SCF Readies Three Games vs Lake Sumter

The SCF softball team (10-1) return home for their second home series at the SCF Softball Complex as they take on Lake Sumter State College (8-10-1) on Tuesday afternoon, February 19 at 4 and 6 pm.

The Manatees and the Lakehawks will resume a suspended game they had on Thursday, February 7 with the Manatees ahead 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on first for the LSSC.

Last Time Out:
The Manatees, who are ranked #4 in the NJCAA Region 8 Softball Coaches' Poll, finished their most recent road trips with sweeps over Eastern Florida State (6-4 and 4-3) and Miami Dade (9-2 and 12-2 (5)). Currently, the Manatees sit in second behind FSW, who are ranked #1 in the NJCAA Region 8 Softball Coaches' Poll and #3 in the NJCAA National Poll as of January 22.

Leading the way at the plate is freshman Madi LoCastro. LoCastro is batting .310 with three home runs and 12 RBI. On the road, LoCastro went 3-for-10 with two RBI and four walks. On the mound, she is 1-0 with a 3.50 ERA and three strikeouts. In her last game, LoCastro threw a five inning complete game with two strikeouts.

Other players that contributed strongly at the plate include sophomores Cheyenne Nunez and Haley McFadden and freshmen Sabrina Long, Makayla Benavidez and Lauren Bostwick.

Nunez is batting .343 with 12 hits, 15 runs and seven stolen bases. Nunez finished 3-for-14 (.214) on the road with two RBI, six runs and three stolen bases. In fact, Nunez has 30 career stolen bases.

McFadden is batting .379 with 11 hits and five RBI. McFadden was 2-for-7 with two RBI against EFSC.

Long is batting .357 with 10 hits, a home run and 10 RBI. Long was 3-for-10 with the home run and three RBI against EFSC.

Benavidez leads the team with a .483 batting average (14-for-29) and finished 4-for-15 with an RBI against EFSC.

Like Nunez, Bostwick is also clutch in base-running despite batting .167, but does have six stolen bases. She went 1-for-7 on the road with four stolen bases and four runs.

Along with LoCastro on the mound, freshman Kailey Christian is 5-0 with a 2.45 ERA and 38 strikeouts while also batting .379 with 11 and 12 RBI. In her most recent game pitched, Christian threw three innings of relief in the 9-2 win over Miami Dade, giving up one run on three hits with four strikeouts. In her last start, Christian threw a complete game in the 6-4 win over Eastern Florida State. On the two road trips, Christian batted 6-for-14 (.429) with four doubles, a triple, five runs scored and six RBI.

Freshman Ashley Zientek is 3-1 with a 1.45 ERA and 14 strikeouts. In her last game, Zientek threw a complete game in the 4-3 win over Eastern Florida State giving up all three runs on four hits while walking three and striking out three

Scouting Lake Sumter:
The Lakehawks enter the series after splitting a series with Pasco-Hernando State College losing 5-1 in the first game before winning 10-1 in six innings in the second game.

At the plate, freshman Casey Allen leads the Lakehawks with a .362 batting average, 21 hits, two home runs and 13 RBI. Allen went 4-for-6 with a double and an RBI against Pasco-Hernando State College.

On the mound, sophomore Abbey Primavera is currently 4-2 with a 2.26 ERA. In her most recent game, Primavera threw three innings, giving up two runs on five hits in the loss to Pasco-Hernando State.

Series History (2012-present):
The Manatees are 20-2 overall series against the Lakehawks. Aside from the suspended game, the Manatees defeated Lake Sumter earlier in the season 5-2 in eight innings. The Lakehawks' last win was on February 16, 2017 where they defeated SCF 12-8.
