FGCU W. Golf: Amelia Island Collegiate Day Two Recap

Freshman Laura Edmonds battled tough weather conditions to shoot a final-round 75, capture first-place individually and lead the FGCU women's golf team to a second-place finish in the Amelia Island Collegiate on Tuesday.

The Eagles shot a 305 (+17) in the final round to finish at 905 (+41) over the three-round event at Amelia National Golf Club. Edmonds (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Cypress Bay HS), who is just a freshman, recorded a 219 (+3) for the tournament and won the event via a one-hole playoff with North Florida's Mindy Herrick.

It was the second top-two finish for Edmonds over four stroke-play tournaments so far in the Green and Blue, joining her second-place finish in the Johnie Imes Invitational on Oct. 3.

"I'm so very happy for Laura on her win today," FGCU head coach Sarah Trew said. "I️ don't think she's used to those conditions and her score today was very solid. In the playoff she did not show any signs of nerves, and I️ think this is the first of many wins for her."

With the result, FGCU produced its second-consecutive runner-up finish to open the spring and the team's fourth-straight top-5 finish dating back to the fall.

"I'm very pleased with our play today," Trew said. "Once we got to our ninth hole, it began to rain and wind gusts were around 30 mph. With the tough conditions, I️ am very proud of the way we grinded out the round. Scoring conditions were very difficult and we played well enough to move up to second place. I️ think this will give us confidence moving forward as we didn't have our best games but still did very well in the tournament."

North Florida (894, +30) won the team championship, while Marshall (907, +43) finished third. The Green and Blue also finished ahead of A-SUN rival Jacksonville (7th, 922, +58).

Outside of Edmonds, senior Madeline Marck-Sherk recorded a top-15 finish behind her 225 (+9). She overcame a +3 over her first five holes to birdie the ninth and 17th holes, as well as eagle the 15th. Sophomore Natalia Nassar tied Edmonds for the team's final-round low score with 75 en route to a 229 (+13) overall, which placed her in a tie for 25th.

Junior Ailsa Clark (232, +16) and senior Kelsy Holbert (238, +22) rounded out FGCU's lineup with ties for 30th and 53rd, respectively, among 86 golfers.

Quotes From Other Coaches:
UNF: "The team stepped up and worked hard to come out with the win," said head coach Joanne Berglund. "It is great to pick up where we left off last fall. After a four month layoff from tournament play, I am extremely proud of how we played. It was a great team effort across the board."

Georgia State: “Overall I am proud of the way our team competed all week,” head coach Cathy Mant said. “Today didn’t go as we wanted it to, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort. In tougher conditions, we just could not get the birdies to drop. However, a fourth-place finish in a solid 16 team field is a good way to start the spring and can give us some momentum moving forward.”

JU: "Despite all of the challenges today, I was proud of our team's resiliency today," said Head Coach Jennifer Borocz. "This was a good sign for us, and hopefully a springboard for next week's event at Kiawah."

Cincinnati: "Today was not the result we were looking for," said head coach Janet Carl. "The conditions were poor the last seven holes, but we seemed to let it slip away during that time. We need to learn that when conditions are poor, it is an opportunity to move ahead, instead of giving up strokes. We need to get home and get some work done before the next event."

WKU: "We had a tough tournament, and it's expected to be rusty," WKU head coach Adam Gary said. "We have a lot to work on to prepare for the rest of the semester. Megan had a solid week considering the tough windy conditions. We will learn from this and continue to improve as the season progresses."

Georgia Southern: "We had some good stretches of holes, but overall, we walked away with a keener sense of how much our short games need to improve to reach our goals," said head coach Emily Kuhfeld. "We are off and running again to Kiawah in a few days and are looking forward to another opportunity to compete."

Morehead State: "The team and I are thrilled for Bridget," said head coach Stephanie Barker. "To be in contention to win and finish in the top-five in such a high-quality event is really exciting. Bridget navigated her way through the course and varying conditions quite well and converted several of her approach shots."
