SCF Baseball Upsets #7 FSW

Bradenton, Fla - The SCF baseball team (28-20, 13-10 Suncoast) were able to pull off a big moment in conference play as they upset #7 Florida Southwestern (34-14, 19-3 Suncoast) 14-4 in eight innings via mercy rule.

"I'm very proud of the guys and how they played today," said head coach Tim Hill II. "It's always good to get a conference win no matter who it is. Our pitchers did a very good job and Miguel (Larreal), Kyle (Harbison) and Kevin (Karstetter) swung the bats well. We had some good at-bats throughout the game and kept scoring almost every inning."

"The team did great," said sophomore Kyle Harbison. "That was a huge team win for us that was completed with all hands on deck. (Christian) Gordon and Mikey (Murphy) did tremendous on the mound for us and I can't ask for more out of those guys."

"We played great overall baseball today with double digit hits and walks while our pitching was very well against a good offense," said freshman Michael Murphy. "Coach Batson coached a great game today as well."

Hill II was not at the game, so associate head coach Barry Batson took over for him. Batson would send sophomore Christian Gordon to the mound, while FSW head coach Ben Bizier went with sophomore Frank Elissalt.

"In my first at-bat, the guy (Elissalt) beat me pretty good with an inside fastball," said Harbison on hitting the home run. "So coming up for the second at-bat I knew, I wasn't going to let him beat me again with the fastball and I think it was safe to say I won that time."

Meanwhile, on the mound, Murphy, who took over the mound at the top of the second inning for Gordon, kept a sharp eye to keep the Manatees' lead up while strategizing on keeping the Buccaneers from scoring.

After a Larreal single, a Hall double and a Karstetter walk to load the bases, Larreal would score on a passed ball before Ayers drew a walk to reload the bases for Long. With one final look, the former Jacksonville University Dolphin would draw a walk and bring in Hall to win the game.

"It felt great to beat those guys, not only to win but to 10-run them at home on a Saturday," said Harbison. "That's what you live for as a college ball player. The big wins at home will always mean more."

"It felt great run-ruling a good team like that and taking care of business on our home field after a tough game yesterday," said Murphy.

Gordon would get a no-decision after throwing a scoreless inning with two walks and three strikeouts. Murphy would move to 2-0 after giving up two runs on five hits with three walks in four innings of relief.

"I felt good about my effort on the mound along with the rest of the staff," said Murphy on his game. "I kept it simple and got outs when we needed them."

We were able to win our four matches those two days and even if at some moment it was harder because of the heat or when we were tired, we were still able to get back to the game and finish it together and winning those games made us the happiest."

"It feels so good to be able to get the game-winner, especially with Lana," said Stoffel on playing with Sandanom for the game-winner. SCF Baseball Takes Second Series vs HCC

Bradenton, Fla - The SCF baseball team (27-19, 12-9 Suncoast) were able to take the second series over Hillsborough (16-26, 6-15 Suncoast) in the rubber match at Robert C. Wynn Field by a score of 11-6. With the win, the Manatees take the series lead 5-1.

"I thought the guys had a gutsy performance today, but they all did a good job to get the win" said head coach Tim Hill II. "Now we can turn our attention to a big series against FSW."

Hill sent sophomore Christian Gordon to the mound, while HCC head coach Raydon Leaton went with sophomore Murphy Bostick to counter.

The Manatees would strike first in the bottom of the first beginning with a leadoff infield single from sophomore Miguel Larreal. After freshman Tayden Hall hit a single of his own, sophomore Kevin Karstetter would send a single to center to bring in Larreal for the first run of the game. After sophomore Owen Ayers moved Hall to third and Karstetter stole second to move into scoring position, sophomore Harrison Long would send a single to center to bring in Hall. After sophomore Brandon Fields would drew a walk to load the bases, classmate Kyle Harbison drew a walk to bring in Karstetter. This would set up a chance for sophomore Jake Jackson at the plate. On an 0-1 count, the upcoming Liberty University transfer would send a shot to center for a grand slam for his second of the season, his first collegiate grand slam, to give the Manatees a 7-0 lead. It signaled the end for Murphy as Leaton would send freshman Chase Jackson to finish the inning.

“It felt good,” said Jackson on his first grand slam. “I was just happy I could do something to help the team win.”

Hill would pull Gordon at the top of the second and send sophomore Nick Cosentino to get a scoreless second.

At the top of the third, Hill would make another pitching change and send freshman Ryan Sediuk to the mound. After the pitching change, the Hawks would get their first runs on the board thanks to a two-run homer by freshman Jordan Sanchez for his third of the season.

In the bottom half of the third, the Manatees would add on to their lead. After a leadoff single by Fields, Harbison would send a triple to right to bring in Fields. After Jackson drew a walk, Larreal would send a single to center to bring in Harbison. In the bottom of the fourth, Ayers would then send a solo homer to right for his 13th of the season.

"I have been slowing the game down for myself at the plate and was looking to do damage," said Ayers on his home run. "I saw the pitcher miss a spot and leave it over the plate and I was able to put my best swing on."

The Hawks would cut the Manatees lead in half at the top of the sixth after a leadoff solo home run from sophomore Dillon Besnier for his seventh of the season, a RBI single by freshman Ty Bitman and Sanchez getting hit by a pitch to bring in Bitman with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Manatees would add their final run of the game after Jackson hit an RBI groundout to bring in Fields to make it 11-5 SCF.

The Hawks would add their final run of the game after a leadoff homer by sophomore Milton Cuyler for his first of the season, but it was all the Hawks could produce as the Manatees took the series.

"I thought it was a good team win tonight," said Jackson. "The boys hung in there and we got it done. It was a huge win for us. It felt good and we needed to take the series and we successfully did today."

"The team did well overall," said Ayers. "The pitching kept the other team quiet for most of the game while our hitters did very well off the HCC pitching with a seven spot in the first.  Taking that second series was huge for us as we are in a tight race for the playoffs."

Gordon would get a no-decision after throwing a scoreless inning with two walks.

Stefiuk would earn his third win of the season after giving up five runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in five innings of relief. He is now 3-3 on the year.

"Ryan didn't have his best stuff today," said Hill on Stefiuk. "But he worked through it and did a good job."

Cosentino threw one scoreless inning of relief, while freshman Michael Ojeda gave up one run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning and freshman Gavin Adams threw one and a third scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts.

"Gavin was terrific at the end of the game," said Hill on Adams.

Murphy Bostick would fall to 3-5 after giving up seven runs on five hits with three walks in one third of an inning. Jackson gave up four runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six and two-third innings of relief, while sophomore Josh Bostick threw one scoreless inning of relief with one walk and two strikeouts.

Jackson was the hero of the offensive game as he went 2-for-3 with a home run, five RBI and a walk.

"Jake had a good night," said Hill on Jackson. "He is starting to swing the bat better like we know he's capable of doing."

Larreal and Fields both had two hits each. Larreal (2-for-4) added one run and one RBI, while Fields (2-for-3) added three runs, a walk and a stolen base. Harbison finished 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run and a walk.

Karstetter (1-for-3, one RBI, two walks, one run and a stolen base), Hall (1-for-5, one run), Long (1-for-4, one RBI and one run) and Ayers (1-for-5, one home run) had the remaining four hits in the game.

SCF BVB Sweeps as Conference Champs

Lakewood Ranch, Fla - The SCF beach volleyball team (10-7, 7-1 Region 8) closed out the 2022 regular season with a sweep as they defeated Palm Beach State (3-4, 3-2 Region 8) 4-1 and Lake Sumter State (2-9, 0-6 Region 8) 3-2 at the UMR Sports Complex in Lakewood Ranch. Originally, the Manatees were scheduled to face St. John's River State at 3 pm, but it was switched due to Lake Sumter State's late arrival.

“The girls solidly did what they needed to do and got the job over the course of three matches in the last 24 hours,” said head coach Lynn Burnett. “They were prepped and ready for it since our time at the Mercer Bears Beach Bash when we won against Carson-Newman, which turned out to be a confidence booster for all of us in the tournament overall and helped bring us into the mindset to be here. They definitely played better this morning, even better than they did yesterday because it was the first match in two weeks, so not totally surprising with what they did with Palm Beach State, a team that was from all the other coaches that everyone is saying that it was between us and them that were sitting at the top of the leaderboard and to be them 4-1 was huge and I'm very proud of their efforts and even though we got a little tired and lazy with a lack of discipline in the last set and should have closed it against Lake Sumter 5-0, there are some things we can learn and grow on for the next couple of tournaments we're playing in. I'm very proud of this team for the culture, love and chemistry that they possessed and it has been amazing for the bars they have set for future seasons."

"I thought our team did so good all day yesterday and today," said sophomore Ana Broadhead. "We really managed in the wind well where there was an obvious good side and bad side of the court, so to speak, and our whole team did a good job winning on the good side and managing the bad side and we killed it."

"I thought we started off strong in our first set and had very good ball control in the wind, especially since it was a really windy day," said sophomore Kayla David. "Just talking to my partner (Broadhead), we did really well with that, even when this is the first time we're playing with each other against theses teams, so overall we did really well."

SCF vs PBSC:
In the first matchup, David and sophomore Anna Chechelyntska would defeat the freshman duo of Angelina Botolino and Lola Vidamour at the #2 pair 25-23, 21-16 for the first points. The Panthers would respond back with a point of their own as the sophomore Giulia Rodrigues and freshman Shelby McGee would fall in three sets to the freshman duo of Rita Campos and Amy Young 21-11, 22-24, 11-15 at the #3 pair.

The Manatees would regain the lead as the French duo of sophomore Lison Stoffel and freshman Lana Sandanom would defeat freshmen Ashleigh Desmond and Natalie Faulkner 21-13, 21-15 at the #5 pair before Broadhead and freshman Yeva Serdiuk would defeat sophomore Ashlyn Banton and freshman Nina Vallesi with a 21-17 pair decision at the #1 pair for the winner. Sophomore Kaylee Forman and freshman Taryn Wright would finish the match in three sets over freshmen Dena Otte and Mady Koons at the #3 pair by a score of 16-21, 21-17, 16-14.

After the matchup between Lake Sumter and St. John's River State, Burnett introduced the seven sophomores in their final matches of the regular season: Rodrigues, Broadhead, Stoffel, Chechelyntska, David, Forman and Carolina Moffatt.

"It's bittersweet, but the realization also hasn't set in yet because it's going to take some time for it to set into my brain," said Burnett on her sophomores playing their last season game at home. "A ton of hard work and effort has gone into it for sure and I don't take it for granted."

"There is a lot of emotions going on," said Broadhead. "It's exciting to move on and play at next level, but it's also bittersweet because this was like home to us."

"I feel like this is not over yet because while we are moving on, it was still a good vibe overall and we are all really happy to play here," said David.

SCF vs LSSC:
It would be Chechelyntska and Serdiuk that would win the first match at the #2 spot as the Ukrainian duo defeated sophomores Isabaella Ospina and Carolina Marrero 21-13, 21-7 before Rodrigues and McGee won at the #4 spot by defeating sophomore Macey McGinnis and freshman Madison Heskett 21-13, 21-19.

After the extra match, David and Broadhead would seal the deal as they won at the #1 spot over sophomores Erin Ellis and Alyssa Guarino 21-12, 21-16.

"Our match was good," said Broadhead on pairing with David. "Going into it, we were unsure of how it was going to play out because we both play right side, so when I played left in the game, I think we did a good job passing and setting well and I think the offense took care of itself and our defense was strong."

Forman and Wright fell 11-21, 16-21 at the #3 spot to sophomore Faith Horgeshimer and freshman Kaylin McCann and Stoffel and Moffatt fell in three sets at the #5 spot to freshmen Cayla Colbert and Leslie Catlett 15-21, 21-19, 7-15.

Notes:
With the final three wins of the season and conference, the Manatees were officially the inaugural NJCAA Region 8 Regular Season Champions.

"What a privilege and an honor it is to coach this team for this administration and for the support that we have for the athletics department, for this sport specifically and for what their investing into for next year and I'm very grateful," said Burnett on the winning the regular season championship.

"It feels amazing, especially with it being my last year here and I wouldn't want to end it any better way than at home," said David. "It's so exciting and I know this program has a future ahead for sure."

"Today, we had to great team wins," said head coach Mandy Schueraman. "It feels good every time we play well and win. Game one, our was a little more solid than game two where we faltered a little. Sam (Hampton) and Remi (Hebert) pounded the zone really well, which help our success and Mya (Achenbach), Gracie (Mullett) and Rylee (Trice) all had exceptional days at the plate and it was the first day that we hit during the games how we hit in practice, so I was very happy with our offensive performance today."

"Today, we showed out as a team in every aspect hitting to fielding to pitching," said sophomore Samantha Hampton. "We were all on it all day. I think we finally showed that we are capable of taking two from any team."

"I felt like our team played great overall today," said freshman Rylee Trice. "Going into today, I knew both teams wanted to beat us and we were going to have to make plays and hit well."

Ayers' 10 for 10 Helps SCF Takes Series Over SPC Via Mercy Rule

Bradenton, Fla - The SCF baseball team (24-18, 9-8 Suncoast) did not stop their offensive onslaught towards St. Pete College (14-24, 4-16 Suncoast) as they won by a score of 26-5 via the seven-inning mercy rule at Robert C. Wynn Field. Game three will return back to Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater Friday night, April 8 at 6 pm.  Freshman Michael Murphy will be given the nod to start the first two innings.

"It was a really nice win tonight," said head coach Tim Hill II. "It was good to see our guys play well on our home field. I thought we were a little flat to start the game, but then the guys responded and swung the bats well. We were a little sloppy on defense and that gave St. Pete a couple of runs, but then everybody picked it up. It was also good to see Dillon Cerrone, Owen Ayers and Brandon Fields swing a hot bat as of late."

Hill sent sophomore Jake Jackson for the first couple of innings, while SPC head coach Jeremy Graf went with freshman Manuel Meilan.

The Titans would get on the board first at the top of the first after an RBI groundout by sophomore Will Bruno, but in the bottom half, the Manatees would take the lead as Ayers would send a three-run blast to right-center for his 10th of the season to drive in sophomore Miguel Larreal and freshman Tayden Hall.

At the top of the second, the Titans retied the game to 3-3 after an RBI single by freshman Nick Garagozzo and classmate Logan Sanders scored on a double steal. At the top of the third, Hill would make a change on the mound as he sent freshman Ryan Stefiuk to the mound where he threw a scoreless third. In the bottom half, the Manatees would retake the lead as sophomore Brandon Fields would send a double to bring in Ayers for a 4-3 SCF lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Manatees extended their lead with 12 runs beginning with a leadoff single off the bat of sophomore Kyle Harbison. After freshman Gabe Wright drew a walk, Larreal would send a double to left and bring in Harbison. Following Larreal's double, Hall would send a single to right-center to bring in Wright and Larreal.

After sophomore Kevin Karstetter drew a walk and Ayers hit a single to load the bases, sophomore Harrison Long would send a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Hall before Fields belted a three-run shot to left for his seventh home run of the season. This would signal the end for Meilan as Graf would have sophomore Logan Scheu pitch in relief.

After the pitching change, Harbison, Larreal freshman and Lucas Ismali drew back-to-back-to-back walks while the Manatees batted around. Hall would then send a double to right-center and clear the bases before the Titan sent sophomore Tanner Goswick to the mound to replace Scheu. Karstetter would then hit an RBI double of his own to bring in Hall and Ayers brought in Karstetter with an RBI single to make it 16-3 SCF.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Manatees continued to pound runs on the board as Harbison would send a two-run blast to center for his third of the season to make it 18-3 SCF.

The Manatees would add the final touches in the bottom of the sixth beginning with a Karstetter leadoff single. After Ayers struck out, Hill would have freshman Dillon Cerrone come in to pinch hit for Long as he sent a two-run blast to right for his first collegiate home run. This would send freshman Austin Coultas to the mound. After Fields hit a single and freshman Gage Adams drew a walk, Harbison would send a single down the middle to bring in Fields. Wright would then get hit by a pitch to load the bases before Larreal drew a walk to bring in Adams. Hall would then send a single to right to bring in Harbison before Karstetter sent a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Wright and Cerrone hit a two-RBI double to bring in Larreal and Hall to make it 26-3.

The Titans would add their final two runs on the board at the top of the seventh as Sanders would send a two-run homer to center for his fourth of the season, but it was the Titans could produce as the Manatees pulled away with the mercy rule.

Jackson would get a no-decision after giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts in two innings. Stefiuk would move to 2-3 after giving up two runs on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in five innings of relief.

SCF Tennis Close Season with Win Over Warner

Bradenton, Fla - The #6 SCF tennis team (7-4, 2-4 Region 8) wrapped up the regular season at home as they shutout NAIA Warner University (2-12, 0-5 Sun) 9-0 at the SCF Tennis Complex.

"Today was awesome,"  said head coach Chloe Murphy. "It was fun to celebrate the sophomore before the match where we decorated the courts and give them gifts. It's been a special group where we have been through the ups and downs from the shortened COVID year to going to nationals last year and they come out and perform this year, which was the icing on the cake."

Beginning with doubles, the duo of sophomore Lou De Freitas Bonet and Sakurako Suzuki defeated the freshman duo of Riley Cook and Alizee Piette 8-1 at #3 doubles. After the sophomore duo of #17 Sarah Forsyth and Luna Mouton defeated sophomore Karen Alves and freshman Carla Schneider 8-1 at #3 doubles, the sophomore duo of #4 Kia Carvalho-Landell and Carlota Gascon Martinez defeated senior Danieris Santiago and freshman Camila Matos 8-3 at #1 doubles for a 3-0 SCF lead.

"I'm happy with my match with Sarah, which was better than yesterday," said Mouton. "We knew it was the last one at home and we just tried to enjoy it and do our best to win and I'm happy that we win."

As singles play commenced, the Manatees only needed two to win the entire matchup and end on a good note. Freshman Jessica Bustamante would defeat Alves 6-0, 6-1 at #6 singles before Suzuki landed the dagger against Schneider with a 6-0 pair decision at #5 singles. Bustamante would move up to 5-6 while Suzuki moved to 8-4.

Singles play continued for the remaining matches as Carvalho-Landell would defeat Cook with a 6-1 pair decision at #3 singles.

"The girl (Cook) was very strong and aggressive with her backhand," said Carvalho-Landel on her match. "One of things I had to do in the first set was keep the ball in the court and have her make mistakes. In the second set, we fought hard and I just waited for her to make the mistake. I'm just so happy that I won my match."

Following that, De Freitas would defeat Santiago 6-4, 6-1 at #2 singles.

"I thought I did ok," said De Freitas Bonet. "The first set was hard with my serving and a lot of my returns were out, but I found the solution in myself when I was down 4-3 and it was my serve and I just hit four in a row and I thought I should change something and it worked to help me win my last home match."

Forsyth would then defeat Piette 6-0, 6-1 at #5 singles before Gascon Martinez, who was forced to a third set, completed the sweep by defeating Matos 6-2, 7-5, 10-1 at #1 singles.

"I think we played well compared to our last match," said Forsyth. "We had a lot more energy and we came together as a team. We played well together knowing that it was our last match of the season. At the end of Carly's match, we supported her."

"I felt so supportive with my team by my side," said Gascon Martinez. "Obviously when I won the first set it was easy, but during the second set, I complicated myself in the second set and not play the same, which was worse but at the end of the day, I won my last home match of the season."

Notes:
The matchup for the Manatees was dubbed as 'sophomore day' for the five sophomores: De Freitas Bonet, Forsyth, Mouton, Carvalho-Landell and Gascon Martinez.

"They performed well in both singles and doubles," said Murphy on her sophomore day. "Courts two and three got the job quick while court one had to fight off being down 3-0 and won eight games. Most of the matches were pretty routine with the exception match one and Carly did a good job recomposing herself and finishing strong in the third set, so I couldn't be happier, especially being the last home match for the sophomores."

Region 8 Standings*:
1. #2 HCC (9-1, 6-0)^

Five Away:
For head coach Mandy Schuerman, she is only five wins away from surpassing Meredith Headings (240, 2007-14) for second all-time and 14 away from reaching 250 career wins as she earned her 235th and 236th win after sweeping HCC.

Upcoming Recruit:
For next season, one of the recruits joining the Manatees recently is Vanessa Neptune. Neptune, a catcher from New Port Richey, will join for the 2023 season after her completion of graduation from Mitchell High School.

A two-sport athlete, Neptune plays both basketball and softball. As a member of the Mustang girl's basketball team, she averaged 3.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. Her senior year was her best year as she averaged six points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game, while helping them to the semifinals of the FHSAA 6A District 9 Tournament. As far as softball, she is currently batting .286 with 10 hits, one home run and five this season.

Notably, she will follow the footsteps of her older sister Kassidy, a one-time member of the All-Suncoast First Team and Second Team for the Manatees before transferring to Farleigh Dickinson her junior year.
