SCF Baseball Claims Rematch against Santa Fe

Gainesville, Fla - The SCF baseball team (6-5) got out of even and on the winning side of their record as they defeated Santa Fe (4-5) 3-2. With the win, the Manatees swept the series with the Saints and are now 5-3 overall.

For the game, head coach Tim Hill II sent sophomore Matt Gelorme to the mound, while Santa Fe head coach Johnny Wiggs went with freshman Robb Adams to respond back. For the first few innings, it was seemingly a pitcher’s duel between Gelorme and Adams, but Gelorme had most of the upper hand as he was working around a no-hitter through five innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Hill decided to pull Gelorme and send sophomore Jakob Mattos in for a relief appearance. At the top of the seventh, Adams would get pulled and was replaced by freshman Carson Pillsbury.

At the top of the eighth, the Manatees were finally able to get on the board first. After a lead-off by freshman Harry Long, classmate Kevin Karstetter would send a double to center and bring in the first run of the game. Sophomore Jack Anderson, who returned to the lineup after a hand injury from Pasco-Hernando, would then hit a single and steal second base and advance on a throwing error before Karstetter scored on the same error. Sophomore AJ Fritz would then hit a sacrifice fly to right and bring in Anderson for a 3-0 SCF lead.

In the bottom of ninth, with sophomore Clay Callahan on the mound, the Saints would get on the board after an RBI groundout by freshman Xavier Moronta and an RBI single by freshman Luke Marquis, but Callahan was able to shake off the runs and strikeout out his brother, classmate Zeb Marquis, for the final out to seal the win.

Both Gelorme and Adams would earn no decisions. Gelorme threw five scoreless innings of no-hit ball with three strikeouts, while Adam threw six scoreless innings, giving up four with two walks and four strikeouts. Mattos threw one and a third scoreless innings of relief giving up two hits and walking two batters.

Callahan would earn the win after giving up two runs on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts in two and two-thirds innings of relief. Callahan is now 1-1 on the season.

Pillsbury earned the loss for the Saints, putting him at 1-1 on the season, after giving up all three runs (two earned) on five hits with three strikeouts in three innings of relief.

Karstetter and Anderson each had two hits and a run scored. Karstetter added an RBI, while Anderson added a walk and a stolen base.

Long, sophomores Owen Ayers and Jacob Steinberg and freshmen Brayden Woodburn and Joel Perez had the remaining hits for the Manatees.

The Saints were held to only four hits.

This was win #285 for Hill II as he is only 15 away from reaching 300 career wins.

Up Next:

The Manatees return home to Wynn Field as they welcome #18 Central Florida (10-1) Wednesday night, February 10 at 5 pm. The Manatees played the Patriots earlier in the season losing in walk-off fashion at CCF.

Fans will still not be allowed in attendance for the game.
