FGCU M. Golf: Golfweek Program Challenge Recap- Day One

Junior Brent Fredericksen fired an opening-round 70 as the FGCU men's golf team shot a 286 (-2) and sits in 10th place at the Golfweek Program Championship at the True Blue Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

"We managed to survive the day," FGCU head coach Eric Booker said. "We need to drop more putts tomorrow and tighten up our wedge games. We need a tougher mental game for the next two days."

Fredericksen, a last addition to the lineup, birdied two of his first three holes after starting on the back nine. Despite a pair of bogies on the second and fifth holes, he produced two more birdies over the final four holes to finish at 2-under.

The other four members of the lineup for the Green and Blue finished one shot behind each other – senior Andrew Potter (71, 1-under), junior Doug Smith (72, E), sophomore Cole Castro (73, +1) and freshman Chase Bigham (74, +2).

Potter joined Fredericksen (T-21) in the top 30. The Aussie tallied four birdies, including two over his final three holes and finished tied for 30th.

After struggling with a double-bogey on the first hole, Smith bounced back with a birdie on the third and ninth holes on the final nine.

Castro highlighted the day with an eagle on a par-5 final hole and recorded an additional team-high five birdies. He opened play 4-under through the first five holes.

Bigham became the fourth Eagle to go under par on his final hole. He sits in a tie for 55th individually, while Castro is in a tie for 43rd place.

Campbell University shot a 269 (-19) to open up a seven-stroke lead in first place over Delaware (276, -12) and a nine-stroke lead over Gardner-Webb (278, -10) through one of three rounds.
