FGCU W. Golf: GolfWeek Program Challenge Preview

The FGCU women's golf team will open its fall season with the three-day Golfweek Program Challenge. Action gets underway Sunday at the par-71, 6,042-yard Caledonia Golf & Fish Club.

The event will also feature the FGCU men's golf team, and the unique tournament is comprised of the men's and women's teams from 14 different schools competing with the scores from both squads added together from the three-day, 54-hole stroke play event to determine the Golfweek Program Challenge champion.

"We didn't get to compete in this event last year because of Hurricane Irma so we are even more hungry this year," FGCU head coach Sarah Trew said. "It is a special event because we get to compete alongside the men's team. No other event is like this, so we are thrilled to be able to be able to play in this tournament. It is a great way to kick off the year and hopefully get to spend some more time with our counterparts."

Trew will be utilizing the following lineup:
Junior Ailsa Clark
Senior Madeline Marck-Sherk
Senior Kelsy Holbert
Senior Jean Tyrrell
Grad student Lexie Flerlage

With that lineup, Eagles fans will see some new faces mixed with some familiar ones.

Clark is entering her junior season after improving her stroke average by 0.90 from her freshman campaign. Last year, she reached the program's top 30 in four single-season categories – stroke average, par-or-better rounds, birdies and par-3 scoring.

Marck-Sherk has a pair of top 10 finishes at the A-SUN Championship entering her senior campaign, and she is one of just four in program history with that many – joining Briana Carlson (3), Megan Blonien and Mei Khuan Yong. She will be looking to become one of only 24 golfers in A-SUN history with three.

Holbert is another familiar face as the senior played in a career-high 10 tournaments last year, resulting in a 77.52 average.

Tyrrell, a senior, competed in one event last year and has played in six total events through her career.

Flerlage is in her first year with the program as a graduate transfer from Florida State.

"This team is by far the deepest we have ever had and qualifying was very competitive," Trew said. "I really like where our games are at heading into the Golfweek event. Everyone played tournament golf this summer and came back ready to go."
