The FGCU women's tennis team (8-8, 3-2 A-SUN) played in reverse at the UNA Varsity Tennis Courts as they defeated A-SUN newcomer North Alabama (5-14, 0-4 A-SUN) 6-1.
"North Alabama battled hard today against us," said head coach Courtney Vernon. "With the match being moved to today, the ladies got off the plane, warmed up for about 20 minutes and then played a match. I love their spirits and the opportunities they see even when they are uncomfortable and I'm thankful for this group. We're looking forward to practicing for two days in preparation for Lipscomb Saturday."
What I mean by FGCU played in reverse, I mean both teams agreed to play singles first before doubles due to impending weather. Originally, the matchup was scheduled to be play Thursday, April 4.
The Lions took an early as the Eagles forfeited their first matchup at #6 singles, but that didn't stop the other five matches that were underway.
It didn't take long for junior Maja Ornberg (10-5) to tie the score for the Eagles as she defeated freshman Payton Andrews 6-1, 6-3 at #1 singles. Senior Julia Ascua (8-6) would follow with a 6-0, 7-5 win over senior Claudia Arroyo before senior Patricia Villar (5-3) followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win over junior Nina Linke.
With the score 3-1 FGCU, senior Laura Falceto-Font (4-8) had no trouble in battling senior Nele Seitz as the native of Zaragoza, Spain won in straight sets by a score of 7-5, 6-3.
Sophomore Sara Kelly (7-7) fought hard in a three-set match. After dropping the first set, the Naples native was able pull away in the third set over freshman Sydney Flesch by a score of 6-7, 6-3 1-0 (10-6).
In doubles, despite forfeiting at #3 doubles, the Eagles would claim the final point as Ascua and Ornberg (8-6) defeated Arroyo and Andrews 6-0 at #1 doubles before Villar and Kelly (9-2) defeated Linke and freshman Megan Humphreys 6-3 at #2 doubles.
Up Next:
The Eagles head to Nashville to face Lipscomb (13-4, 2-1 A-SUN) at noon on Saturday April 5.
