FGCU W. Golf: Lady Furman Invitational Recap- Day Three

The FGCU women's golf team fired a program-record final-round 289 to produce a ninth-place finish at the 16-team Lady Paladin Invitational hosted by Furman University on Sunday.

"Today was an awesome day for us across the board," FGCU head coach Sarah Trew said. "Everyone played solid and contributed big time. We only had a four shot difference from our low round and our drop scores, which is very impressive. I think this is definitely something we can build off. If we set our minds to it with some hard work, this is something we can do on a regular basis."

The Green and Blue trimmed 15 strokes off their second-round score and were led by a 2-under 70 from senior Madeline Marck-Sherk. Following that, fellow senior Kelsy Holbert, sophomore Natalia Nassar and freshman Laura Edmonds each shot a 1-over 73, while junior Kate Williamson checked with a 2-over 74. The team's 289 score topped the previous program record of 290.

"We started off hot and had a few bumps in the middle of our round, but finished nicely," Trew said. "I am very proud of Natalia. She had a penalty on No. 17 that could have derailed her, but she ended up shooting 2-under on her remaining holes. Madeline played very solid for us and had her best round of the year. Kelsy, Laura and Kate had good rounds, as well."

Nassar suffered back-to-back bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes, but birdied three of the next six holes to finish 3-under over her final nine.

Marck-Sherk started 4-under over the first nine holes before cruising to a season-best 2-under 70, which matched her career-low.

Holbert birdied the first and 15th holes to finish with a team-low 221 (+5), which was good for a 30th-place tie, while Nassar and Marck-Sherk tied for 35th and 43rd, respectively.

Williamson tied Marck-Sherk for the team-high in birdies with four to finish in a tie for 48th behind a 226 (+10).

Edmonds rounded out the lineup with a season-best 73 (+1) to finish at 228 (+12).

Overall, seven strokes separated Holbert and Edmonds in the lineup for the Eagles, who tallied 15 birdies overall in the final round.

The Eagles will be back in action Oct. 1-3 in the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo. before closing out the fall season Oct. 21-23 in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. at the 41st Annual Pat Bradley Invitational.
