FGCU MBB @ NJIT Recap

The FGCU men's basketball team (8-15, 3-5 ASUN) dropped a tough 66-54 decision to NJIT (18-5, 6-2 ASUN) Wednesday night inside NJIT Wellness and Events Center.

The Eagles were led by a career performance from sophomore Troy Baxter Jr. went 8-for-16 from the field and tallied career highs in both points (21) and made 3-pointers (4). Senior Schadrac Casimir contributed seven points, seven rebounds and four assists, and junior Christian Carlyle finished 4-for-6 with eight points.

"I thought (NJIT) was better than us. They played with more energy, and I thought our lack of bodies bothered our legs tonight," FGCU coach Michael Fly said. "Credit goes to NJIT for being the better team in this one. We'll get back to Fort Myers, prepare for Jacksonville and continue to get better daily."

FGCU shot 48.9 percent (23-for-47) from the field, 29.2 percent (7-for-24) from behind the 3-point line and 25 percent (1-for-4) at the free-throw line. The Highlanders shot 44.6 percent (25-for-56) overall, 41.2 percent (7-for-17) from distance and 52.9 percent (9-for-17) at the stripe.

Zach Cooks led NJIT with 17 points, and San Antonio Brinson contributed 13.

Baxter Jr. connected on three 3-pointers early to give the Green and Blue an early 9-4 advantage, but both offenses were fairly stagnant in the opening half. The Highlanders held FGCU in check and gained a 23-16 lead with six minutes to play. They were able to remain on top and take a 30-26 lead into the halftime break.

The Eagles cut NJIT's advantage down to three early in the second stanza and had multiple chances to tie the contest, but they struggled to score as the home team slowly built a 50-39 lead midway through the period. FGCU locked down defensively but was unable to get into a rhythm on the other end as the Highlanders were able to fend off the visitors. NJIT's Donovan Greer hit a jumper at 6:09 to put his side on top 56-46, and team kept the lead in double figures the rest of the way.

The home team led in rebounding (35-26) and steals (9-6), but FGCU paced the evening in assists (13-7) and blocks (4-0).

Up Next:
The Eagles return home for a meeting with Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 in Alico Arena. The promotion will be a Blueout and will be a doubleheader with the FGCU women.

SCF Basketball Clips HCC at Home

The SCF basketball team (13-10, 4-3 Suncoast) broke out of their two-game losing skid as they defeated Hillsborough (12-12, 0-6 Suncoast) for the second time this season by a score of 104-92. With the win, the Manatees are 12-14 against the Hawks as of 2011.

"The first thing I told the guys was whether we're at home or away for any conference game, I don't care what the score is because I'm gonna take a win when we can get a win," said head coach Tom Parks. "Obviously, the best region in the country and every conference is loaded and now we got the #1 team (FSW) in the nation in our conference with HCC doing an unbelievable job rebuilding their program as well as Polk State and SPC. Our conference is stacked and anytime we can get a win, we will take one and we're just grinding it out and at the end of the game, we had more points than them and that's what it came down to."

In the first half, it was mainly the defense from freshman D'Moi Hodge that led the first half as the Manatees were up by as much as 18 points before ending the first half 49-35.

In the second half, the Hawks tried to keep up with the Manatees predominantly from sophomores Jeffrey Prophete and Jacorie Archie, but it did little effect on SCF as they manage to pull away with the win.

"In a lot of these wins, there's one or two guys that step up that haven't got their number called, the minutes that they didn't get or the role they're not happy about, but they continue to work and get shots outside of practice while busting their butts," said Parks. "The one guy that comes to mind is Chris (Scarborough)," Parks added on his players. "I love the kid. He's an unbelievable person, great student who works very hard in the classroom and on the court. There were several road trips where he has not played and when we come back from a road trip late at night, he and Max (Bell-Ramos) get in the gym and shoot for hours, which shows that his dedication to the program, belief in me to continue to keep working on his game and being ready for his number to be called. He's stepped up when we needed him to and I couldn't be more happy for him."

Freshman Christnoff Scarborough, who did not enter the game until the second half, finished with with 10 points and two rebounds.

"I think we did well and played really solid," said Scarborough on the team's performance. "We could've rebounded a little better, but overall we were solid. I got rebounds and did what I needed to do. I just try to stay positive even if I didn't play in the first half."

Along with Scarborough, four other Manatees reached double figures in scoring from Hodge, fellow freshman Isiah Dasher and sophomores Cyrus Barnes and DeAndre Osuigwe. Dasher and Hodge had a double-double each. Dasher lead the way with a game-high 25 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and a block, while Hodge also finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds. In fact, he was two steals shy of a triple-double as he added eight steals, two assists and a block.

"I felt like I could've played better defense and my rebounding helped my offense, but everyone can score on the team," said Dasher on his performance. "I just need to get better with my defense."

Barnes finished with 18 points (8-for-9 FG, 1-for-1 3PT, 3-for-3 FT), which included three monstrous dunks, four rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Osuigwe finished with 19 points (4-for-9 3PT) and eight assists.

"I felt like I did a solid job," said Osuigwe on his performance. "I just came out to do what I need to do to help get the win. My 3-point shot was really strong tonight, which was really good. When they (HCC) were trying to stop me, I decided to stop and give it to my teammates. It was an easy game today and I just let the game come to me."

Prophete and Archie were the leading scorers for the Hawks. Prophete finished with 21 points while Archie had a game-high 24 points.

Up Next:
The Manatees return to face FSW (22-1, 6-0 Suncoast) on the road again at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena. The Buccaneers are ranked #1 in the nation.

"FSW is very talented, but are probably not the most talented team in the nation, but they play really hard," said Parks on playing FSW. "Their defense is what makes them special. If you look at the other top 25 teams in the nation, there are a lot that can score from really talented players, but they don't play defense and that's what FSW does really well with length, athleticism, size and effort. We just got to move the ball more against them and play more as a team if we want a chance to win the game and be more aggressive on defense. We can't back down even if they are the  #1 team in the nation with all these big-time players, but we got to play our game and realize we lace their shoes up like we do and play on the same court in the same conference and should respect us. We'll continue to work, fight and at the end of the day, win or lose, regardless of what happens in any game, we just want to get better any every single day."

After talking about the performance against HCC, coach Parks gave me this heartfelt response on writing about the team:

"I just want to thank you Pat for doing this because I think it's unbelievable with your passion and the fact that you come and support us every game with your notebook writing stats and how serious you take this. It means a lot to our program and we really appreciate your support and writing about us on your blog. It really means a lot to us."

That's big for us to be able to get a win against a veteran team that got us at their place."

"It was another hard fought game and tough loss," said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. "Proud of how the guys continue to battle, compete and persevere. Just have to continue working to be able to get those key stops and make the simple plays when we need it. We will get back to work tomorrow and prepare to play Kennesaw State on Wednesday night."

Raining 3s vs UNF Recap

The FGCU women's basketball team (15-4, 6-0 A-SUN) took their first sweep of the season as they defeated UNF (7-11, 2-5 A-SUN) at the Alico Arena Sunday afternoon by a score of 80-48. With the win, the Eagles are now 24-3 against the Ospreys. In addition, FGCU is now 176-16 all-time against A-SUN teams, including a 114-4 record since 2011-12. In regular season play, they've won 19 of the past 20 against conference teams including its current 13-game streak. At home, they're 93-2 all-time against A-SUN teams and have won 86 of the past 87 in Alico Arena.

"I thought it was a really good performance," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "We got off to a slow start offensively, but our defense was excellent. So, even though we had a slow start, we were able to get a little bit of a lead early just because we were executing on the defensive side of the ball."

"We really struggled executing today. They really got into us physically and we didn't respond the way we needed to," said UNF head coach Darrick Gibbs. "Our turnovers led directly to points for them and you can't give a good team like FGCU easy opportunities."

Early on, redshirt junior Keri Jewett-Giles scored five straight and eight of the first 10 points for the Eagles, who combined with North Florida to shoot 1-for-11 to open the game. Defensively, though, they held the Ospreys scoreless for the game's first 7:49 before taking a 14-7 lead through one. The second quarter featured a pair of 3-point field goals from redshirt sophomore Chandler Ryan as FGCU took a 17-point lead midway through the game.

At the half, FGCU had more points from the 3-point line (18) than UNF did as a team (17), and they forced 12 turnovers, which led to a 12-0 advantage in points going the other way.

Junior Nasrin Ulel then opened the second half with a pair of 3-pointers as the Eagles shot 10-for-15 in the third quarter alone, including 6-for-9 from 3-point range, to outscore UNF 30-12 in the frame and take a 64-29 lead.

Overall, FGCU outscored UNF 28-5 in points off turnovers, including 27-0 through three quarters. They forced a total of 23 turnovers on 11 steals, and they're now giving up just 50.3 points per game over the past six contests.

"We've definitely improved dramatically on the defensive end," Smesko said. "To start the season, we were not very good. It started with a lot of communication errors, not getting back on defense and then we really didn't guard a lot with the right technique. We've spent some time on it. The players have put forth a great effort to improve on the defensive side of the ball, and we look like a much different team on that side of the ball than we did a month ago."

Jewett-Giles tallied a team-high 16 points with a season-high seven assists. Jewett-Giles is up to 750 points in her career.

Ryan added 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the 3-point line.

Ulel added 13 points. Ulel now has 722 points in the Green and Blue is 14th-most in the program's Division-I era, just 28 short of passing China Dow (749, 2016-18) for 13th.

Tytionia Adderly was the fourth player in double-figures with 10, along with a team-high seven rebounds. Adderly eclipsed 500 career points and now sits at 508, while her seven rebounds give her 711 in the Green and Blue, just 25 shy of moving past Whitney Knight (735, 2011-16) for second-most in program history.

With her one offensive rebound, Adderly now has 293 in her career, while with her six defensive rebounds, she tied Adrianne McNally (418, 2002-04) for fourth all-time.

Lisa Zderadicka added eight points and three assists. With her eight points, Zderadicka now has 966 points in her NCAA career. With her three assists, the "Empress of Assists" now has 324 in her career.

This was her first collegiate home run of her career.

The Manatees would then tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. After a lead-off walk drawn by freshman Lauren Bostwick and back-to-back sacrifice bunts from Nunez and Long, Holcomb would send Botswick home with an RBI single to make it 2-2.

After a scoreless top half of the sixth, the Manatees found the momentum they needed in the bottom half. After a one-out single from Parks, Zientek would clock a double to center and send Parks home and give the Manatees a 3-2 lead, which also signaled the end for Foster as Angus sent sophomore Shayne O'Connell to the mound.

After freshman Makayla Benavidez came in to pinch run for Zientek, Bostwick would then bring in Benavidez with an RBI double of her own to make it 4-2 SCF. Nunez would extended the lead further as she sent Bostwick home after reaching base on a fielding error before Long sent Nunez home with an RBI single to make it 6-2 SCF and the win.

Zientek earned the win after throw a complete game, giving up two unearned runs on four hits while striking out five. She also went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Foster would be credited with the loss after 5.1 innings. Foster gave up four runs on six hits while walking three batters and striking out one.

FGCU MBB @ Lipscomb Recap

The FGCU men's basketball team (7-14, 2-4 A-SUN) suffered a close 89-81 setback to A-SUN Conference favorite Lipscomb (15-4, 6-0 A-SUN) Thursday night in Allen Arena.

The Bisons had won their previous four games by an average of 21.5 points per game and had yet to yield 80 points to any A-SUN opponent this season.

"I am super proud of our effort tonight. That was as good of a competitive effort as we've had all year," FGCU coach Michael Fly said. "We respect the heck out of that team. (Lipscomb) threw in some 3-point shots late on a ball-fake and with multiple hands in their faces. I told our guys that if you can play like that against the league favorite on the road, then you can play with anybody. To be honest, I'm as encouraged as I've been after any game this year."

“I was worried about it for almost the whole game,” Lipscomb head coach Casey Alexander said. “You have to give them (FGCU) credit. They came in with a good plan and did a lot of really good things. They have a lot of talent and their guys played with a lot of confidence.”

Senior Dinero Mercurius led the Eagles with 17 points off the bench, reaching double figures for the first time in conference play. Classmate Schadrac Casimir poured in his usual 14, while sophomore Troy Baxter Jr. had 10, all in the second half.

The Eagles hung with the reigning champs and league-leading Bison for all 40 minutes, and even held a lead with less than three minutes to play. The home side was able to hang on in the end, using a late 14-2 run to avoid the upset bid.

FGCU actually outshot Lipscomb, finishing 28-for-59 (47.5 percent) from the field. The visitors also shot 44.4 percent (12-for-27) from behind the 3-point line and 65 percent (13-for-20) at the free-throw line. The Bison shot just 44.6 percent (29-for-65) overall, 44.8 percent (13-for-29) from deep and 78.3 percent (18-for-23) from the charity stripe.

A-SUN Preseason Player of the Year Garrison Mathews scored 31 with 10 rebounds to counter six turnovers, while Michael Buckland and Matt Rose each added 11.

The Bison scored the first five points of the game and enjoyed an initial 8-2 advantage, but a 10-0 run gave FGCU a 12-8 lead. Lipscomb quickly erased the deficit and found its rhythm to move on top 24-15, and the team continued to stay ahead 42-28 with two minutes left in the opening frame. The Eagles stayed within striking distance, however, by scoring seven unanswered to trail just 42-35 at the break.

FGCU never backed down and took its first lead of the second half at 56-55 at the under-12 media timeout. The lead changed hands 10 times total in the second half, with the final swing of momentum coming at the critical moment when the Bison were able to pull away late.

FGCU forced 18 Lipscomb turnovers and also led in blocks (7-0), steals (6-5), fast-break points (8-2) and bench production (32-27).

Up Next:
FGCU returns home for a contest against North Florida at 5 p.m. Jan. 27. The Sunday matinee will be a rematch of an earlier-season clash between the two programs in Jacksonville, Florida, that saw the Ospreys knock off the Eagles.

FGCU MBB @ Lipscomb Preview

The FGCU men's basketball team will next compete in a contest against A-SUN Conference favorite Lipscomb at 7:30 p.m. (EST) Jan. 24 in Nashville, Tennessee. The Eagles (7-13, 2-3 A-SUN) are coming off back-to-back league triumphs, while the Bisons (14-4, 5-0 A-SUN) have yet to drop a conference game this season. The contest will be a rematch of last season's A-SUN Championship title game, when LU knocked off FGCU in Alico Arena. Lipscomb is the top-rated team in the league with a current NET rating of No. 46.

Last Time Out:
FGCU won its second-straight ASUN Conference contest 87-65 over Stetson Jan. 21 inside Alico Arena. The Green and Blue took part in their Pinkout promotion, and the coaches all wore sneakers to help raise cancer awareness as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer program.

Playing in front of 3,321 fans on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, five Eagles scored in double figures for just the second time this season (FIU). Senior Schadrac Casimir led the way with a 21-point effort on the same day he was honored as the ASUN Player and Newcomer of the Week. Junior Christian Carlyle dropped 13, both sophomore Brian Thomas and true freshman Caleb Catto had a career-high 12 points, while classmate Zach Scott added 11.

FGCU shot 34-for-68 (50 percent) from the field, and the 34 made field goals were a new season high. The home team also shot 35.7 percent (10-for-28) from 3-point land and 75 percent (9-for-12) at the free-throw line.

Scouting Lipscomb:
The Bison enters as one of the top teams in the league. The reigning tournament champs and preseason favorites have won all five of their ASUN games so far this season. They have taken down the likes of North Florida, Jacksonville, Stetson, NJIT, and Kennesaw State. The Bisons also earned key non-conference triumphs over SMU, TCU, Navy and Middle Tennessee State.

LU is outscoring foes 84.7-68.4, and the team is led by preseason player of the year Garrison Mathews. He is tops on the team in scoring (18.5 ppg) and second in rebounding (5.2 rpg). Rob Marberry (16.4 ppg, 4.7 rpg) is second in scoring and third in rebounding, and Eli Pepper (7.4 ppg, 7.3 rpg) is the top rebounder.

Series History:
The Bison lead the all-time series by a 13-9 margin, which includes upsetting FGCU in the SUN Championship game last season. Lipscomb captured six of the first seven meetings, but the Eagles actually lead the series 8-7 since 2012.

SCF Basketball Clips Polk State in OT

The SCF basketball team (12-9, 3-1 Suncoast) fought tooth and nail in Suncoast play and were able to pull away with a nail-biting win over Polk State (10-11, 3-2 Suncoast) by a score of 87-85 in overtime. With the win, the Manatees are now 8-16 against the Eagles and their first overtime win this season.

"There was a lot of ups and downs, peaks and valleys and runs from both teams," said head coach Tom Parks. "It was kind of like who is gonna make our last run and the last defensive stance, and I think offensively and defensively we did that down the stretch to be able to force overtime. It's crazy how it happened, but it is and we talked about 'Alright, we get five more extra minutes, the crowd gets five more extra minutes and their moneys worth in our gym.' We had to come out strong the first four minutes of overtime and we did. We let it slip a little bit, but we came out really strong and without that first run, who knows what the outcome will be."

"I think anytime you go into overtime, especially on the road or at home, you did something right," said Parks on the overtime win. "I know a lot of people look at it in a negative way and rather play in regulation and so would I, however, overtime is something that occurs only a hand full of times."

"It was a good game," said freshman D'Moi Hodge. "We started off really slow and some of our starters were in foul trouble."

"It was a tough game," said redshirt sophomore Tre Alexandrea. "We just wanted to stay in tune and we really wanted this win. They beat us the first time during winter break, so we owed them one and we really wanted to establish that one early and we were gonna play hard. We're coming into February wanting to play our best basketball. We learned from our mistakes in overtime and the first two minutes are big and we wanted to jump on them first."

In the first two minutes, the Eagles were holding onto a 2-0 lead after a hook shot by freshman Bernat Vanaclocha until sophomore DeAndre Osuigwe gave the Manatees the lead with 3-pointer along with a Hodge layup. Another successful layup from Hodge gave the Manatees a 7-2 lead before Polk State head coach Brandon Giles called timeout.

After the timeout and two successful free throws made by sophomore Alsean Evans, Osuigwe would get two successful free throws of his own. Defense continued to help the Manatees on the scoreboard after several steals from Alexandrea and Hodge, a block by sophomore Joel Coffey and several rebounds on the offensive and defensive front to give the Manatees a 13-4 lead.

With the score then 17-6 after a dunk by Barnes and 13 minutes left, the Eagles then took matters into their own hands and pulled off a 6-0 run to cut the Manatees' lead to five until freshman Isiah Dasher brought the lead back by seven.

The Eagles would then get a big push from freshman Tekorian "TK" Smith. Smith, their original starter, would connect with a 3-pointer to cut the Manatees' lead to four while taking advantage of some charges and missed shots before freshman Marlon Suarez cut the deficit by two with two successful free throws before sophomore Miles Wilson brought the lead back to four with two successful free throws of his own.

With the score 23-19 still in favor of SCF, freshman Max Richards would re-extend the lead to seven with a 3-pointer of his own, but freshman Janiel Jafet "JJ" Romer Rosario would cut the deficit to four with a 3-pointer of his own. Smith would then cut the deficit to one after making one of two free throws.

With five minutes left, the Eagles would cut the deficit by one point yet again after a 3-point shot by sophomore Milz Tatum. With less than a minute left in the first half, Smith would score six straight points from two baskets and a free throw before the end of the first half with Polk State leading 43-41.

As the second half went underway, the Eagles began with a layup by Vanaclocha before Hodges drew a foul and hit two free throws, but then Evans shot a 3-pointer to extend the lead to five. Five minutes later, freshman Leighton Elliott-Sewell would hit a 3-pointer for a nine-point Polk, but Alexandrea would not let up after a jumpshot of his own. But as the Manatees tried to cut the deficit, the Eagles continued to extend their lead and the Manatees had to push twice as hard defensively with Alexandrea and Hodge taking the reins, despite Hodge being in foul trouble.

With the score 63-55 Polk State, the Manatees continued to fight with Alexandrea showing his defensive side before cutting the lead to five with a 3-pointer.

"Defensively and offensively, Tre (Alexandrea) really stepped it up," said Parks on Alexandrea. "It was good to see. Tre is not somebody who I recruited and did have the option of not coming back because he was involved in an interview process in terms of leaving and going elsewhere after meeting all the candidates, but when I got the job, he signed the next day and that really showed his faith in me."

"I did get on him hard during a timeout and he responded. He was saying 'Alright coach, I got you' and he just went out and he really started the dominoes falling for our team offensively. We weren't getting much offensively for a stretch and he made that change for us."

"Coach Parks told me to take a better shot," said Alexandrea on Parks' words. "I got fouled and he was mad about it, but it was all good."

The Manatees continued to pound Polk State defensively while trying to cut down the deficit. The Manatees then took advantage of technical foul made by Evans after hanging on the hoop too long making a putback dunk and set up Alexandrea to make one of two free throws to cut the Eagles lead to five before Smith brought it back to seven before Barnes cut it to four after a 3-pointer. Another Alexandrea jumpshot and an Osuigwe steal and pass leading to a Barnes layup cut Polk State's lead to three before a timeout with 7:13 left in the second half. After a charge by Smith and several other fouls by Evans and Wilson, Alexandrea would cut the lead to one with a jumpshot. With the score at 71-69, still in favor of Polk, an Evans foul put Wilson at the free throw line to make one of two free throws before the Eagles took the leads after free throws by Smith and Evans and made it 75-70.

With 1:30 left, the Manatees were finally able to tie the game from a big 3-pointer by Hodge. 14 seconds later after a foul by sophomore Alaowei Talent that sent Wilson to the line, Wilson would give the Manatees the lead after making one of two free throws before Smith brought back the Eagles lead by one. Hodge would bring the Manatees up by two after his second 3-pointer with 28 seconds left before Smith tied the game at 79-79 with 15 seconds left. Hodge would then try to go for the win with another 3-point attempt, but to no avail as the game would go into overtime.

"Coach (Parks) did have faith in me to make that shot," said Hodge on the tying 3-pointer. "And I told him that I will do it and then when I shot it and it went in, I kept myself going."

"I started off real bad in the beginning after missing so many open range mid-point shots, layups and threes," said Hodge on his slow start. "I kept getting down on myself, but I had to keep my head up for the team and keep pushing on the defensive end and that was a big help for the team."

At the start of overtime, both teams tried to get early shot opportunities but to no avail. 35 seconds in, Evans would foul out and be replaced by Suarez. This would send Barnes to the free throw line to make both free throws to give the Manatees the lead. A costly charge by Elliott-Sewell, a basket interference by Vanaclocha and several missed shots that led to a Hodge layup and Osuigwe making one of two free throws for a five-point Manatee lead before Osuigwe extended it to seven with a floater.

With 1:21 left in overtime, Hodge would foul out and be replaced by Dasher, while Vanaclocha missed both free throws.

"D'Moi is one of the best players in the country," said Parks on Hodge. "And it doesn't matter what level he's at. That kid is very special and I told the guys in the locker and said D'Moi is 0-for-19, I'm still gonna run a play with D'Moi to make the game-tying three. That's how much confidence I have in him and he's such an unbelievable person

A block by Barnes and a rebound by Alexandrea were put under pressure by Smith as he went for a successful and-one to cut the Manatees lead to four. After Dasher was fouled and made one of two free throws, Smith would cut the deficit to two points after his third 3-pointer of the game.

With 25 seconds left on the clock, the Eagles went for one more push to try and tie the game to avail, but were given one more try with five seconds left. Barnes would make the steal and give the Manatees the win.

"I felt good tonight," said Alexandrea on his performance. "Coach believed in me to keep shooting the ball and keep attacking defensively. It just felt good."

Offensively, Barnes led the team with 21 points (8-for-11 FG, 1-for-1 3PT, 4-for-5 FT) and six rebounds off the bench while Hodge and Alexandrea led the starters in double digit scoring. Hodge finished with 18 points (7-for-20 FG, 2-for-9 3PT, 2-for-2 FT), five rebounds and five steals, while Alexandrea finished with 16 points (6-for-11 FG, 1-for-2 3PT, 3-for-4 FT), four rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Aside from Hodge, Alexandrea and Barnes leading the way, Dasher and Osuigwe finished with nine points each. Dasher added five rebounds, while Osuigwe added four assists. Coffey finished with two points, two rebounds and a block.

For the players off the Manatees bench, Wilson finished behind Barnes with seven points and three rebounds while Richards finished with three points and two rebounds and freshman Remy Robert II finished with two points.

Smith led Polk State with game-high 31 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Elliott-Sewell finished 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman Nikc Merriweather had four points and a season-high 10 assists. Evans would finish the game with 13 points and six rebounds.

Raining 3 vs Lipscomb Recap

The FGCU women's basketball team (15-4, 5-0 A-SUN) continued their dominance in conference play as they defeated Lipscomb (2-16, 0-5 A-SUN) 82-40. With the win, the Eagles are now 24-0 against the Lady Bison.

"I really liked how we got out to a fast start," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "We had a 10-point lead pretty early. I like when we show up ready to go and have the type of intensity to be a really good team. We got contributions from a lot of players today, a lot of contributions off the bench from Alyssa (Blair) and Kerstie."

Junior Nasrin Ulel and redshirt junior Keri Jewett-Giles led the Eagles with 17 points each. Ulel added two rebounds and three assists while Jewett-Giles added five rebounds and a season-high six assists. Ulel scored 15 of her points in the first half on 5-for-9 shooting from long distance.

Redshirt sophomore Kerstie Phills (13) and redshirt senior Destiny Washington (10) joined the fun with Ulel and Jewett-Giles in scoring.

Redshirt senior Lisa Zderadicka (7) and Jewett-Giles (6) combined for 13 assists, and Washington led the team in rebounds with seven and a block. Sophomre Alyssa Blair also had nine points on 4-for-4 shooting off the bench.

Junior Tytionia Adderly became just the third player in program history to reach 700 career rebounds. Her second rebound in the game's opening minutes allowed her to join Sarah Hansen (887) and Whitney Knight (735). She finished with six over 17 minutes and is on pace to become the program's first to reach 1,000. Smesko ranks her as the best rebounder in program history. Adderly added two points and is three shy of reaching 500 career points.

"You call it a rebounding radius, where some kids will only get balls that come directly to them, but she'll get a ball she has no business getting," Smesko said. "It will be eight or nine feet away from her, and she'll just go get it. My first year, we had Robyn Swain. She was an excellent rebounder. She was 6-4 and was around the basket. She got more rebounds than Ty in a particular season, but we've never had anyone who's gone after the ball as well as Ty."

FGCU opened the game with seven straight points and led 14-2 following a steal and fast break layup from Zderadicka 4:20 into the game. Phills then scored four of the team's six points in the final two minutes as the Eagles opened up a 23-9 lead. The Green and Blue closed the first half with a 9-2 run and pushed the margin to 40 on a layup from Phills with one minute left in the third. They led by as many as 46 after back-to-back layups from Blair in the opening minute of the fourth. The Eagles held the Lady bison to single digits in the first three quarters.

The team's 26 assists is tied for the fifth-most against an A-SUN team in program history.

The Eagles are now 175-16 all-time against A-SUN teams in the regular season, including 113-4 since 2011-12. At home, they've won 85 of the past 86 against conference teams since Jan. 22, 2009 and are a dominant 92-2 in Alico Arena overall.

Zderadicka (958) and Washington (922) continue to approach 1,000 points in their NCAA careers.

The Lady Bison were led in scoring by sophomore Taylor Clark and freshman Jane Deason as they finished with 11 points each while redshirt junior Anna Hammaker led the team with seven rebounds.

The Eagles are coming off of a three-game road trip where they defeated A-SUN newcomer North Alabama (68-52), UNF (105-66) and Kennesaw (69-46).

Offensively, junior Nasrin Ulel and redshirt junior Keri Jewett-Giles lead the way.

Although being held to three points and two rebounds against Kennesaw, Ulel is averaging 14.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. Ulel has 692 points in her career and has sits 17th all-time after passing DyTiesha Dunson (673, 2012-16), Robyn Swain (675, 2002-04) and Delia De La Torre (683, 2006-08). Ulel will have two more upcoming milestones in sight: becoming the 17th player to reach 700 career points and surpass Andrea Clarke (726, 2003-05) for 16th all-time.

Jewett-Giles is averaging 12.6 points and 2.6 assists per game. Jewett-Giles was held to five points and two assists.

The Empress of Assists:
Now earning the title of "Empress of Assists" is redshirt senior Lisa Zderadicka. Zderadicka is averaging 9.7 points and 3.7 assists per game. Against UNA, Zderadicka had 14 points and five assists, against UNF, she earned something that she never had, even at Houston Baptist: her first collegiate double-double of 15 points and 10 assists and against Kennesaw she had 15 points and three assists. Zderadicka's 10 assists against UNF was a career-high for her and currently has 314 career assists, including the 152 assists with Houston Baptist. Zderadicka became the fourth player to record double-digit assists against an A-SUN opponent as her 10 assists tied with Brittany Kennedy (12), associate head coach Chelsea Banbury (10) and Shannon Murphy (10 twice) for the fifth most in a single game.

The Rebound Queens:
As far as rebounding, leading the way for the Eagles in the category are junior Tytionia Adderly and redshirt senior Destiny Washington.

Adderly is averaging 5.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Adderly had eight points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal against UNA, five points and 11 rebounds (two offensive, nine defensive) against UNF and nine points and 13 rebounds (nine offensive, four defensive) against Kennesaw. Adderly has 289 career offensive rebounds and is 41 shy of passing Sarah Hansen (329, 2010-14) as the all-time leader while for defensive rebounds, she has 409 in her career as she passed Robyn Swain (404, 2002-14) for fifth all-time. In overall rebounds, Adderly has 698 (3rd all-time) and trails only Whitney Knight (735, 2nd all-time) and Sarah Hansen (887, all-time leader). In addition, Adderly is five points shy of reaching 500 career points.

Meanwhile, Washington is averaging 7.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. The Loyola Chicago/Ball State transfer had two straight double-doubles against UNA (20 points and 11 rebounds) and UNF (10 points and 10 rebounds) before . As a result, Washington was named A-SUN Newcomer of the Week for the second straight time.

"Des has just been playing better and better," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "She is starting to see her opportunities to make plays, and she is making the most of them."

She Got Smarts:
Redshirt sophomore Chandler Ryan continues to "make it rain" inside the classroom (no pun intended). Ryan, who is averaging 8.3 points per game, was named FGCU's Scholar-Athlete of the Month for the month of December. Ryan carries a 3.81 GPA and will graduate this semester with Magna Cum Laude honors after just three years.

"Chandler is an excellent student who takes her academics very seriously," said Smesko. "She's also performed well on the court this season."

Milestones:
The trio of Zderadicka, Washington and Wingate continue to trend toward 1,000 points in their NCAA careers (Zderadicka, 95; Washington, 912; Wingate, 752).

Another milestone for Washington is in rebounds. Washington currently has 593 career rebounds and is seven shy of reaching 600.

Scouting Lipscomb:
The Lady Bison enter Tuesday's matchup on a 14-game losing streak that dates back to Nov. 17. Their last win came against Alabama A&M (62-58) on Nov. 15. They actually started the season 2-1, but have struggled to replace reigning A-SUN player of the Year, Loren Cagle, who graduated after last season. The Lady Bison are coming off of a 80-67 loss to NJIT.

Sophomore Taylor Clark leads the team in points per game (11.1) while also averaging 4.6 rebounds per game. In the game against NJIT, Clark had 19 points and seven rebounds.

Not too far behind Clark offensively are junior Lauren Rau and freshman Jane Deason (7.4) (4.8).

Rau is averaging 8.9 points, 3.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Against NJIT, she had 27 points, four assists and three steals.

Deason is averaging 7.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Against NJIT, Deason had five points and nine rebounds.

Series History:
FGCU is 23-0 all-time against Lipscomb, including a pair of 100-point outings. The Eagles have never won by fewer than 11 points, which came on Jan. 29, 2011 in a 62-51 road win. Last series between both teams, the Eagles swept the Lady Bison at home (88-52) and on the road (68-54) before defeating Lipscomb in the A-SUN Conference Tournament Semifinals at FGCU (105-55).

FGCU MBB vs Stetson Recap

The FGCU men's basketball team (7-13, 2-3 A-SUN) earned their second straight in conference play as they beat Stetson (4-16, 0-5 A-SUN) 87-65 Monday night inside Alico Arena. With the win, the Eagles are now 20-7 against the Hatters.

"I was proud of our effort tonight. That's something we've talked about a lot the last couple of weeks," FGCU coach Michael Fly said. "We also talk about getting better daily, and I think we're starting to see that. We won a game on the road two nights ago, and we come home and continued to play well. We're not worried about what happened in the past or any games down the road, we're just trying to get better each day and take it one game at a time."

Playing in front of 3,321 fans on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, five Eagles finished the game in double digit scoring: redshirt senior Schadrac Casimir (21), junior Christian Carlyle (13), sophomore Brian Thomas (12) and freshmen Caleb Catto (12) and Zach Scott (11).

Casimir was 5-for-8 at the 3-point line and added five rebounds and four assists, Carlyle added four assists and two blocks, Thomas added seven rebounds while Cotto added four, and Scott added six rebounds. Thomas' 12 points were a career high.

"I feel great," said Thomas. "I've been hurt for a while and what looks year-by-year, but I think I finally found the rhythm I was looking for."

Four Hatters scored in double figures. Jalen Crutchfield, Ricardo Lynch and Keith Matthews led the Hatters with 11 points each. Abayomi Iyiola added 10 points and four rebounds.

FGCU shot 34-for-68 (50 percent) from the field, and the 34 made field goals were a new season high. The home team also shot 35.7 percent (10-for-28) from 3-point land and 75 percent (9-for-12) at the free-throw line. Stetson shot 37.1 percent (23-for-62) overall, 30.8 percent (8-for-26) from deep and 78.6 percent (11-for-14) from the charity stripe.

FGCU came out blistering in the opening half, as the Eagles carried a 55-30 advantage into the locker room. The Eagles went 21-for-35 (60 percent) in the opening stanza, which was just two shy of the school's D-I record for most field goals made in a first half.

Casimir had another great start after scoring 15 points in the opening five minutes against Kennesaw State two nights ago. He didn't quite reach that mark this time around, but he was able to account for nine points before the first media timeout. FGCU led 15-4 before the fans were able to settle into the game, and the home side extended its lead back out to 27-17 after Stetson closed the gap to within 17-13. The Hatters remained within striking distance at 39-30, but FGCU cranked out 16 unanswered points to close out the frame to take a commanding 25-point lead.

The Eagles blew the game wide open by scoring 19 of the first 21 points in the second half to go on top by 42. They coasted the rest of the way as the Hatters were unable to get any closer than the final 22-point margin.

FGCU led the night in assists (22-14), fewer turnovers (7-18), blocks (4-1), steals (11-4), points in the paint (42-24), and points off turnovers (25-10). The assist total was a season high, and the number of turnovers from the Eagles was the fewest in a game this year.

Up Next:
FGCU will carry its two-game win streak into a road showdown with league favorite Lipscomb. The Bisons (14-4, 5-0 A-SUN) are one of two remaining undefeated teams in league play, and the Eagles will try to knock them off at 7:30 p.m. EST Jan. 24 in Nashville, Tennessee.
