirt junior Davion Wingate and redshirt sophomore Chandler that would steal the show as the duo finished with 21 points each. Wingate (7-10 FG, 6-7 3PT) would add four rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.

Ryan (7-7 FG, 7-7 3PT) added one rebound and one steal while tying her career-high in points and 3-pointers made.

Junior Nasrin Ulel led all the starters with 15 points (6-12 FG, 2-7 3PT), three rebounds, and four assists.

Junior Tytionia Adderly had two points and eight rebounds with six being on the offensive side. With her six offensive boards, Adderly now has 268 in her career and remains 62 away from passing Sarah Hansen (329, 2010-14) as the all-time leader while her two defensive boards put her at 372 and remains 10 shy of passing Taylor Grandijan (381, 2012-13, 2014-18) for sixth all-time. In overall rebounds, Adderly's eight put her at 640, which ties Robyn Swain (640, 2002-04) for fourth-place on the program's all-time career rebounding list. Adderly is 19 shy of passing Adrienne McNally (658, 2006-10) for third all-time.

Zderadicka had nine points and a team-high five rebounds.

Junior Chance Graham led the Golden Eagles with a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds while senior Brooke Fields added 15 points and six assists.

Redshirt freshman Tsahai Corbie and freshman Jalynda Salley finished with 10 points each.

GCU appeared out of sorts by opening the game 0-for-8 from the field and trailing 5-0, but Nasrin Ulel got the Eagles on the board with a layup just under three and a half minutes in - and then Ryan took over. Ryan made five 3-pointers over the final six minutes and helped her team finish 10-for-12 from the field in the quarter.

The 3-point barrage continued in the second quarter as Ryan, Wingate and redshirt senior Lisa Zderadicka combined for four of them over the first two and a half minutes. In all, the Green and Blue finished 18-for-26 from the field after the tough start to take a 51-22 lead at the half.

Ryan got some rest in the second half by playing only three minutes, but Wingate took control with 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range. In all, eight players recorded at least five points for FGCU, while 11 players reached the scoring column.

The Eagles finished 19-for-49 (38.8%) at the 3-point line while the Golden Eagles were 5-for-17 (29.4%).

"From day one, the 3-point shot has been a major part of our style of play," Smesko said. "Our players like playing that style. They know the difference between a good three and a bad three. It's been something we've consistently done pretty well at, and hopefully we can continue to shoot the ball well throughout the rest of the season."

Last Time Out:
The Eagles hosted NAIA Johnson and Wales and Abilene Christian at the Alico Arena on Friday, December 14 (vs J&W) and Monday, December 17 (vs Abilene Christian). The Eagles pulled away with an overall program record-tying 109-64 win against J&W and an 81-65 win against Abilene Christian. The Eagles' 109 points did break the D1 single-game program record (108 vs Lipscomb 2/27/14).

Offensively, it's the duo of redshirt junior Keri Jewett-Giles and junior Nasrin Ulel that led the way.

Jewett-Giles is averaging 15.3 points and 3.1 assists per game. Although she had only six points against J&W, Jewett-Giles made up for it and finished with 19 points and six assists against Abilene Christian.

Ulel is averaging 15 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Ulel had 14 points against J&W and eight points and three rebounds against Abilene Christian.

Junior Tytionia Adderly has been on key as far as rebounding. Adderly is averaging 7.3 rebounds and 5.7 points per game. Although she did not score against J&W, she did have four defensive rebounds while against Abilene Christian, she had 12 points and nine rebounds with five of them being on the offensive side.

Adderly has 262 offensive rebounds in her career while the four defensive rebounds put her at 366, which is 16 shy of passing Taylor Grandijan (381, 2012-13, 2014-2018) for sixth all-time. In overall rebounds, the Jupiter native has 628 and is 13 away from passing Robyn Swain (640, 2002-04) for fifth all-time.

Redshirt senior Destiny Washington has started in four straight games and has been on top of her game. Washington is averaging 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as well as 1.3 blocks per game. Although she had four points and five against J&W, the Ball State/Loyola Chicago transfer had one of her best games against Abilene Christian as she was flirting for a triple-double with 18 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Her seven steals were the third-most in a single-game in the program's Division-I era and Alico Arena history.

Bench Role:
Off the bench, it's been the tails of redshirt sophomore Chandler Ryan, redshirt junior Davion Wingate and freshman Tanner Bryant.

Although she was held to six points against Abilene Christian, Ryan is currently averaging 10.4 points per game. Against J&W, Ryan had another one of her best games this season as she set a new career-high with 21 points, all from the 3-point line (seven to be exact: another career high) while earning her first start of her career.

A wild card for the team, Wingate came out of nowhere. The Atlanta native is averaging 6.6 points per game. The unexpected moment was against J&W in which she scored a career-high 28 points. In fact, Wingate's 28 points topped her career-high when she was playing at Stony Brook (25 points vs FAMU, 12/20/16) in which she became one of 12 players in program history to produce at least 28 points at least once. As a result, Wingate was named the A-SUN Newcomer of the Week. Wingate had six points against Abilene Christian

Bryant is averaging 5.3 points per game and has been on track among the freshman class. Although she only had one rebound and one assist against Abilene Christian, she set career-highs in points (16), rebounds (7), minutes (31) and field goals (5) against J&W. As a result, Bryant was named A-SUN Freshman of the Week, becoming the first FGCU player in program history to receive A-SUN Freshman of the Week honors

Raining 3s vs Abilene Christian Recap

In a rematch from last season, the FGCU women's basketball team (8-2) defeated Abilene Christian (7-3) 81-65. With the win, the Eagles are now 2-0 against the Wildcats.

"This was kind of a wild game," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "I give Abilene credit. They came after us and pressured us. We didn't do a good job taking care of the basketball. Fortunately, we shot it well enough to overcome way too many turnovers, and we forced a number of turnovers ourselves. We turned those into points quite a few times, and that might have been the difference in the game."

Offensively, it was redshirt junior Keri Jewett-Giles and redshirt senior Destiny Washington that led the Eagles. Jewett-Giles pulled of 19 points (7-12 FG, 2-3 3PT, 2-3 FT), two rebounds and six assists.

Washington finished with a season-high 18 points (8-11 FG, 2-3 FT), eight rebounds and seven steals. Her seven steals were the third highest in a single-game in the program's Division-I era and Alico Arena history.

Junior Tytionia Adderly was rebound shy of a double-double as she finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. With five of her rebounds on the offensive side, Adderly now has 262 in her career while the four defensive rebounds put her at 366, which is 16 shy of passing Taylor Grandijan (381, 2012-13, 2014-2018) for sixth all-time. With her nine total rebounds, Adderly now has 628 and is 13 away from passing Robyn Swain (640, 2002-04) for fifth all-time.

Redshirt senior Lisa Zderadicka and junior Nasrin Ulel finished with eight points each while redshirt sophomore Chandler Ryan and redshirt junior Davion Wingate finished with six points each.

Jewett-Giles, Adderly, Zderadicka, Ulel and Ryan finished with two steals each.

Sophomore Alyssa Blair also added four points and a rebound while freshman Tanner Bryant added a rebound and an assist.

Senior Sara Williamson scored 22 points on 9-10 shooting from the field and junior Dominique Golightly added 19 points.

Despite the double-digit victory and the lead only changing hands twice, the game was a fight the whole way for the Eagles.

Jewett-Giles beat the shot clock with a deep 3-pointer to give FGCU 15-9 lead with 4:38 left in the opening quarter, but the Wildcats scored the final seven and 13 of 15 to take a 24-19 lead through the first 10 minutes.

Ryan scored all six of her points in the second frame on a pair of key 3-point field goals, while Adderly had five points as the Eagles shot 6-for-13 from the field and outscored Abilene Christian 17-9 to take a three-point lead into the break.

With her team clinging to a two-point lead with just under three minutes left in the third, Washington hit a short jumper in the paint and then grabbed an offensive board before scoring two more points on a layup to give FGCU a 53-47 lead.

Moments later, she produced a steal that led to a fast break layup from Blair as the Green and Blue completed a 6-0 run. In the final minute, Washington had a defensive rebound that led to a pair of free throws by Jewett-Giles to give FGCU an eight-point lead.

Abilene Christian trimmed its deficit to six on two occasions over the first three minutes of the fourth, but Washington grabbed a steal and finished a fast break layup to spur an 8-0 run that was finished by both fourth-quarter 3-pointers from Jewett-Giles. Zderadicka then added one of her own to stretch the margin to 15 with 3:50 left. The lead grew to as many as 18 late on a 3-pointer from Wingate.

Up Next:
The Eagles close out their final two home games of the season for non-conference as they host the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic and welcome Coppin State (0-9) and UAB (9-1) to the Alico Arena on Wednesday, December 19 (vs Coppin State) and Friday, December 21 (vs UAB). Coppin State and UAB will play each other on Thursday, December 20.

"Coppin State is coming off a game where they lost a buzzer beater, so I'm sure they'll be hungry to get a win," Smesko said of Wednesday's opponent. "And we'll have a short turnaround to get ready for them. UAB is one of the best mid-majors in the country. That will be really tough. They have so many really good players. They shoot it so well and they have a really good post presence. Plus, they're well-coached. They took Tennessee to overtime on a neutral court, so we'll have to play exceptionally well to have a chance to win."

FGCU S&D vs UNC Asheville Recap

After a month of not competing, and swimming without three of their swimmers, the FGCU swimming and diving team (4-5, 2-0 CCSA) took it to the max as they tamed UNC Asheville (3-4, 1-3 CCSA) 171-91 to close out 2018. With the win, the Eagles are now 2-0 against the Bulldogs.

"It was great to get out and race again," said head coach Dave Rollins. After coming off some challenging training and final exams, the athletes tend to feel off, which is normal. However, getting back into racing is important for us in our preparations for the CCSA Championships. Congratulations to Megan Wakefield on qualifying for Zones on the 1m and we happily welcomed Courtney Chapin back to racing after a semester of setbacks."

"I am very proud of how we competed today," said Asheville head coach Elizabeth Lykins. "I am happy to come away with four wins in individual races against a very strong conference opponent. It was also exciting to have our divers travel with us and compete."

The Eagles were without senior Christina Kaas Elmgreen, sophomore Rebecca Moynihan and freshman Wiktoria Czarnecka as they were swimming in international swim meets in Denmark (Elmgreen), China (Moynihan) and Poland (Czarnecka).

In the first event, the 200 medley relay, the team of sophomore Petra Halmai, juniors Emily Glinecke and Madison Jean and senior Doris Eichorn took the event with a time of 1:49.97. The team of freshman Kellie Fischer, junior Lizzy White, freshman Joslyn Filo and senior Linda Shaw finished third with a time of 1:51.17.

Heading into event two, senior Gracie Redding would take second in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:59.36.

The Eagles would earn a sweep in the one meter diving portion as sophomore Megan Wakefield (181.25), senior Margot Kessler (146.65) and junior Natalie Keffer (128.10) took first, second, and third place respectively. Sophomore Melissa Novak would finish fourth with a score of 117.60.

With the score tied 18-18, the Eagles managed to earn their second sweep in the 50 yard backstroke as sophomore Courtney Chapin (27.09), Eichorn (27.31) and Jean (28.05) took first, second, and third place respectively.

Following the sweep, Glinecke (30.62) and Halmai (30.85) finished second and third respectively in the 50 yard breaststroke.

In the 100 yard butterfly, junior Cassidy Fry (56.01) and senior Nicole Oppel (59.55) took first and second place respectively.

Meanwhile, the Eagles senior Hannah Burdge (24.19) and freshman Joslyn Filo (25.27) finished first and second respectively in the 50 yard free.

Following the 50 yard free, the Eagles would take first and second place in the 100 yard freestyle, which was claimed by Shaw (53.53) and Fry (53.86).

Halmai would finish first in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 59.24.

In the 100 yard breaststroke, Glinecke (1:06.20) and Burdge (1:08.08) finished second and third respectively.

In the 200 yard freestyle, Fry (1:59.15) and Fischer (2:01) took second and third respectively.

The Eagles would earn their third sweep as Eichorn (26.02), Jean (26.24) and junior Karin Schienvar (27.15) took first, second, and third place respectively and putting the Eagles up 142-84 in the 50 yard butterfly.

With two events left, the Eagles would sweep the 100 IM as Halmai (59.73), Schienvar (1:01.74) and Glinecke (1:03.02) finished first, second, and third place respectively while in the 200 freestyle relay, Eagle A Team (Burdge, Redding, Fry and Eichorn) took first with a time of 1:36.48 while Eagle B Team (senior Kiley Eble, Jean, Fischer and Filo) took third with a time of 1:40.98.

"The team did a great job supporting each other and racing tough," stated Rollins. "Definitely lots of positives heading into next semester!"

For the Bulldogs, they managed to get four first place finishes from juniors Catherine Allen (1650 free: 17:40.97) and Skylar Rogan (200 free: 1:58.98) and senior Morgan Rulevich (50 backstroke: 29.73 and 100 breastroke: 1:05.71).

FGCU MBB vs Keiser Preview

The FGCU men's basketball team (4-8) return home to the Alico Arena as they welcome NAIA Keiser University (4-9, 2-4 TSC) on Wednesday, December 19 at 7:30 P.M. for their first ever matchup of their final home game of the new year. The game will also be as part of a doubleheader as the women's basketball team (8-2) faces Coppin State (0-9) in the opening game of the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic.

As usually noted, since Keiser is an NAIA team, the game will be listed as an exhibition for them and will not affect their season record, while for the Eagles it will be a season game but will not affect their RPI ranking.

Last Time Out:
The Eagles are entering with a two-game winning streak after they defeated Oral Roberts in a rematch (96-76) and fellow Cinderella team UMBC (76-53) as part of their two-game road trip and snapping a six-game losing streak.

It was redshirt senior Schadrac Casimir that led the way for the Eagles as he is averaging 12.2 points per game. Casimir had 14 points against UMBC. As a result to go along the 24 point he had against Oral Roberts, the Iona transfer was named A-SUN Newcomer of the Week.

As far as big men, redshirt junior Brady Ernst and sophomore Brian Thomas have also came in clutch.

Ernst has started eight of his 12 games played and is averaging 5.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Although he did not score any points against UMBC, The double transfer from Iowa State and Indian Hills had eight rebounds and two blocks.

Despite only playing three games, Thomas has been a good factor defensively and it shows even if he's averaging 2.7 points per game. As far as rebounding and blocking, Thomas is averaging 4.3 rebounds and two blocks per game. In his return game against Colgate, he had three rebounds and four blocks, while on the road he had 10 combined rebounds and two blocks.

End of the Season:
It was announced that redshirt senior Hannif Cheatham will be ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury. Cheatham was leading the Eagles in points per game (13.2).

"Though I'm really frustrated for Haanif and our program, knowing his character and his competitive drive, he will be back on the court stronger than ever," head coach Michael Fly said. "I'm confident he'll have the opportunity to continue his career at a professional level when he is fully healthy. Haanif has our program's full support and his FGCU family will encourage him throughout the rehab process. Though he's only been at FGCU a short time, he has demonstrated our program's standard of toughness by playing with this lingering injury throughout the season."

Scouting Keiser:
Yes, this is the same Keiser that you would see in commercials for their culinary program with their main campus in Fort Lauderdale, but for the athletics, it is located in West Palm Beach.

The Seahawks are led by interim head coach Bob Starkman and are coming off winning two of their last three games at home where they defeated Florida Memorial (74-63) and Carolina Christian (2-0 via forfeit) before losing to Florida National (79-77). Now in fairness, that is disappointing that they would win one game by forfeit because I'm sure that the Seahawks were looking forward to facing Carolina Christian.

Currently, the Seahawks sit in seventh place in the Sun Conference and will play Mitchell College Tuesday, December 18 at 7 P.M. for non-conference play prior to playing FGCU.

Senior Andrija Matic and freshman Aaron Gedeon lead the way for the Seahawks.

Matic is averaging 15.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. In his last game against Florida National, the Serbian had a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. In fact, the American University transfer has five double-double for the season.

Gedeon is averaging 11.5 points per game. In his last game, Gedeon also had a double-double of 2 points and 12 rebounds.

Sophomore Marko Radulovic and junior Marko Orlic also contribute profoundly.

Radulovic is averaging 10.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game while Orlic is averaging 10.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Against Florida National, Radulovic had 13 points and nine rebounds while Orlic had 10 points and five rebounds.

FGCU S&D vs UNC Asheville Preview

After a month's worth of practice, the FGCU swimming and diving team (3-5, 1-0 CCSA) prepare for their first CCSA Conference matchup as they welcome UNC Asheville (3-3, 1-2 CCSA) to the FGCU Aquatics Complex on Monday, December 17 at noon.

"We are very excited to welcome UNC Asheville this week," said head coach Dave Rollins. "It's a special rivalry as coach [Elizabeth] Lykins was our first-ever assistant coach. She's done an incredible job building the Bulldog program, and to have divers for the first time is exciting from a conference point of view. We're swimming some shorter events which allow us to change our lineup a bit. Plus, with Christina [Elmgreen] and Tori [Czarnecka] at their National Championships and Rebecca [Moynihan] at the World Championships, it's a great opportunity for us to have our team step up in new ways. It'll be great to race again after about a month off from competition."

UNC Asheville is led by Elizabeth Lykins. Lykins enter her sixth season as head swimming coach. In fact, Lykins was an assistant coach for FGCU for five seasons under then head coach Neal Studd before landing the job.

Last Time Out:
The Eagles are coming off of a ninth place finish in the Georgia Tech Invitational, but prior to that, they are also coming off of a split in a tri-meet as they defeated host FAU 185-115 and lost 170-129 against Princeton.

International Losses:
The Eagles will be without three of their swimmers as they will compete in various international swim meets: senior Christina Kaas Elmgreen, sophomore Rebecca Moynihan and freshman Wiktoria Czarnecka.

Kaas Elmgreen competed in the 50 yard fly and 100 meter individual medley at the Denmark National Championship. She finished fourth in the 50 fly before earning a silver medal in the 100 IM.

Moynihan was competing in the World Championship in Hangzhou, China representing Swimming New Zealand. There she finished 14th in the mixed 4x50 medley relay, 15th in the women's 4x50 medley relay, 20th in the mixed medley relay and 28th in the 50 meter freestyle. The New Zealander even set lifetime best records.

Czarnecka will be competing in the Poland National Championship next week.

Key Swimmers and Divers:
Swimmers to watch for include sophomore Petra Halmai and seniors Linda Shaw and Doris Eichorn while for divers include sophomore Megan Wakefield and Melissa Novak and lone senior diver Margot Kessler.

Scouting UNC Asheville:
The Bulldogs are coming off of third place out of 14 teams at the Fall Frenzy Invite on November 16.

Morgan Rulevich broke the program's 100 free record as she was the leadoff leg in the 400 free relay where she clocked in a mark of 51.12 seconds. She would go on to medal on day two placing second in the 100 breast and also on day three, coming in third in the 200 breast.

The Bulldogs' three victories have come against UNF (141-121), VMI (216-63), and Gardner-Webb (115.5-89.5).

Monday's meeting will mark the second time both teams have met. The first time both teams met was on December 18, 2016 in which FGCU came out on top, 154-51 at home.

FGCU MBB @ UMBC Recap

In the battle of Cinderellas, the FGCU men's basketball team (4-8) managed to topple UMBC (6-6) with a 76-53 win Sunday night inside UMBC Event Center.

"I was really proud of our guys tonight. We came out sluggish, which I'm always concerned about when we're on the road. But when we put that press on them, we started to play like the way we want to play," FGCU coach Michael Fly said. "I think UMBC is going to have a really good year. That was a good win for us over a really good team. I was impressed with what I saw on film. I would like to take some of their stuff and implement it into our offense."

The two teams struggled to get into a rhythm out of the gates, as the scoreline read just 3-3 at the first media timeout. Redshirt senior Joe Sherburne caught fire from behind the arc and helped the Retrievers venture on an 8-0 run. UMBC maintained a solid cushion at 15-9, but the Eagles changed up the game plan following a much-needed media timeout.

The Eagles ratcheted up the defense and switched to a full-court press coming out of the under-12 break. That, coupled with an improved effort on the offensive side of the ball, helped the visitors mount a 31-11 run to close out the opening stanza. FGCU entered the locker room on top 40-26.

The Retrievers were able to remain within 14 at 50-36 with 14:40 to play, but a 16-4 surge would create enough separation for the visitors to close out the lopsided triumph.

FGCU committed 13 turnovers to just 11 for UMBC, but the visitors held a huge 44-26 rebounding margin and also led in points in the paint (22-20), second-chance points (10-7), fast-break points (11-4), and bench production (42-16). UMBC was held to just 30.6 percent (19-for-62) overall, 25 percent (8-for-32) from deep and 87.5 percent (7-for-8) at the charity stripe.

Redshirt senior Schadrac Casimir and junior Decardo Day led the way with 14 points and three rebounds apiece. Casimir also added four assists while Day added three rebounds and one steal.

Junior Christian Carlyle and redshirt senior Dinero Mercurius finished with nine points each. Carlyle added four rebounds, two assists and two steals while Mercurius added two rebounds.

Junior RaySean Scott Jr. and freshman Caleb Cotto finished with seven points each. Scott Jr. also added eight rebounds and an assist before fouling out while Cotto added four assists and a steal.

Defensively, sophomore Brian Thomas and redshirt junior Brady Ernst added two blocks each. Thomas also added four points, five rebounds and a steal while Ernst added eight rebounds and an assist.

FGCU shot 51 percent (26-for-51) overall for the game, 52 percent (13-for-25) from behind the 3-point arc and 73.3 percent (11-for-15) at the free-throw line.

Sherburne led the Retrievers with 14 points, while junior K.J. Jackson added 12 for the home side.

SCF Basketball Makes Successful Comeback vs Gordon State

In the wake of a phenomenal second half comeback, the SCF basketball team (8-7) fought tooth and nail to the end as they defeated Gordon State College (6-3) 76-72 for their last home game before the new year and before Suncoast Conference play at Hal Chasey Gymnasium on Friday night.

"We were down with two of our starters and we needed the next man to step it up," said head coach Tom Parks. "We dug ourselves a hole early in the game, but our guys fought as hard as they could, especially in the last 10 minutes. In the last seven minutes on defensive, we held them for three points, and that's what helped us win that game."

Going into the first half, the Highlanders shot 3-pointer after 3-pointer, predominately from sophomore Seth Brown-Carter. The Manatees did manage to cut the deficit briefly, but the Highlanders were barely fazed as they pulled away in the first half leading 50-36.

"We just wanted to keep chipping away a little bit at a time," said Parks on the overall game. "We talked about what we needed the score to be after 15 (minutes) and in the next 10 minutes in the game. We didn't accomplish the goal for the game, but what we talked about was rebounding and containing the ball, and those are two things we didn't control. Those are what we didn't do in the first half. In the second half, especially 10 minutes into the second half, we cleaned up the glass and played our hearts out,"

Going into the second half, despite struggling, the Manatees took advantages of some of the Highlanders costly mistakes, including several fouls, bad passes and poor shot decisions.

On the offensive front, it was the duo of freshman Isiah Dasher and sophomore DeAndre Osuigwe that stepped it up a notch for the Manatees as they took advantage of set screens from freshman Christnoff Scarborough. Along with Dasher and Osuigwe, sophomores Cyrus Barnes and Tre Alexandrea also played key elements as all four cut the deficit to three points and eventually tied the score 70-70 before taking their first lead of the game to make it 72-70 SCF.

After another basket, Gordon State then issued a costly technical foul, which sent freshman Remy Robert II to the line to make one of his two free throws before the Highlanders cut it back to two after a Manatee foul and a pair of free throws to make it 73-72.

With less than 30 seconds left in the game, Osuigwe was sent to the line to make one of two free throws. 11 seconds later, Brown-Carter attempted a 3-point shot at the wing for the win, but to no success as Scarborough secured the final rebound and was sent to the line with 1.3 seconds left in the game. With a final push, Scarborough made both free throws in success for the Manatee won.

Dasher and Osuigwe led the Manatees with a combined 46 points (Dasher, 24; Osuigwe, 22) while Barnes followed with 14, Alexandrea with 10 and Scarborough with three. Dasher, Osuigwe, Barnes and Scarborough each had seven rebounds. Scarborough also added four blocks.

Robert II was held to only one point while fellow freshman Max Richards added two points and four rebounds. Both had the only points off the bench.

"Hats off to guys like Remy, Cyrus, DeAndre and Chris for getting that last rebound and two free throws, but the boards from Isiah really did stepped up to help us get the win," said Parks on his players.

The Manatees, who snapped a two-game losing streak, played without sophomores D'Moi Hodge and Joel Coffey. Hodge is averaging 18.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

"D'Moi is such a versatile player. He does so much for us as one of our best rebounders and one of our best offensive players," said Parks on Hodge. "One of our deficiencies on our team is rebounding and it was tough without him and we struggled earlier on the glass and we're use to having him clean up on that, but he wasn't there to do it, but we found a way in the second half to make our rebounding more effective."

Up Next:
The Manatees head back to Ocala as they face College of Central Florida (CCF) (8-7) on Saturday, December 15 at 4 P.M. for their final game before the winter break.

"Despite their record, CCF is a good team," said Parks on CCF. "They played a lot of good opponents, and right now, they're really hungry to get the win before winter break, so by no means it's not gonna be an easy game. Right now, our focus is getting better every single day, and if we play our best and we lose, we can't hang our heads because we got better and our goal is to play the best possible basketball when we go to the Suncoast Conference Tournament."

*side note: This was my first interview with coach Parks and the first recap for SCF.

Raining 3s vs Johnson and Wales Recap

The FGCU women's basketball team (7-2) opened their four-game homestead with a 109-64 win over Johnson and Wales (3-8, 0-6 TSC). With the win, the Eagles are now 3-0 against the Lions. The Eagles' 109 points broke the D1 single-game program record (108 vs Lipscomb 2/27/14) and tied the single-game program record (109 vs Puerto Rico- Cayey 11/22/05)*.

*Side note: The game vs PRC was when FGCU was a Division II team.

"I thought we shot the ball exceptionally well in the first half," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "Even though we turned it over quite a few times, we were able to get a pretty substantial lead because we shot it so well. Then, in the second half, we got to look a lot of players, some who have been in the rotation and others who haven't played very much. So, they got a chance to go out there and show what they can do."

As noted, the game is listed as an exhibition/season game. The game was ruled an exhibition for the Lions and would not effect their overall record and a season game for the Eagles, but would not effect their RPI ranking.

The lineup had a little tweak as redshirt sophomore Chandler Ryan was placed in the starting lineup for redshirt senior Lisa Zderadicka. Zderadicka was getting much needed rest.

Offensively, it was redshirt junior Davion Wingate that led the team. Playing off the bench, the Stony Brook transfer finished with a career-high 28 points (11-16 FG, 3-6 3PT), five rebounds and four steals. For Wingate, this topped her career high when she was playing at Stony Brook (25 points vs FAMU, 12/20/16) and became one of just 12 players in program history to produce at least 28 points at least once.

Following Wingate was Ryan as she passed her career-high in points for the third time (21) and 3-pointers made (7) for the second time. Ryan also added five assists to the mix. Ryan  is averaging 18.3 points over the past three contests on 16-for-29 shooting from long range.

Another players that played phenomenally off the bench were sophomore Sheahen Dowling, freshman Tanner Bryant and redshirt freshman Tyra Cox

In 25 minutes, Dowling finished with a career-high 10 points with four rebounds and three assists.

Bryant also topped her career-high with 16 points (5-8 FG, 2-5 3PT, 4-6 FT) and seven rebounds.

Cox finished with eight points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Redshirt junior Keri Jewett-Giles played only nine minutes as she finished with six points and three assists.

Although she did not score any points, junior Tytionia Adderly managed to secure four rebounds and two assists. Adderly four defensive rebounds put her at 366 in her career and is 16 away from passing Taylor Grandijan (381, 2012-13, 2014-18) for sixth all-time. In overall rebounds, Adderly now has 623 and is 18 shy of passing Robyn Swain (340, 2002-04) for fourth all-time.

FGCU opened the game on a 10-0 run and led by as many as 23 in the opening quarter following Ulel's steal and fast break layup with 44 seconds left. In the second, Wingate scored eight points during a 13-3 run. Bryant then gave the Eagles a 32-point lead in the final minute with a 3-pointer. The lead grew to as many as 49 in the second half with 1:22 left.

In the first 20 minutes alone, the Eagles shot 22-for-30 (.733) from the field and 10-for-18 (.556) from 3-point range.

The Eagles, who had four of five starters play 13 minutes or less and never trailed against the Wildcats, got 64 points from the bench and forced 20 turnovers, which led to 27 points the other way. New season-highs were set for field goals made (40), field goal percentage (.588) and 3-point field goal percentage (.439).

Sophomore Tianna Ayulo led Johnson and Wales with 25 points, while senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith added 14.

SCF Basketball Readies for Gordon State

For this post, I decided to do something outside of FGCU athletics and go local in my own backyard: Bradenton, Florida. I know what my readers are probably thinking: "Why are you doing a story outside of FGCU?" My answer is this: I just wanted to. I want to go outside of the NCAA and look at teams at the NJCAA level.

This will be about the men's basketball team at my junior college (JUCO), State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota (SCF). The Manatees (7-7) prepared for another home game as they welcome Gordon State College (6-2) to Hal Chasey Gymnasium on Friday, December 14 at 6 P.M. The Manatees are led by first year head coach Tom Parks. Prior to SCF, Parks served as associate head coach for NJCAA Sheridan College in Wyoming before becoming assistant coach for Eastern Florida State College.

Last Time Out:
The Manatees, who are in the Suncoast Conference in the NJCAA Region 8 (FCSAA), are coming off of two losses in the JUCO Shootout in Ocala, hosted by College of Central Florida (CCF). They would fall to Miami-Dade (110-101) and Indian River State (98-82).

Leading the way for the Manatees are freshmen Isiah Dasher and D'Moi Hodge.

Although he was suspended from the game against Miami Dade, Dasher remains in tact. The New Jersey native is averaging 16.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. In the game against Indian River, Dasher was held six points and two rebounds.

Hodge is averaging 18.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. Against Miami, he scored a season-high 50 points, seven rebounds and four blocks while against Indian River, he was pulled out due to an injury while finishing with nine points, two rebounds and one block. Because of his performances, the native of Tortola, British Virgin Islands was named FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 Player of the Week.

Another freshman that has been hot lately is Remy Robert II. Robert is averaging eight points per game and is predominantly the 3-point specialist on the team. At the JUCO Shootout, Robert II had 10 points against Miami-Dade and 17 against Indian River. In fact, the Baton Rouge native has scored at least 10 points in four straight games.

From the sophomore class, DeAndre Osuigwe is averaging 13.1 points per game and leads the team in assists per game (6.4). The Nyack College transfer (NCAA DII) had 11 points and nine assists against Miami-Dade and 16 points and eight assists against Indian River.

Miles Wilson has also been a good factor defensively as he averages 5.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Wilson had 11 points and five rebounds assists against Miami-Dade and six points and two rebounds against Indian River.

Scouting Gordon State:
Gordon State College is located in Barnesville, Georgia and are a part of NJCAA Region 17/GCAA. The Highlanders are coming off of a 73-69 win against St. Pete College and enter the matchup with a three-game winning streak.

Sophomores Oronte' Anderson and Seth Brown-Carter lead the way for the Highlanders. Anderson is averaging 14.9 points and 4.6 assists per game while Brown-Carter is averaging 13.8 points per game. Against SPC, Anderson had 13 points and five assists while Brown-Carter had 19 points.

Freshman Tre GoMillion is also leading the way for the Highlanders as he averages 12 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. GoMillion did not play against SPC, but in his last game against South Carolina Salkehatchie he had nine points and three rebounds.

Promos:
General admission is $5 and for kids, it's $4, but fans can get in for free if they wear an ugly Christmas sweater to the game. Students and staff with an SCF I.D. will get in for free regardless.

*side note: Once the game ends, there will be no replay afterwards.

For my JUCO alma mater, I've actually been scouting some of these players, and I see a lot of potential in some of them that would be perfect for Dunk City. I'd love to have Dasher, Hodge, Robert II and Osuigwe play. The three freshman do need time to grow when they reach the end of their sophomore years. Dasher is like John Wall, a slasher, Hodge can throw down dunks (perfect fit) and Robert II is a sharp 3-point shooter, just like FGCU's redshirt senior Dinero Mercurius. I think Osuigwe would be a good fit too. He can pass the ball really well hence he has a lot of assists per game, and you rarely see pass first guard nowadays, but he has those elements that can fit for Dunk City.

It would really be great to have coach Michael Fly added a Manatee to the team. Softball coach Dave Deiros signed Erica Ward last year and baseball coach Dave Tollett signed Hunter McGarry and Anthony Gonnella this year, so why not sign an SCF basketball player on the team?

Raining 3s vs Johnson and Wales; Abilene Christian Preview

After a brief road trip from Loretto, the FGCU women's basketball team (6-2) return home for a four-game homestead as they first welcome NAIA Johnson & Wales (3-8, 0-6 TSC) on Friday, December 14 and Abilene Christian (7-2) on Monday, December 17 to the Alico Arena.

Last Time Out:
The Eagles traveled on a brief road trip to Loretto, Pennsylvania (an hour and a half west of Pittsburgh) to face Saint Francis University Wednesday night, December 5 at the DeGol Arena. The Eagles defeated the Red Flashes 83-69.

Key Players:
Redshirt junior Keri Jewett-Giles and junior Nasrin Ulel lead the way on offense. Both are averaging 16 points per game. Jewett-Giles is also averaging 2.8 assists per game while Ulel is averaging 3.4 rebounds per game. Should Jewett-Giles and Ulel both finish above 14 PPG, it would represent just the third time since 2007-08 that the team has achieved that - joining the 2008-09 (Adrianne McNally - 14.6, Chelsea Lyles - 14.0) and 2014-15 (Whitney Knight - 14.8, Kaneisha Atwater - 14.2) teams.
