Bradenton, Fla. - The SCF volleyball team (0-8, 0-7 Suncoast) are still on the search for their first win of the season as they return home to Hal Chasey Gymnasium. The Manatees will host a doubleheader as they welcome Polk State (2-8, 1-5 Suncoast) for Suncoast Conference action and RV Monroe College (20-3) Saturday, October 2. Match one vs Polk State will start at 11 am before facing Monroe at 4 pm.
Last Time Out:
The Manatees are coming off of a 3-0 loss on the road to #1 Florida Southwestern State. They face the Buccaneers earlier in the season at home, losing by a score of 3-1.
Freshman Anllel Caballero Fernandez and sophomore Jazmin Spencer still lead the path on offense. Fernandez currently has 85 kills, 57 digs, 11 aces and 16 blocks (six solo), while Spencer has 74 kills, seven aces and 46 digs. Against FSW, Fernandez had eight kills, three aces, three digs and four blocks, while Spencer had four kills, seven digs and a block.
Freshman Lana Sandanom has been a wild card factor for the team offensively as she has 26 kills and 13 digs. Sandanom had six kills and two digs against FSW.
Sophomores Kaylee Forman and Lison Stoffel continue to rotate on assists. Forman leads with 180 assists, while Stoffel has 41 assists and 26 digs. Against FSW, Forman was held to five assists and one dig, while Stoffel lead the match with 14 assists and three digs.
Defensively, aside from Caballero Fernandez, sophomore Adelene Jideofor leads with 20 blocks (nine solo) to go along with 29 kills, while Rodrigues leads with 82 digs. Jideofor had one kill and seven blocks against FSW, while Rodrigues had nine digs.
Keys to the Matches:
1. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate: The Manatees have to figure out a way to communicate to avoid costly attack errors and missed opportunities for scoring chances
2. Don't let guard down when holding a lead in all sets
3. Finish execution in each set
Scouting Polk State:
The Eagles are coming off of losses to #5 Miami Dade (3-0) and Indian River State (3-2) and are on a three-match losing streak.
Sophomores Morgan Madasz and Maria Munoz lead the offense with 31 and 30 kills respectively. Madasz also has 10 blocks in her name, while Munoz has 62 digs.
Freshman Valentina Bahamon leads with 15 blocks, while sophomore Elly McInerney has 55 assists.
Originally, the Manatees were scheduled to face the Eagles on September 18, but it was postponed after one of Polk State's coach tested positive for COVID-19.
Scouting Monroe:
Monroe College is located in New Rochelle, New York and are a member of the Mid-Hudson Conference (NJCAA Region XV). They are led by head coach Nephtali Delgado Reyes who enters his 10th season as head coach for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs enter the matchup on a 14-match winning streak and are currently receiving votes in the NJCAA Top 20 National Polls. Additionally, this is their second trip in Florida (first one was in Ft. Myers in the FSW Battle at the Beach Tournament where they went 1-3).
In their last matchup, they defeated Florida State College at Jacksonville 3-0 in Jacksonville this past Wednesday. Prior to facing SCF, the Mustangs will face Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne Friday night, October 1 at 6 pm and play #15 Hillsborough in Tampa Saturday morning before making the one hour trip to Bradenton to face the Manatees.
Freshmen Leanisse Solano and Yaliancis Flores lead the path for the Mustangs offensively with 207 (Solano) and 202 (Flores) kills respectively. Solano also has 157 digs in her name, while Flores adds 116 digs. In fact, Solano and Flores are two of the four players with at least 100 kills. The other two players are sophomore Alondra Ramos (126 kills) and freshman Alisha Callender (119 kills).
Likely using a double setter rotation, Callender (388 assists) and freshman Lyanis Rios (383 assists) lead the way in assists. Callender is also the Mustangs' leader in aces (75), while Rios follows with 51.
Defensively, freshman Valeria Trinidad leads the team with 43 blocks to go with 11 kills, while classmate Laura Panigua leads with 391 digs and 111 assists.
Series History:
Overall, the Manatees are 9-11 against the Eagles and 0-2 against the Mustangs.
