SCF Softball Returns for Doubleheader vs South Florida State

The SCF softball team (35-11, 10-2 Suncoast) return home for their final doubleheaders at the SCF Softball Complex. The Manatees welcome South Florida State (23-17, 3-9 Suncoast) on Thursday, April 4 at 5 and 7 pm.

Last Time Out:
The Manatees are coming off of a sweep over Hillsborough winning game one by a score of 8-4 in game one before winning game two by a score of 11-5. The Manatees claimed the first two games at home on March 12 where they won 6-1 in game one before winning 9-2 in game two.

Currently, the Manatees sit in second place in the Suncoast Conference behind #1 FSW (44-1, 11-1 Suncoast) while in the rankings, they have gained not just state looks, but also national looks this season.

In the NJCAA Region 8 Softball Coaches' Poll, the Manatees are ranked #5 behind Seminole State while in the national Top 20 last week, they received votes to be in the national polls before now being ranked #20 in the nation after Southern Idaho (NJCAA Region 18/Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC)) dropped out after splitting two games with Utah State Eastern.

Sophomore Sound-off:
For the doubleheader against SPC, it will be dubbed as sophomore night to honor Cheyenne Nunez, Megan Seeds, Sydney Parks, Haley McFadden, Kyria Holcomb, Madison Yoder and Nicci Palumbo.

The Squad:
The squad that leads the way for the Manatees are Nunez, McFadden, Holcomb and Seeds whild for the freshman group it is Lauren Bostwick, Sabrina "Sas" Long, Makayla Benavidez, Madelyn Graham, Madi LoCastro and Kailey Christian.

Nunez, the speedster on the team is batting .357 with 50 hits, 21 RBI and 29 stolen bases. Nunez was was 3-for-8 against HCC with three runs and a stolen base.

Announced on April 1, Nunez has committed to finish her softball career at USC Upstate with her two years of eligibility.

McFadden is batting .279 with 30 hits, a home run and 23 RBI. McFadden was 1-for-4 with a run scored against HCC.

Holcomb is batting .360 with a home run and 24 RBI. Against HCC, Holcomb finished 4-for-7 with a home run and five RBI, including four RBI in game two.

Seeds has increased in her batting role as she is now batting .423 with 20 hits, a home run, 13 RBI and eight stolen bases while going 2-2 with a 4.20 ERA and 17 strikeouts. In the series against HCC, Seeds went 4-for-8 with two runs.

Despite going 0-for-7 against HCC, Bostwick is still batting .243 with 16 RBI and 19 stolen bases.

Proving effective on the field, Long has a .804 fielding percentage while batting .341 with two home runs and 33 RBI. Long was 1-for-5 with three runs scored against HCC.

LoCastro is 7-2 with a 1.98 ERA and 41 strikeouts on the mound while batting .323 with five home runs and 22 RBI at the plate. LoCastro threw 2.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts in the second game against HCC.

Benavidez is batting .359 with 32 hits, six RBI, 21 runs scored and nine stolen bases. Benavidez was 1-for-5 against HCC.

After returning to the lineup after missing five straight games from a concussion, Graham brought back her dominance against HCC. Graham is batting .338 with 25 hits, four home runs and 25 RBI. Graham had one of her best games since March 4 against Kalamazoo Valley as she went 3-for-5 with a grand slam and eight RBI.

Like LoCastro, Christian also continues her role on the mound as well as the plate with consistency. Christian is 18-2 with a 1.66 ERA and 163 strikeouts while batting .339 with 39 hits, a home run and 29 RBI. Christian's 18 wins and strikeout total are the third most in the FCSAA. Christian threw her 14th complete game in the win over HCC while striking out two batters in game one of the series while going 3-for- with two RBI overall.

Scouting SFSC:
The Panthers are coming off of a split against Polk State winning 4-3 in game one before losing 4-3 in game two and winning the entire series 3-1. The Panthers sit in fifth place in the Suncoast.

Freshman Jane'a Mobley leads the team at the plate with a .375 batting average, seven home runs and 37 RBI. Mobley was 2-for-8 with a double against Polk State.

Meanwhile, the duo of freshman Baylee Haggard and sophomore Shellby Young combine for 20 of the team's 23 wins. 

Haggard comes in at 10-9 with a 3.11 ERA and 73 strikeouts. In the last five games, Haggard was 0-5 with a 7.71 ERA and 15 strikeouts. The Naples native has not won a game since March 12 at Polk State. In her last game, Haggard threw a complete game in the 4-3 loss to Polk State.

Meanwhile, Young is 11-5 with a 1.67 ERA and 47 strikeouts. Young won her most recent game in the split against Polk State with a complete game and three strikeouts.


Series History (2012-present):
As of 2012, the Manatees are 26-5 against the Panthers which includes the first doubleheader from March 14 where the Manatees won 8-6 in game one and 3-1 in game two. The Panthers last win over SCF was on March 16, 2016 where they won 4-3 as part of a split series.

Against the Titans, the Manatees are 18-14. includes the first doubleheader on March 28 where the Manatees won 6-3 in game one and 10-5 in game two.
