FGCU Beach Volleyball @ Jacksonville Recap

Sophomores Snowy Burnam and Kayla Whetstone (19-4) broke the program's single-season wins record as the FGCU beach volleyball team (14-9, 4-4 A-SUN A-SUN) concluded the regular season with a doubleheader sweep (5-0, 4-1) of Jacksonville (1-11, 0-8 A-SUN) on the road this afternoon. With the wins, the Eagles are now 11-7 against the Dolphins.

"Having played together for nearly two seasons, Snowy and Kayla's chemistry is as good as we have had," FGCU head coach Matt Botsford said. "It's not a surprise. They're doing what we expected them to do, and they're great teammates."

She sits just behind two of her teammates - seniors Karissa Rhoades (58) and Katherine Puisis (54) - in comprising the top three spots. In fact, junior Giovanna Borgiotti became the fifth player in program history to reach 40 career wins on Saturday and gives this year's team four of the top five on the list.

FGCU held Jacksonville to single-digit sets five times. The lone loss came at the No. 1 pair in the second match. Carroll and freshman Kirstine Garder (14-9) evened the match up with a 21-11 win in the second, but dropped a third-set heartbreaker, 21-19.

Meanwhile, the duo of Puisis and Rhoades (17-6), who matched their then-record win total from last year, became the first two-time 17-game winners in program history. Also the first three-time 15-game winners, the duo didn't allow more than 16 points in any of their four sets on Saturday. Rhoades is two victories shy of becoming the program's first-ever 60-game winner.

Sophomore Cortney VanLiew pushed her career-high win total to 13.

The Green and Blue, who have now won four consecutive matches, will await Sunday's A-SUN tournament at-large selections.
