SCF BVB Set for Nationals

Bradenton, Fla - After a successful season, the SCF beach volleyball team (10-7) will now set their sights on the next milestone: the National Championship. The Manatees will travel to Tavares to compete in the inaugural AVCA Two-Year College Championship at Hickory Point Beach Thursday and Friday, April 14-15. The Manatees will play Sandhills College (1-10) at 8 am and Lake Sumter (2-9) at 2 pm Thursday, April 14.

Last Time Out:

The Manatees are coming off of a sweep over Palm Beach State (4-1) and Lake Sumter State (3-2) this past Friday at the UMR Complex as a part of their 'sophomore day'. At the end of it, they became the inaugural NJCAA Region 8 Regular Season Champions. They also defeated St. John's River State (4-1) on Thursday.

AVCA Tournament Breakdown:

As far as the Manatees being in the tournament, five other teams will be joining them:

Lake Sumter (2-9, 1-6) (NJCAA Region 8)

St. John's River State (4-10, 1-3) (NJCAA Region 8)

Spartanburg Methodist (3-9) (NJCAA Region 10)

Sandhills (1-10) (NJCAA DIII Region 10)

Bryant and Stratton (0-2) (NJCAA DII Region 4)

The six teams will be divided in two pools of three teams and will play two pool matches on Tuesday, April 12. On Friday, all the teams will advance to championship bracket with the first place teams of pool A and pool B getting a first round bye to the semifinals. The second place team of the pool A bracket will face the third place team of the pool B bracket in another quarterfinal.

Aside from the winner and runner-up of the tournament, there will be a 3rd place and 5th place finish as well. After the conclusion of the championship, there will be a brief trophy ceremony with the #1 pairs from the championship match being honored and named as inaugural AVCA Two-Year College All-Americans.

SCF is the #1 seed overall throughout the entire tournament.

As far as the top pair go, the duo of sophomore Ana Broadhead and freshman Yeva Serdiuk and sophomores Kayla David and Anna Chechelyntska and lead the way as the #1 and #2 pairs. Broadhead and Serdiuk lead the way going 16-1 as a pair, while David and Chechelyntska follow going 13-3.

Scouting Sandhills Community College:

Sandhills Community College hails from Pinehurst, North Carolina and represents NJCAA DIII Region 10 (Carolina Junior College Conference). They are lead by head coach and associate athletic director Alicia Riggins, who enters her second season as head coach for the beach team (14th as head volleyball coach overall).

The Flyers are coming off of a double loss sweep against St. Andrews University by scores of 4-1 and 3-2. Their lone win was against Gaston College (5-0) on April 9.

Sophomore Cameron Lowe and freshman Kaitlyn Locklear have won the last five matches together at the #3 pair.

Scouting Lake Sumter:

The Lakehawks finished in last place in conference play after finishing the final matches 1-2 as they won 3-2 over St. John's River and lost 3-2 to SCF twice.
