FGCU MTEN vs Liberty Recap

The FGCU men's tennis team (11-8, 6-0 A-SUN) pulled away with another win in A-SUN play as they defeated Liberty (11-10, 5-1 A-SUN) 6-1. With the win, the Eagles are not only 2-0 against the Flames, but they have officially claimed a share of the A-SUN Regular Season Championship, earned the #1 seed and a first-round bye in the A-SUN Conference Tournament.

Furthermore, this was head coach CJ Weber's 91st win as head coach for the Eagles.

"I love this team and we're having a lot of fun right now," Weber said. "We won a big match today and it's fun to be able to celebrate that. I'm really proud of this team overall."

Beginning with doubles, the team of junior Marcelo Tebet and Juan Montes (7-1) to defeat the freshman duo of Ian Sturgill and Josh Wilson by a score of 6-4 at #2 doubles. The junior duo of  Felipe Ramirez and Feliksas Sakalauskas (9-3) defeated freshman Steve Mundt and Vince Salas 6-4 at #3 doubles to claim the point for the Eagles.

Heading in singles actions, Tebet (11-5) kicked into quick high gear as he defeated Sturgill 6-1, 6-0 at #4 singles before senior Javier Fernandez (11-4) followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Salas at #6 singles. This was Fernandez's 91st career win with the Eagles.

With the score 3-0 in favor of FGCU, senior Felipe Escobar (7-8) defeated junior Chase Burton 6-1, 6-4 to clinch the winning point at #3 singles.

The Eagles would finish the three remaining matches as Sakalauskas (11-7) defeated senior Eddie Gutierrez with a 6-4 pair decision at #5 singles while Ramirez (8-8) defeated Wilson in three sets by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 at #2 singles.

Montes (8-9) would be the only Eagle to fall as he fell 6-4, 2-6, 11-13 to sophomore Nicaise Muamba at #1 singles.

This is the third regular season championship for the men's tennis team. The Eagles claimed the title in 2015 and 2016. Depending on how both FGCU and Liberty finish the week, the Eagles have a chance to outright claim the regular season title.

Up Next:
The Eagles will compete at the FGCU Tennis Complex for the final time this season with a match against Kennesaw State at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. The team will honor its four seniors - Ezequiel Cerrini, Felipe Escobar, Javier Fernandez and Mateo Ruiz - between doubles and singles play.
