SCF SB Welcomes Out of State Rival Oakland CC

Bradenton, Fla - After a rough road trip, the SCF softball team (9-7) will look forward to returning home to the SCF Softball Field for the next six games. The Manatees will begin their six-game homestead by welcoming out-of-state rival Oakland Community College for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, February 26 at 1 and 3 pm.


Last Time Out:
The Manatees wrapped up a six-game road trip finishing 2-4. They first were swept by Santa Fe (6-3 and 7-6 (8)) in Gainesville. They would then travel to Longwood to compete in the Seminole State College of Florida Courtney Miller Invitational where they would their portion by defeating South Georgia State (8-6) and Indian River State (3-2) before being swept by Pasco-Hernando State (7-2 and 8-3) on the road.


The Manatees are currently ranked #10 in the NJCAA Region 8 Poll after their road trip.


Streaking Along:
Sophomores Mya Achenbach and Tori Copeland have both been on hitting streaks the last few games as they both are entering the doubleheader on a four-game hitting streak. Achenbach is batting .326 with 15 hits, a home run, five RBI and six stolen bases, while Copeland is batting .371 with 13 hits and a home run.

Power Game:
Freshman Chantel Schurr, Gabi Nicholson and Presley O'Kimosh have been the power game for the Manatees offense. Schurr, who was coming back from recent injury, is batting .341 with 13 hits, three home runs and 13 RBI, while Nicholson is batting .327 with 16 hits, 11 RBI and five stolen bases and O'Kimosh is batting .279 with 12 hits, a home run and eight RBI.


Pitching Along:
Sophomores Samantha Hampton and Gracie Mullett lead the path in the pitcher's circle. Hampton is currently 4-2 with a 3.15 ERA, 10 walks and 25 strikeouts, while Mullett is 3-4 with a 3.50 ERA, one save, 11 walks and 22 strikeouts.


Winning Coach Life:
For head coach Mandy Schuerman, she is on a path since her first season as head coach for the Manatees (2014). Currently, the former Florida Gator has 223 wins in her name and is third all-time in wins for the Manatees and needs 18 wins to surpass Meredith Michaels (née Headings: 2007-14) for second all-time. Additionally, Schuerman is 27 away from reaching 250 career wins as head coach.


Scouting Oakland CC:
This will be the season opener for Oakland Community College, who hail from Waterford, Michigan, represent NJCAA DII Region 12 (Michigan Community College Athletic Association) and are lead by head coach and athletic director Jamie Corona, who enters her 14th year as head coach.

The Lady Raiders finished last season 33-15 overall with a 22-6 in the MCCAA Eastern Standings. They would qualify and win the Great Lakes B Tournament to make it to the NJCAA DII Softball Championship where they would finish 1-2.

The Lady Raiders will bring back several returners including Ivy Velazquez, Sammy Michael, Alicia McConnell, and Claudia Feldpausch.

Velazquez returns for a third year after finishing last season batting .450 with a team-leading 77 hits, 13 home runs and 53 RBI. She was named a member of the MCCAA All-Eastern Conference First Team, the MCCAA All-Region Team and was one of three players to be named on the NJCAA DII All-American Third Team.

Michael lead the Lady Raiders offensively batting .397 with 60 hits, 21 home runs and 65 RBI. She was named a member of the All-MCCAA Eastern First Team.

McConnell was named a member of the All-MCCAA Eastern Second Team after finishing her freshman campaign batting .369 with eight home runs and 37 RBI.

Hang was named a member of the MCCAA All-Region Team, MCCAA Eastern All-Freshman Team and MCCAA Eastern All-First Team after finishing her freshman campaign batting ,424 with 64 hits, six home runs and 39 RBI.

Feldpausch finished her freshman campaign on the mound 9-3 with a 3.02 ERA, 30 walks and 58 strikeouts. She was named an MCCAA Honorable Mention.

Series History:
The Manatees have not face Oakland since the 2020 season before the pandemic. Overall, they are 15-1 against the Lady Raiders. The Lady Raiders lone win was against the Manatees was on February 26, 2019 at the SCF Softball Complex where they split the series by winning the first game 7-5 in extra innings.


Fun Facts:
SCF is 19-2 against teams from the Great Lakes (15-2 against teams from Michigan).
