FGCU Softball vs Jacksonville Day Two Recap

The SCF softball team (22-16, 9-3 A-SUN) pulled away with their second sweep in conference play as they defeated Jacksonville (13-28, 1-12) in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon by scores of 7-1 and 5-2. With the wins, the Eagles are now 27-8 against the Dolphins.

"I'm really proud of what our kids did today because we were great against their entire [pitching] staff," said head coach David Deiros. "It didn't matter if it was their No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 pitcher, our team did an awesome job. It's a sign that we're starting to figure out that we have to plan ahead, make adjustments and get after it on who we face."

Game One:
For game one, Deiros sent sophomore Marissa Mesimore to the mound while JU head coach Erica Ayers sent junior Alyssa Bilodeau to counter.

After a scoreless first, the Eagles would begin the onslaught of offense in the bottom of the second. Beginning with a lead-off double by freshman Reedy Davenport before she advanced to third on a fielder's choice from senior Brooke Clemens, junior Mikenzie Vaughn would send Davenport home with a single to left. Clemens would then score the second run after a JU throwing error from a bunt by sophomore Farley Callaghan. Junior Sammi Poehlman would then ground out to send Vaughn home to give the Eagles a 3-0. After freshman McKenna Batterton drew a walk, Callaghan would then score on a passed ball to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead before sophomore Haley Morrell hit an RBI single to send Batterton home for a 5-0 FGCU lead.

The Dolphins would score a run on a fielding error at the top of the third, the Eagles would retaliate in the bottom half. After sophomore Maddie Kaufman came in to pitch in relief for Bilodeau, Callaghan would send sophomore Ahnie Jumper on a sacrifice fly.

Two innings later, the Eagles would add one more run to the scoreboard after freshman Kacie Huber came in with a pinch-hit single to send Poehlman home to make it 7-1 FGCU, which would be the final run brought to the game for an Eagles win.

Mesiemore would earn her eighth win of the season after throwing a complete game, giving up one unearned run on six hits while striking out seven.

Bilodeau would be credited with the loss after two innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on four hits while walking one batter. Bilodeau is now at 7-13 on the year.

Kaufman would throw four innings of relief, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out one batter.

Poehlman would be the only player from both teams with a multi-hit game as she finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Game Two:
For game two, senior Riley Randolph would be the one to take the mound for game two while junior Serena Mora would try to counter.

After two scoreless innings, the Eagles would get on the board first. Beginning with a Poehlman leadoff single before advancing to second on a throwing error and stealing third, Batterton would send a triple to right center and send  Poehlman home for a 1-0 FGCU lead.

After senior Kate Kelly reached on a fielder's choice, Bilodeau would come in for Mora, who would move to being the designated player. Morrell would then bring in Batterton home with a single down the middle before she and Kelly advanced to another base for senior Racquel Fournet. With an 0-1 count, Fournet would send a double to left center and send Kelly and Morrell home for a 4-0 FGCU lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Fournet would add to the first with an RBI single for a 5-0 FGCU lead, but the Dolphins would get on the board with a two-run shot by junior Makenzie Buss. This was her sixth home run of the season. The Eagles would counter with a run in the bottom half of the sixth. After Kaufman came in, Callaghan would begin with a leadoff double. One batter later, sophomore Ahnie Jumper would send a double deep to left center to send Callaghan home. Kelly would then follow with an RBI single to make it 7-2 FGCU before Randolph sealed the deal for the Eagles win.
