The FGCU baseball team (3-2) earned a 10-0 shutout victory over LIU Brooklyn (0-4) in the first game of a weekend non-conference series Friday night at Swanson Stadium.
The Eagles needed just two pitchers to toss a clean nine innings. Sophomore Nikolas Bitner (1-0) earned his first win donning the Green and Blue, while junior Trey Vickery collected the first save of the year for the staff.
"This was a good night for us. (LIU Brooklyn) is a good club. They were in (an NCAA Championship Regional) last year, and they returned a lot of guys," FGCU coach Dave Tollett said. "We only had to use two guys (on the mound) and both of them did a good job. I'm very happy for both of them. Offensively, you can never be upset with 10 runs on a Friday night. We've still got some work to do to become more consistent, but we put together some quality at-bats tonight."
FGCU cranked out 13 hits to just four from the visitors. Senior Keith Stevens, junior Richie Garcia and senior Eric Gonzalez all finished with a pair of hits. Garcia totaled two RBIs and a run, while junior Anthony Gonnella drove in two teammates and scored once. Garcia and fellow juniors Alex Brait and Marc Coffers all scored twice.
Garcia opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning. Later in the inning, Gonnella drove in a run on a single and later was able to touch home from third while sophomore Christian Proffitt was being caught in a rundown. The Eagles blew the game open with a four-spot in the third. The RBIs were scattered throughout the lineup and were attributed to Brait, Stevens, Garcia and Gonnella.
A trio of insurance tallies from the home team in the seventh and eighth would complete the scoring.
Bitner lasted 5.1 innings and gave up just three hits and three walks, while striking out four. Vickery pitched the final 3.2 innings and allowed just one hit and two walks, while issuing one punchout.
The four hits from the Blackbirds were sprinkled between Tim Bechtold, Gregory Vaughn, Brock Hallum and Joe Mercadante. Vaughn roped a one-out triple in the sixth but was stranded at third thanks to a double play.
Starting pitcher Zach Pederson (0-2) was tagged with the loss after conceding seven runs on eight hits in 3.0 innings of work. He struck out four and walked one. Nick Torres tossed a clean 3.0 frames in relief, and Anthony Rupp, Jonathan Schreier and Frank Cerillo combined to allow three runs on four hits in the final 2.0 frames.
FGCU has now scored double-digit runs in three of five games to open the new campaign. The 48 runs through the first five games is the hottest start to a season for the Eagles since 2010 (49).
Up Next:
The series will continue at noon Feb. 23. The Saturday tilt has been pushed back an hour from the original started time of 11 a.m. The Blackbirds are off to a slow start this season, but they won the Northeast Conference Championship last year and advanced to an NCAA Championship Regional. The weekend games will be the first in school history between the two programs.

I felt like Bethune-Cookman tested us well in doubles and at a few spots in singles, they definitely made us close out the matches. Now we have to shift our focus to a really tough Charlotte team on Sunday. I hope we can get another good crowd out there for that one."
In doubles play, the Eagles came away with the first point of the afternoon as they claimed the top two courts. Junior Marcelo Tebet and sophomore Juan Montes (2-1) teamed up to register a 6-4 decision, while the pairing of juniors Feliksas Sakalauskas and Felipe Ramirez (1-2) clinched it for the Eagles in a tough 7-5 battle. Court No. 3, which was suppose to be against the team of senior Javier Fernandez and freshman Pedro Maciel (1-0), was forfeited by BCU. Maciel was making his debut after graduating from Goliath Academy in West Palm Beach.
Going into singles FGCU gained another win as BCU forfeited the match on court No. 6, which was suppose to be against sophomore Nicolas Tibaudin (1-0).
The first match to finish in singles competition came on the premier court as Montes (3-3) made it 3-0 FGCU with a 6-1, 6-3 decision. The triumph gives Montes his first win of the season on court No. 1 (1-2). Shortly after, Sakalauskas (4-1) bumped FGCU's lead to 4-0, also taking down his counterpart in straight sets (6-4, 6-3), in the process clinching the match for the Eagles. On court No. 4, Tebet (2-3) claimed FGCU's third straight-set victory, cruising to a 6-4, 6-2 win for the 5-0 advantage.
After producing a 6-2 first set win, Ramirez (2-3) suffered a 7-6 setback in the second set but responded back with a 10-7 third set tiebreaker to make it 6-0 FGCU. Maciel (0-1) battled tough on court No. 5 but would fall in a tiebreaker in the third set, 11-9.

FGCU Softball: Strike Out Cancer Tournament Preview
The FGCU softball team (5-4) will hit the road for the first time this season as the squad travels to to Boca Raton for the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament, hosted by FAU. The tournament will also feature UConn.
Last Time Out:
The Eagles split a pair of games on the final day of the FGCU Invitational, falling to Lamar 4-1, before bouncing back with a 5-0 win over Memphis. One of the highlights over the weekend was FGCU hosting No. 2 world ranked Team Japan. In that game, the Green and Blue came back down from 2-0 deficit, before taking a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth which included a three-run home run from freshman Kyleigh Taylor en route to the 7-5 final.
Junior Sammi Poehlman leads the Eagles in hitting with a .333 BA, tallying two RBI while sophomore Farley Callaghan is hitting .313 with three RBI.
In the circle for the Green and Blue, the pitching staff collectively hold a 0.78 ERA. Senior Riley Randolph is 3-2 boasting a 0.21 ERA and is holding opposing batters to a .197 BA. She's struck out 39 batters in 33 innings of work.
Scouting the Huskies:
UConn (3-5) recently competed in the Upstate Classic last weekend. The squad has been hitting .208 over the last five games. Carli Cutler leads the way for the Huskies batting .348 with five RBI. Meanwhile, Briana Marcelino is hitting .308 with four RBI.
In the circle, Marybeth Olson is 1-1 with a 1.24 ERA in 17 innings of work pairing that with 17 strikeouts. The pitching staff as a whole holds a 4.06 ERA.
The Eagles are 5-0 all-time against UConn, as they took both meetings last year 8-3 and 2-1 at home.
Scouting the Owls
FAU (3-7) will play Stetson Friday afternoon as six of its opponents they've faced this year have been ranked, five of which they squared off against last weekend at the St. Pete/Clearwater Invitational. Offensively, Danielle Bieberie is hitting .400 with three runs scored while Mia Olson holds a .241 BA with a team-best four RBI.
In four appearances this season, Kelsey Morrison is 1-1 with a 1.24 ERA and is holding batters to a .210 BA. FAU has utilized six pitchers so far as they hold a collective ERA of 2.68.
FGCU trails the all-time series 4-6 as the Eagles split last year on the road with the Owls.

FGCU opened up its conference slate taking down A-SUN rival UNF, 5-2. Despite dropping the doubles point, the Eagles bounced back in strong fashion during singles competition. The Green and Blue garnered a win on each court besides the top slot. Senior Javier Fernandez officially clinched the fourth point on court No. 5.
Fernandez took his first set 7-6 and would then fall in the second set, 1-6. Unfazed, the Spain Native came away with a 6-4 third set triumph to seal the deal.

The Wildcats enters Friday's matinee with a 1-1 record as its last two matches have been postponed. The Wildcats have five players on their roster but that didn't stop them from collecting their first victory (4-3) of the season against A-SUN foe Stetson in late January.
Since BCU is short-handed, its doubles have not won a match all season. In singles action, Juan Navarro is 2-0 on court No. 2 while Victor Bravo has gone 1-1 in the top slot.
The last meeting between both squads came back in 2017 as FGCU came out on top 7-0. Coincidentally, the Eagles are actually 7-0 against the Wildcats.

The 49ers has a 3-6 overall record and will face USF Friday afternoon prior to making their way down to Fort Myers. When it comes to doubles play, the 49ers pairing of Luca Keist and Constandinos Christoforou are ranked No. 18 nationally (7-2 record on court No. 1).
In singles competition, Keist is ranked No. 71 as he holds a 4-5 record on the premier court. Henry Lieberman (12-15) and Oriol Forne (11-7) are the only other two 49ers who have collected 10 or more wins bridging the fall and spring seasons.
Both teams met for the first time in 2017 as FGCU outlasted Charlotte in a 4-3 battle.

SCF Softball Readies for Seminole Tournament
The SCF softball team (13-1) return to neutral grounds as they travel to compete in the two-day Seminole Tournament at Boombah Soldiers Creek Park in Longwood, Florida on Saturday, February 23 to Sunday, February 24. The Manatees, who are ranked #4 in the NJCAA Region 8 Softball Coaches' Poll, will faceoff against Tallahassee Community College (TCC) (7-11) at 1:45 pm and St. Johns River State (6-8) at 3:45 pm on Saturday before facing Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) (9-7) at 9 am and Chattanooga State Community College (CSCC) (6-1) at 11 am on Sunday. The Manatees are entering the Seminole Tournament with an 11-game winning streak dating back to January 26 against Pasco-Hernando State.
Last Time Out:
The Manatees are coming off of sweeping a series against Lake Sumter State College where they finished a 7-2 suspended game from February 7 before wrapping up the series with a 6-3 win and a 3-0 win against the Lakehawks, thus sweeping the series.
To 150 and Beyond:
For head coach Mandy Schuerman, who enters her fifth season as head coach for the Manatees, she will be going for 150th career win as head coach for SCF. Schuerman joined SCF fall 2014 after spending the 2014 season as a head coach for Bloomingdale High, while leading them to the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) 8A State Championship title with a record of 28-3.
The former Gator, two-time team captain (2003-04), SEC Co-Freshman of the Year and All-SEC Second-Team member began her inaugural season with SCF in 2015 where eight Manatees were named on both the Suncoast Conference First and Second Teams with Erica Ward also being named on the FCSAA All-State while being named Suncoast Coach of the Year in her first season.
Since being under Schuerman's helm, the Manatees have had at least two players named to the Suncoast Conference First and Second Teams or Suncoast Honorable Mention (12 First Team, 12 Second Team, 4 Honorable Mentions). Along with Ward, two other players have been named to the FCSAA All-State Second Team under Schuerman's wing, Lindsey Hall and Taylor Engman.
Currently, Schuerman is 145-83 and is only five away from reaching the milestone. Schuerman earned her 100th win on February 3, 2018 against Seminole State College (4-2).
Key Players:
At the plate, key bats for the Manatees include sophomores Cheyenne Nunez and Haley McFadden and freshmen Madi LoCastro, Sabrina Long, Makayla Benavidez and Lauren Bostwick.
Nunez is batting .326 (14-for-43) and leads the team in runs (18) and stolen bases (12). In the series against Lake Sumter, Nunez was 4-for-12 (.333) with four runs and six stolen bases. In fact, Nunez has 35 in her career.
McFadden is batting .355 with 11 hits and five RBI despite going 1-for-6 with an RBI against LSSC.
LoCastro is one of two hybrid players on the team at the plate and on the mound. At the plate, LoCastro is batting .395 with four home runs and 14 RBI while on the mound, she is 2-0 with a 2.33 ERA and seven strikeouts. Against LSSC, LoCastro was 7-for-13 (.538) with a home run and two RBI In her last game on the mound, she threw six innings in relief while giving up one run on four hits and four strikeouts.
Long follows behind LoCastro as she is batting .312 with two home runs and 12 RBI. Long did go 2-for-12 (.167) against LSSC with a home run and three RBI.
Benavidez leads the team with a .417 batting average (15-for-36), three RBI and four stolen bases. Benavidez was 4-for-11 (.364) with two runs and two stolen bases.
Although mostly as a pinch runner, Bostwick is batting .250 (5-for-20) with eight runs, four RBI and eight steals. In the overall series against Lake Sumter, Bostwick was 3-for-8 (.375) with two stolen bases and an RBI.
On the mound, freshmen Kailey Christian and Ashley Zientek lead the way.
Like LoCastro, Christian is also a hybrid player at the plate and on the mound. At the plate, Christian is batting .364 (12-for-33) and is second behind LoCastro in RBI (13), while on the mound she is 6-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 49 strikeouts. Against Lake Sumter, Christian went threw 15 combined innings, giving up two runs on six hits, walking four and striking out 19. In her last game, she threw a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. At the plate, she was 1-for-6 with two RBI.
Zientek is 4-1 with a 1.99 ERA and 23 strikeouts. Zientek finished the suspended game against Lake Sumter with a complete game while giving up two unearned runs on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts, but in her most recent start she gave up four two runs on four hits with one strikeout, which led to a no-decision.
Overall, SCF sits in the top 10 in seven categories in the FCSAA: on base percentage (.401, 8th), stolen bases (38, 5th), strikeouts (85, 4th), strikeouts per seven innings (6.79, 5th), ERA (2.08 3rd), fewest errors (19, 6th) and fielding percentage (.951).
Scouting TCC:
The Eagles are entering the tournament on a three-game losing streak after losing the series to Santa Fe College, winning the first game (3-0) before losing the last three games (2-0, 4-3, 7-6).
At the plate, freshman Olivia Russell is leading the team with a .385 batting average, 20 hits, two home runs and nine RBI. Russell batted .181 against Santa Fe with three walks.
On the mound, sophomore Sidney Mathis has a 4-5 record with a 3.14 ERA and 32 strikeouts. In her most recent game, Mathis faced a no-decision after throwing six innings while giving up five runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts against Santa Fe.
Scouting St Johns River:
The Vikings are coming off of a series loss to Eastern Florida State on Sunday, February 17 where they fell 8-3 in the first game and 12-4 (5) in the second.
Freshman Bri Clapper leads the team with a .438 batting average and 10 RBI. Clapper was 4-for-7 with an RBI against EFSC.
Meanwhile on the mound, freshman Maddie Tomas is 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA and 11 strikeouts. In her last game, Tomas threw 2.1 innings while giving up one run on one hit with one walk in an 8-7 loss to St. Pete College.
Scouting Abraham Baldwin:
The Stallions are entering the tournament from NJCAA Region 17/Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) and are coming off of sweeping a series against the JV team of NAIA Thomas University (7-4, 13-1 (5), 2-0, 8-0 (5)).
At the plate, freshman Taylor Layfield is batting .300 with a home run and 11 RBI while also being 2-1 with a 1.27 ERA and 34 strikeouts. In her last game, Layfield threw one scoreless inning against Wallace-Dothan on the mound while at the plate, she went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
Joining Layfield on the mound is sophomore Samantha Davis. Davis is 2-1 with a 2.46 ERA and 44 strikeouts. In her last game, Davis threw a complete game against Thomas University JV where she gave up three runs on eight while walking one and striking out four.
Scouting Chattanooga State:
The Tigers enter the tournament representing NJCAA Region 7/Tennessee Junior Community College Athletic Association (TJCCAA) in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They are coming off of two wins against Coastal Alabama - Brewton (7-0), Coastal Alabama-Bay Minette (10-3) and Wallace-Dothan (7-3) in the Gulf Coast Classic I Softball Tournament.
At the plate, sophomore Shelby Penning is batting .500 with two home runs and eight RBI. Penning was 5-for-13 the last three games with a home run and three RBI.
On the mound, freshman Brooke Parrott is 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA and 19 strikeouts. In her last game, Parrott threw eight innings against Wallace-Dothan while giving up three runs on six hits, walking two batters and striking out seven.
Series History (2012-present):
While it will be the first time the Manatees play Chattanooga State, the Manatees are 4-4 against TCC, 8-6 against SJRS and 1-0 against ABAC.
Last time the Manatees and Eagles met was on April 29, 2016 during the FCSAA State/NJCAA Region Tournament in Vero Beach where the Manatees won 7-5. The last time the Eagles defeated the Manatees was in FCSAA State/NJCAA Region Tournament on May 2, 2015 where they won 5-4.
Last time against the Vikings, the Manatees dropped the series 3-1
(2/8/17: 8-0; 2/21/17: 9-1 and 4-3). SCF's lone win was on February 8, 2017 where they won 4-2.
It will be the second time the Manatees play the Stallions. The first time was on January 30, 2016 where the Manatees won 11-1.

At the plate, she was 1-for-6 with two RBI.
Zientek is 4-1 with a 1.99 ERA and 23 strikeouts. Zientek finished the suspended game against Lake Sumter with a complete game while giving up two unearned runs on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts, but in her most recent start she gave up four two runs on four hits with one strikeout, which led to a no-decision.

The Eagles are entering the tournament on a three-game losing streak after losing the series to Santa Fe College, winning the first game (3-0) before losing the last three games (2-0, 4-3, 7-6).
At the plate, freshman Olivia Russell is leading the team with a .385 batting average, 20 hits, two home runs and nine RBI. Russell batted .181 against Santa Fe with three walks.
On the mound, sophomore Sidney Mathis has a 4-5 record with a 3.14 ERA and 32 strikeouts. In her most recent game, Mathis faced a no-decision after throwing six innings while giving up five runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts against Santa Fe.
Scouting St Johns River:
The Vikings are coming off of a series loss to Eastern Florida State on Sunday, February 17 where they fell 8-3 in the first game and 12-4 (5) in the second.
Freshman Bri Clapper leads the team with a .438 batting average and 10 RBI. Clapper was 4-for-7 with an RBI against EFSC.
Meanwhile on the mound, freshman Maddie Tomas is 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA and 11 strikeouts. In her last game, Tomas threw 2.1 innings while giving up one run on one hit with one walk in an 8-7 loss to St. Pete College.

The Stallions are entering the tournament from NJCAA Region 17/Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) and are coming off of sweeping a series against the JV team of NAIA Thomas University (7-4, 13-1 (5), 2-0, 8-0 (5)).
At the plate, freshman Taylor Layfield is batting .300 with a home run and 11 RBI while also being 2-1 with a 1.27 ERA and 34 strikeouts. In her last game, Layfield threw one scoreless inning against Wallace-Dothan on the mound while at the plate, she went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
Joining Layfield on the mound is sophomore Samantha Davis. Davis is 2-1 with a 2.46 ERA and 44 strikeouts. In her last game, Davis threw a complete game against Thomas University JV where she gave up three runs on eight while walking one and striking out four.
Scouting Chattanooga State:
The Tigers enter the tournament representing NJCAA Region 7/Tennessee Junior Community College Athletic Association (TJCCAA) in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They are coming off of two wins against Coastal Alabama - Brewton (7-0), Coastal Alabama-Bay Minette (10-3) and Wallace-Dothan (7-3) in the Gulf Coast Classic I Softball Tournament.
At the plate, sophomore Shelby Penning is batting .500 with two home runs and eight RBI. Penning was 5-for-13 the last three games with a home run and three RBI.
On the mound, freshman Brooke Parrott is 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA and 19 strikeouts. In her last game, Parrott threw eight innings against Wallace-Dothan while giving up three runs on six hits, walking two batters and striking out seven.
Series History (2012-present):
While it will be the first time the Manatees play Chattanooga State, the Manatees are 4-4 against TCC, 8-6 against SJRS and 1-0 against ABAC.
Last time the Manatees and Eagles met was on April 29, 2016 during the FCSAA State/NJCAA Region Tournament in Vero Beach where the Manatees won 7-5. The last time the Eagles defeated the Manatees was in FCSAA State/NJCAA Region Tournament on May 2, 2015 where they won 5-4.
Last time against the Vikings, the Manatees dropped the series 3-1
(2/8/17: 8-0; 2/21/17: 9-1 and 4-3). SCF's lone win was on February 8, 2017 where they won 4-2.

FGCU S&D: CCSA Championship Day Two Recap
The FGCU swimming and diving team surged into second place and now sit with 648 points at the conclusion of day two of the CCSA Championships being at the Liberty Natatorium.
"We had a great night!" head coach Dave Rollins said. "We started with the incredible news that our 800 free relay disqualification was overturned and that really brought momentum our way. Congrats to the 200 free relay team on the win and Megan for winning her second board, this time in a school record. We are racing tough and the energy has been incredible. They support each other so well."
With a seed time of 1:31.12, the Eagles came out and captured the first finals event of the evening, the 200 free relay. Seniors Gracie Redding and Hannah Burdge, freshman Wiktoria Czarnecka and sophomore Rebecca Moynihan combined to produce a swim of 1:30.02, etching a new season-best mark to give the Eagles a vital 70 points. Czarnecka and Moynihan registered lifetime best splits in the process.
On top of the 200 free relay win, FGCU learned that its second place 800 free relay time (7:20.78*) was reinstated, giving the Eagles another critical 62 points. The 800-free relay team consisted of seniors Linda Shaw, Antonia Baerens and Burdge and junior Elizabeth Zeiger.
A day after taking the 1-meter dive crown, sophomore Megan Wakefield repeated as champion, this time in the 3-meter dive. In her six dives, the Ontario native accumulated a total of 336.5 points – shattering her season-best mark of 293.65 – en route to a new school record.
Transitioning into the 500 free A Final, Shaw placed third with a time of 4:52.35* to score 30 points as Baerens registered 26 points with a swim of 4:58.78.
In the 200 IM C Final, junior Emily Glinecke captured first with a time of 2:07.01*. The Eagles made up more ground in the A Final as sophomore Petra Halmai (2:01.75), senior Christina Kaas Elmgreen (2:01.86*) and senior Doris Eichhorn (2:02.96*) finished 2-3-4, respectively.
The 50 free was the final event of the night and it started with junior Cassidy Fry taking third in a C Final with a mark of 24:11*. In the A Final, Redding hit an NCAA 'B' cut time as she touched out in 22.65 for the first-place title along with 35 points.cCzarnecka finished right behind her with a time of 23.05*, collecting 30.5 points. Moynihan (23.13) and Burdge (23.55) rounded out the scoring finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
"We, all the teams, are all in the same boat when it comes to the delays and timing malfunctions so we have to ignore those distractions and focus on our races," added Rollins. "We've had 21 season-best times and 16 lifetime best performances so far with two days still to go. There are a lot of races left and we have a huge day tomorrow."

The FGCU women's basketball team (22-4, 13-0 A-SUN) used a 27-0 run in the first half to pull away from Lipscomb (3-23, 1-12 A-SUN) in an 80-46 win Tuesday in the Curb Event Center on the campus of Belmont University. With the win, the Eagles are now 25-0 against the Lady Bison.
In doing so, the Eagles clinched at least a share of the program's ninth A-SUN regular season championship. They can secure it outright along with the No. 1 seed in the A-SUN Championship with a win at home against Kennesaw State on Saturday.
"We really picked up the defensive intensity in the second quarter, and it allowed us to go on a nice run," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said.
Lipscomb led 15-11 with 3:09 left in the opening quarter, but redshirt sophomore Chandler Ryan's 3-pointer spurred a 27-0 run that gave the Eagles a 38-15 lead with 2:08 left in the half. In all, FGCU's defense held the Bison scoreless for an 11:29 stretch.
In the second quarter alone, Lipscomb finished 1-for-7 from the field with nine turnovers while being outscored 26-4 by the Green and Blue. Offensively, the Eagles had more made field goals (8) from seven different players than the Bisons had attempts in those 10 minutes. Along with a nine-point third quarter, FGCU has now produced 18 single-digit quarters defensively in A-SUN play this year.
The outcome ran FGCU's winning streak to 13 straight, which is tied with Stephen F. Austin for the fourth-longest streak in the nation. It is also tied for the 10th-longest streak in program history.
After experiencing the program's worst two-game stretch in terms of 3-point field goal percentage (9-for-64, .141) of the Division-I era, FGCU made 15-for-49 (.306) from long range against Lipscomb. Nasrin Ulel (5-for-9) led eight different players to make at least one, while a trio of others made two apiece.
Redshirt senior Destiny Washington tallied a game-high 17 points while adding eight rebounds and a game-high four blocks. She finished 5-for-9 from the field, including a 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter that gave her 1,000 points in her NCAA career. She became just the second player to join the 1,000 point, 600 rebound, 100 steal and 100 assist club while wearing the Green and Blue (Whitney Knight).
Ulel added 15 points, five rebounds and two assists. Junior Tytionia Adderly and redshirt junior Keri Jewett-Giles each had a game-high four assists, while redshirt sophomore Kerstie Phills had nine points and a season-high nine rebounds off the bench.

FGCU MBB vs Lipscomb Recap
The FGCU men's basketball team (12-17, 7-7 A-SUN) upset A-SUN Conference leader Lipscomb (21-6, 12-2 A-SUN) 67-61 Wednesday night in Alico Arena.
The Eagles increased their A-SUN-leading home win streak to six games. The victory could not have come at a better time, as the Green and Blue continue to battle for a top-4 spot in the conference standings. With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, NJIT (19-9, 7-6) maintained its third-place position, while the Eagles are still tied for fourth with North Florida (13-16, 7-7). North Alabama (9-19, 6-7) is in solo sixth, and Jacksonville (11-16, 5-8) sits in solo seventh.
The top four teams at the end of the regular season will earn home games in the opening round of the 2019 A-SUN Championship on March 4.
"I'm really proud of our entire roster tonight. We were able to find a way to play harder than those guys toward the end. They're as good a team as we've played all year," FGCU coach Michael Fly said. "We normally do goals for the game. I told them after the game to throw the goals out because tonight they played as hard as they could possibly play on almost every possession, and that's why we won the game."
“They (FGCU) definitely defended us well. Their plan was good and they gave us some problems early,” Lipscomb head coach Casey Alexander said. “I didn’t think we believed in what we were supposed to do offensively when teams guard us the way they did.
“I thought we panicked a little big and got too stagnant, but we also had some good looks that just didn’t go down.”
The Eagles received big-time efforts from multiple players, including a game-high 16-point contribution from redshirt senior Dinero Mercurius. The senior went 7-for-7 at the free-throw line and added five rebounds. Classmate Schadrac Casimir scored 15 points, while junior Christian Carlyle contributed 13 points of his own. True freshman Zach Scott tallied eight points and a season-high eight rebounds, while sophomore Brian Thomas finished with seven rebounds and a career-high six blocks.
“They guarded us completely different than they did the first time, as they went almost entirely man tonight,” Alexander said. “They switched a lot of screens and let us play 1-on-1 in the post.
“We’ve got really good post players and tonight just wasn’t their night. They have carried us all year long, but we didn’t do enough to help them. We are going to keep throwing it to them.”
The visitors came out early and showed why they are ranked No. 36 in the nation by taking an early 11-5 advantage. The Eagles answered right back and showed the power of Alico by countering with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the game. Neither team went on top by more than four points the rest of the first half, and it was the Bison who were able to grind into a 26-23 lead with less than four minutes left. An and-1 from Carlyle and four points from true freshman Caleb Catto helped FGCU close the half on a 7-2 run to take a 30-28 lead. The result marked the second time all year during league play that Lipscomb both had failed to reach 30 points in the first half and trailed at the break.
The Eagles built a 35-30 advantage across the first two minutes of the second half, but the Bisons scored the next 10 points to move ahead by five. Lipscomb was able to stretch its advantage out to 49-42 with 9:30 remaining on the clock, but the Green and Blue scored the next seven points to pull level at the 6:33 mark.
The next two possessions saw the Bisons continue to find leads, but the home team also continued to counter with buckets of their own. A 5-0 run gave the Eagles a slim 56-53 advantage with four minutes remaining, but a pair of free throws from Lipscomb brought the visitors to within one at the 3:41 mark. That began the most important sequence of the game. FGCU chewed nearly two entire minutes off the clock thanks to three huge offensive rebounds, two that were hauled in by junior Brady Ernst. The possession ended with two Mercurius free throws, and a Carlyle jumper in the paint with 58 seconds left put the Green and Blue on top by five. The Eagles went 11-for-12 on their free-throw attempts down the stretch to make sure they would hold on for the upset victory.
FGCU finished the game with 10 blocks, which was the first time reaching double figures in that category since Dec. 28, 2015 (at South Dakota). The Eagles also led the night in points in the paint (28-26) and bench production (23-18).
The home team shot 39.3 percent (22-for-56) from the field, 21.7 percent (5-for-23) from beyond the 3-point arc and 85.7 percent (18-for-21) at the free-throw line. Lipscomb was held to just 29.4 percent (20-for-68) overall, 31.8 percent (7-for-22) from distance and 77.8 percent (14-for-18) at the charity stripe.
The Bisons were held to their worst overall shooting day since Nov. 18, 2017 (at Texas). This also marked their worst shooting production against a conference opponent since Feb. 15, 2015 (at USC Upstate).

The Bisons were held to their worst overall shooting day since Nov. 18, 2017 (at Texas). This also marked their worst shooting production against a conference opponent since Feb. 15, 2015 (at USC Upstate).
A-SUN leading scorer Garrison Mathews needed 17 shots just to finish with 16 points. This was the second time all season – and the first since Dec. 4 at Belmont – that he scored fewer points than shots taken. Kenny Cooper added 13 points, and Andrew Fleming contributed 10.

FGCU S&D: CCSA Championship Day One Recap
Claiming two events Wednesday evening, the FGCU swimming and diving team sits in fourth place after day one of the CCSA Championships at the Liberty Natatorium.
"A lot of great performances today," head coach Dave Rollins said. "We had 10 lifetime bests swims either individually or on relays, plus we had two event wins. You hate to see a relay disqualification, but it's part of our sport and we have to focus on being better moving forward. Each session is a new opportunity. Tomorrow is a great day for us and we're looking forward to it."
FGCU kicked off the first finals event of the evening taking first in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of seniors Doris Eichhorn and Gracie Redding, sophomore Petra Halmai and sophomore Rebecca Moynihan combined for a swim of 1:38.71, a new season-best mark. Eichhorn (50 back), Halmai (50 breast), and Moynihan (50 free) all produced lifetime best swims.
Halmai's trial time in the 200 breast (2:11.54) became the second-fastest time in program history, just missing the record by three-tenths of a second.
In the diving portion, sophomore Megan Wakefield claimed first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 284. The score gives Wakefield a season-best mark. In the final event of the evening, the 800 free relay, the Eagless were not able to score due to a disqualification.
The CCSA Championships will continue Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. with the 500-yard freestyle preliminaries. The event finals for day two will start at 6:00 p.m. (200 free relay, 3-meter dive, 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free.).

Clean Sweep Over Lake Sumter Extends SCF Softball's Winning Streak
The SCF softball team (12-1) finally finished where they started as they completed the suspended game from February 7 against Lake Sumter State College (8-13-1) winning by a final score of 7-2 and then going on to defeat LSSC 6-3 in the first game and 3-0 in the second game. With the win, the Manatees are now 23-2 against the Lakehawks as of 2012. The suspended game was continued at the SCF Softball Complex with SCF still the away team.
"Lake Sumter is a very good opponent with good speed and slappers, while their pitching was keeping us a little off balance from time-to-time, so they did a great job there," said head coach Mandy Scheurman. "We were able to get some key hits when we needed to get them and our pitching did a really good job pounding the zone today."*
Suspended Game:
Freshman Ashley Zientek earned her fourth win of the season after throwing a complete game, giving up both runs on three hits while walking three batters and striking out eight.
Sophomore Emily Murphy was credited with her second loss after a third of an inning. Murphy gave up six runs on four hits while walking one batter.
Freshman Ember Oglesby gave up one run on four hits while walking three and striking out two in 4.2 innings. Classmate Cissy Doolittle threw two scoreless innings, while giving up two hits.
Sophomore Madison Yoder was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while freshmen Madelyn Graham and Madi LoCastro each went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk. LoCastro also added an RBI.
Freshman Makayla Benavidez (1-for-4) and sophomore Cheyenne Nunez (0-for-2) each had two stolen bases.
Game One:
For game one, Schuerman sent Zientek back to the mound while LSSC head coach Jay Miller sent sophomore Allie Geier to counter.
The Lakehawks would take a 2-0 lead at the top of the first after two RBI singles off the bats of sophomores Ashlyn Allen and Mackenzie Reeves. Scheurman decided to make a change and send LoCastro to the mound, who was able to get all three outs with ease.
The Manatees managed to answer back in the bottom of the second. Beginning with lead-off single from LoCastro before moving to second from a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Haley McFadden and to third on a groundout from freshman Sabrina Long, sophomore Kyria Holcomb would send LoCastro home with a single to make it 2-1 LSSC. Freshman Nicci Palumbo would then tie the score at 2-2 after sending Holcomb home with an RBI single of her own. Classmate Lauren Bostwick would then send Palumbo home on a hard ground ball to give SCF a 3-2 lead.
While LoCastro continued putting zeros on Lake Sumter's scoreboard, the Manatees added another run to the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. After a lead-off single from Nunez before stealing second and third, freshman Kailey Christian would send her home with a sacrifice bunt to make it 4-2 SCF.
By the bottom of the sixth, the Manatees added their final runs of the game from a two run shot from Long. This was her second home run of the season.
At the top of the seventh, LoCastro was able to get the first two outs, but a two-out single by sophomore Taylor Turner, which was followed by a stolen base, put her in a little bit of a fix. The Lakehawks would cut the deficit by three after sophomore Jenna Curtis sent Turner home with a single, but that was all they could produce as Allen would strike out to end the game.
Zientek would earn a no-decision after throwing one inning while giving up two runs on four hits with one strikeout.
LoCastro would earn her second win of the season after throwing six innings while giving up one run on four hits, walking one batter and striking out four. LoCastro would also finish 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Geier would be credited with her second loss of the season after throwing four innings, giving up three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two.
Doolittle threw two innings and gave up three runs on three runs on three hits.
Long (2-for-3, home run and two RBI) and Palumbo (2-for-2, one RBI and one run) also finished with two hits each.
Nunez finished 1-for-3 with a run scored while adding two stolen bases.
Game Two:
For game two, Schuerman sent Christian to the mound while Miller would try to counter by sending sophomore Abbey Primavera to pitch.
While Christian breezed through the first inning with three strikeouts at the top of the first, in the bottom half, she drew a two-out walk and scored from a two-run shot off the bat of LoCastro that made it 2-0 SCF. This was LoCastro's fourth home run of the season.
Christian continued to breeze through the second and third inning while the Manatees their third run in the bottom of the fourth. After Nunez began with a lead-off single while advancing to second on a throwing error. After a single from Christian sent Nunez to third, the Manatees attempted a double steal as Nunez stole home and scored to make it 3-0 while Christian was caught stealing.
Despite that, Christian continued to do her job on the mound as she continued to add strikeouts in her name which included striking out the side in the fifth inning.
In the sixth, Christian started to struggle after giving up a lead-off single and Palumbo fielding error, but with a determined effort she was able to get out of the situation and breezed through the seventh with ease for the win. Christian earned her sixth win of the season after a two-hit shutout while striking out a season-high 11 batters while going 1-for-2 with a run scored
Primavera would be credited with her second loss of the season after six innings, giving up all three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out one.
LoCastro was the only Manatee with a multi-hit game as she finished 2-for-3 with the home run and two RBI.
While Nunez added another stolen base, freshman Lauren Bostwick added two stolen bases of her own as well as sophomore Megan Seeds.
"Defensively, we were very solid and picked up key two out hits when we needed it," said Schuerman. "Our overall team approach was very good."

The Manatees will head to neutral grounds as they travel to Longwood, Florida to compete in the two-day Seminole Tournament. The Manatees will play Tallahassee Community College (7-9) at 1:45 pm and St. Johns River State (6-8) at 3:45 pm on Saturday, February 23 and NJCAA Region 17 Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (9-7) at 9 am and NCAA Region 7 Chattanooga State Community College (6-1) at 11 am on Sunday, February 24.
"I just hope that our kind of mantra this year is get an inch better every day and that's really what we're trying to do," said Schuerman on the tournament. "Each day, we're trying to get an inch better and I think if we continue to do that, we should continue to win some good ballgames."

FGCU W. Golf: Amelia Island Collegiate Day Two Recap
Freshman Laura Edmonds battled tough weather conditions to shoot a final-round 75, capture first-place individually and lead the FGCU women's golf team to a second-place finish in the Amelia Island Collegiate on Tuesday.
The Eagles shot a 305 (+17) in the final round to finish at 905 (+41) over the three-round event at Amelia National Golf Club. Edmonds (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Cypress Bay HS), who is just a freshman, recorded a 219 (+3) for the tournament and won the event via a one-hole playoff with North Florida's Mindy Herrick.
It was the second top-two finish for Edmonds over four stroke-play tournaments so far in the Green and Blue, joining her second-place finish in the Johnie Imes Invitational on Oct. 3.
"I'm so very happy for Laura on her win today," FGCU head coach Sarah Trew said. "I️ don't think she's used to those conditions and her score today was very solid. In the playoff she did not show any signs of nerves, and I️ think this is the first of many wins for her."
With the result, FGCU produced its second-consecutive runner-up finish to open the spring and the team's fourth-straight top-5 finish dating back to the fall.
"I'm very pleased with our play today," Trew said. "Once we got to our ninth hole, it began to rain and wind gusts were around 30 mph. With the tough conditions, I️ am very proud of the way we grinded out the round. Scoring conditions were very difficult and we played well enough to move up to second place. I️ think this will give us confidence moving forward as we didn't have our best games but still did very well in the tournament."
North Florida (894, +30) won the team championship, while Marshall (907, +43) finished third. The Green and Blue also finished ahead of A-SUN rival Jacksonville (7th, 922, +58).
Outside of Edmonds, senior Madeline Marck-Sherk recorded a top-15 finish behind her 225 (+9). She overcame a +3 over her first five holes to birdie the ninth and 17th holes, as well as eagle the 15th. Sophomore Natalia Nassar tied Edmonds for the team's final-round low score with 75 en route to a 229 (+13) overall, which placed her in a tie for 25th.
Junior Ailsa Clark (232, +16) and senior Kelsy Holbert (238, +22) rounded out FGCU's lineup with ties for 30th and 53rd, respectively, among 86 golfers.

FGCU W. Golf: Amelia Island Collegiate Day One Recap
Freshman Laura Edmonds fired an even-par 144 through 36 holes of the Amelia Island Collegiate on Monday and is positioned in a tie for second-place individually, while the FGCU women's golf team sits fifth among 16 teams overall with a 600 (+24).
The Eagles will close out the event with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
"It's nice to see us in the mix near the top of the leaderboard after a bit of a marathon day," FGCU head coach Sarah Trew said. "Overall we played OK. I certainly don't think that we had our best games but it was nice to see us grind out each round. I think we lost some shots with a couple of course management errors that we can tweak before Tuesday."
Edmonds closed the opening round with birdies on three of the final four holes after shooting +2 on the front nine. She then earned three more birdies in the second round, including a pair over the 16th and 17th holes. Her even-par score is tied with four others for second place - just one shot behind Georgia State's Harmanprit Kaur for the individual lead.
"I'm very proud of Laura and her continuous good play," Trew said. "She's in a great position to contend for individual medalist Tuesday. She never gives up and always fights for every shot. I'm excited to see what happens in the final round."
Senior Madeline Marck-Sherk (75, +3) and Ailsa Clark (76, +4) also sat in the top 30 through the opening round. Then, in the second round, Natalia Nassar (76, +4) and Kelsy Holbert (77, +5) each shaved two strokes off their opening round score to help the Eagles shoot an even 300 in each round.
"This team is very capable of shooting low scores, and I don't think you can ever count us out," Trew said. "On Tuesday, we need to take better advantage of the par fives and a couple other birdie holes. If we do that and eliminate three-putts, we will put up a good round."

SCF Readies Three Games vs Lake Sumter
The SCF softball team (10-1) return home for their second home series at the SCF Softball Complex as they take on Lake Sumter State College (8-10-1) on Tuesday afternoon, February 19 at 4 and 6 pm.
The Manatees and the Lakehawks will resume a suspended game they had on Thursday, February 7 with the Manatees ahead 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on first for the LSSC.

The Manatees, who are ranked #4 in the NJCAA Region 8 Softball Coaches' Poll, finished their most recent road trips with sweeps over Eastern Florida State (6-4 and 4-3) and Miami Dade (9-2 and 12-2 (5)). Currently, the Manatees sit in second behind FSW, who are ranked #1 in the NJCAA Region 8 Softball Coaches' Poll and #3 in the NJCAA National Poll as of January 22.
Leading the way at the plate is freshman Madi LoCastro. LoCastro is batting .310 with three home runs and 12 RBI. On the road, LoCastro went 3-for-10 with two RBI and four walks. he quest for the FGCU swimming and diving program's (6-8, 2-1 CCSA) 10th overall league title begins tomorrow morning as the four-day meet will take place at the Liberty Natatorium from Feb. 20-23 hosted by Liberty.
"We are primed and ready to go!" head coach Dave Rollins said. "We have some people doing new events, which you don't typically see at a championship meet, but this hasn't been a typical season and we're not a typical team. I think we're going to see some very special performances this week and we're excited to celebrate every single one of them."
Season Highlights:
Entering the week with an overall 6-8 record, FGCU opened the 2018-19 season with arguably one of its toughest schedules in program history. The slate included a home-opener against current No. 8 Florida as the Eagles also competed in a road dual meet against Auburn, who is ranked No. 7. FGCU began the month of October with a select group competing at FIU in the in TYR Classic. Over the two-day stretch, the Green and Blue collected 478.5 points, to finish ahead of FIU (454.5) and Big 12 foe TCU (390) to take home the title.
Despite placing ninth out of 10 teams which featured a quartet of nationally ranked opponents, FGCU collected 119 points at the Georgia Tech Invite back in November. In that three-day period, the Eagles etched a numerous amount of personal best times, some of which are still season-best marks and top times in the CCSA.
FGCU capped off the months of December and January going 3-3 in dual meets, with its last full team competition coming back on Jan. 26 against FIU.

Senior Gracie Redding (Orlando, FL/FSU) took home the Eagles' sixth-straight Most Outstanding Female Swimmer of the Meet as she won the 50 and 100 free titles. In addition, coach Rollins repeated as the CCSA Women's Swimming Coach of the Year.
Prior to the 2014 championships when the Eagles finished second behind Liberty, FGCU won five-consecutive CCSA titles from 2009-13 – less than two years after the program's inception in the fall of 2007. Furthermore, after going 2-1 against conference opponents this season, the Green and Blue are now 39-2 all-time against CCSA foes.

There will be three scored finals for each individual event, as 27 individuals will score in a trio of finals consisting of nine swimmers.

Hosting Team Japan in an exhibition contest Saturday evening, the FGCU Softball Team came away with a 7-5 triumph over the No. 2 ranked team in the world.
"Our kids played as well toe-to-toe with the second best team in the world so I can't be more proud of them," head coach David Deiros said. "It was a great experience and the turnout we had was fantastic for this community to see that kind of softball being played."
Japan took a 2-0 advantage in the very first inning but not only did the Eagles respond quickly, but they also took the lead. After back-to-back singles from freshmen Reedy Davenport and McKenna Batterton, senior Kate Kelly brought in Davenport with a single. Shortly after, with Batterton and Kelly in scoring position, a knock up the middle from senior Racquel Fournet made it a 3-2 game.
Over the next two frames, Japan would scratch two runners across to make it 4-3 in their favor. The big inning for FGCU came in the bottom of the fifth as they registered four runs on three hits. A successful squeeze bunt from sophomore Ahnie Jumper brought home junior Diane Servideo, who reached on a single to left, then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

The Eagles utilized five pitchers, with sophomore Taylor Bauman, the starter who went two innings, followed by senior Riley Randolph throwing the third frame, junior Morgan White tossed innings four and five, sophomore Marissa Mesiemore worked the sixth inning with Hess throwing the seventh. Randolph and White each recorded one strikeout.
