5th Herd Heads for the JUCO Shootout

Bradenton, Fla - The SCF basketball team (8-4) will look at another challenging weekend, but this time it is on neutral grounds. The Manatees will travel to Daytona for the two-day Florida JUCO Shootout at the L. Gale Lemerand Health, Wellness and Community Education Center, hosted by #17 Daytona State College on Saturday and Sunday, December 10 and 11 at noon to take on Gulf Coast State (8-5) and Pensacola State (9-4).


Last Time Out:

The Manatees are coming off of a hard fought weekend at home after beating Polk State (79-69) and Gulf Coast State (105-94). Since after their loss to Polk State (11/8), the Manatees have went on a hot streak and won eight straight games so far. It is one of their best outings since during the 2019-20.

No Limit 3s:

Sophomore Skylar Wicks continues to be the leader of the offensive front for the Manatees as he is averaging 21.8 points (53.6 3-point percentage), 5.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.3 steals per game. In the last two games, Wicks had 11 points, three rebounds and three assists against Polk State before setting a new career-high offensively with 43 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals against Gulf Coast State.

The former Missouri State Bear was recently named the NJCAA Region 8 Player of the Week after his performances the last three games and is the first Manatee to receive the weekly award this season.

Classmates Cobey Harraway and Ronnail Tape have also been shooting the hot hand behind the arc. Harraway is averaging 15.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game, while Tape is averaging 7.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. In the last two games, Harraway lead the way against Polk State with 18 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steal before finishing with 11 points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal against Gulf Coast State, while Tape had 14 points and five rebounds and 12 points and four rebounds on his part of both games.


Pass Kings:

Freshman Malyk Rebetez and sophomore Isaiah 'Ziggy' Josue are the main players when it comes to passing. 

Rebetez is averaging 4.5 assists per game to go along with 3.3 points and 3.3 rebounds. He had five points, seven rebounds and 11 assists in the last two home games, which included a season-high eight assists against Gulf Coast State.

Josue is averaging 3.3 assists to go along with 8.3 points and three rebounds per game. He had five points, three rebounds and two assists against Polk State and 10 points and three assists against Gulf Coast State.


Welcome Back Meech:

Sophomore Ametri Moss has been playing significantly well off the bench for the Manatees after returning from a hand injury. Moss is averaging 6.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. Against Gulf Coast State, he put up a season-high 16 points, two rebounds and two assists.


Wild Game:

As far as the wild card players, freshmen Elijah 'Slim' Terry, Dresean Knight, Josh Ijeh and Kasheem Grady are the main ones.

Terry is averaging 6.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He had five points and eight rebounds the last two games.

Knight is averaging 2.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.

Ijeh, the primary rebounder, is averaging 6.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game.

While he was suspended for the game against Gulf Coast State, Grady is still averaging 5.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per game


Scouting Gulf Coast State:

The Commodores are coming off of facing SCF earlier in the season. Prior to playing SCF on Sunday, they are coming off of a loss to Florida Southwestern (95-89).

Six players are still averaging in double digit scoring. Sophomore Chase Forte is leading the team averaging 19.7 points, 6.2 assists and 3.1 steal per game. Forte, a transfer from UNC Asheville, is ranked #11 in the nation in assists per game. He had 33 points, four assists and seven steals in his last game.

Classmate Alex Matthews, a transfer from the University of Evansville, is averaging 15.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, while true sophomore Tay Hall is averaging 12.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Matthews had 10 points, four assists and two rebounds, while Hall had six points, eight rebounds and two steals.

Sophomores Josh Reid (12.8 ppg and 6.8 rpg), Kyle Murphy (12.7 ppg and 3.6 rpg) and Simeon German (10.3 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 2.1 bpg) also play key roles in the rotation.


Scouting Pensacola State:

The Pirates are coming off of defeating Gaston College in Niceville by a score of 73-68. They will play against Coastal Alabama - South on Wednesday, December 7 prior to playing in the JUCO Shootout.

Sophomore Zondrick Garrett leads the way for the Pirates. Garrett, a transfer from the University of South Alabama, is averaging 12.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Following along with Garrett in double-digit scoring are sophomores Jarvell Gainey (10.5 ppg and 2.3 apg) and freshmen Jalen Keago (10.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg and 2.2 apg), Roderick Coffey III (11.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg and 3.8 apg) and Henry Santiago (10.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg and 5.4 apg).

As far as rebounding, freshman Nieagell Sturkey is averaging seven rebounds per game.
