FGCU W. Golf: Golf Week Program Challenge Recap- Day One

Junior Ailsa Clark and senior Madeline Marck-Sherk each shot a 74 (+3) to lead the FGCU women's golf team to an opening-round 299 (+15), which places the Eagles fifth among 14 teams.

The Green and Blue sit 17 strokes off first-place Old Dominion (282), although they're just three shy of third-place Presbyterian. The final two rounds will take place Monday and Tuesday at Caledonia Golf and Fish Club.

"It was nice to get a sub-300 round under our belts in the season opener," FGCU head coach Sarah Trew said. "With that said, we can also clean up a lot of shots we gave away today. We played the par 5's at +8, and that is very uncharacteristic of us. We normally take advantage of those holes, and I think we just need to take a smarter approach tomorrow. I saw a lot of positives that we can build on from today."

As Trew mentioned, the Eagles had a few hiccups on par-5 holes. There were two double bogeys on the 10th hole and a pair of bogeys on the second and 15th holes. On the positive side, Marck-Sherk birdied two of the four par-5's.

Clark joined grad student Lexie Flerlage as one of two Eagles without a double bogey. After shooting a +3 on the front nine, she recovered and sank a trio of birdies over a seven-hole stretch on the back nine, two of which came on par-3's. Clark sits in a tie for 12th place along with Marck-Sherk.

Flerlage, who made her debut in the Green and Blue after arriving at FGCU as a graduate transfer from Florida State in the summer, is in a tie for 21st place after finishing with a 75 (+4). She birdied the fourth and 13th holes and finished a consistent +2 in each half of the round.

Seniors Jean Tyrrell and Kelsy Holbert rounded out the lineup for the Eagles. Holbert had a 76 (+5), which is good for a 27th place tie while Tyrrell is in a 52nd-place tie after an 80 (+9).
