SCF Softball Readies SPC for Sophomore Night

The SCF softball team (35-11, 12-2 Suncoast) return home for their final doubleheaders at the SCF Softball Complex. The Manatees welcome St. Pete College (23-20, 5-9 Suncoast) on Tuesday, April 9 at 5 and 7 pm.

Last Time Out:
The Manatees are coming off of a sweep over South Florida State winning game one by a score of 10-4 in game one before winning game two in a nail biter of a comeback by a score of 3-2. The Manatees claimed the first two games at home on March 28 where they won 8-6 in game one before winning 3-1 in game two.

Currently, the Manatees sit in second place in the Suncoast Conference behind #1 FSW (44-1, 11-1 Suncoast) while in the rankings, they have gained not just state looks, but also national looks this season. In the NJCAA Region 8 Softball Coaches' Poll, the Manatees are ranked #5 behind Seminole State while in the national Top 20 last week, they received votes to be in the national polls before now being ranked #20 in the nation after Southern Idaho (NJCAA Region 18/Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC)) dropped out after splitting two games with Utah State Eastern.

Sophomore Sound-off:
For the doubleheader against SPC, it will be dubbed as sophomore night to honor seven sophomores: Cheyenne Nunez, Megan Seeds, Sydney Parks, Haley McFadden, Kyria Holcomb, Madison Yoder and Nicci Palumbo.

The Squad:
The squad that leads the way for the Manatees are Nunez, McFadden, Holcomb and Seeds while for the freshman group it is Lauren Bostwick, Sabrina "Sas" Long, Madelyn Graham, Madi LoCastro and Kailey Christian.

Nunez, the speedster on the team is batting .361 with 53 hits, a home run 25 RBI and 29 stolen bases. Nunez was 3-for-7 against SFSC with her first home run of the season, four RBI and three runs scored.

Announced on April 1, Nunez has committed to finish her softball career at USC Upstate with her two years of eligibility. The Spartans are 31-10 with a 11-4 record in the Big South.

McFadden is batting .296 with 32 hits, a home run and 24 RBI. McFadden was 1-for-2 with an RBI against SFSC. The RBI happened to be the game winner in game two.

Holcomb is batting .308 with a home run and 25 RBI. Against SFSC, Holcomb finished 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Seeds is batting .318 with 21 hits, a home run, 13 RBI and eight stolen bases while going 2-2 with a 4.20 ERA and 17 strikeouts. In the series against SFSC, Seeds went 1-for-3 with two walks.

Bostwick is batting .264 with 19 RBI and 20 stolen bases. Against SFSC, Bostwick was 3-for-6 with three RBI and a stolen base.

Long is batting .348 with two home runs and 35 RBI. Long was was 3-for-6 with a run scored and two RBI against SFSC .

LoCastro is 8-2 with a 1.98 ERA and 46 strikeouts on the mound while batting .333 with six home runs and 23 RBI at the plate. LoCastro threw a complete game with five strikeouts in the second game against SFSC while going 2-for-3 with a home run.

Graham is batting .313 with 25 hits, four home runs and 25 RBI. Against SFSC, Graham went 0-for-6.

Like LoCastro, Christian also continues her role on the mound as well as the plate with consistency. Christian is 19-2 with a 1.77 ERA and 169 strikeouts while batting .345 with 41 hits, a home run and 29 RBI. Christian's 19 wins are tied for third most in the FCSAA, while her strikeout total is the fourth. Christian threw her 15th complete game in the win over SFSC while striking out six batters in game one of the series while going 4-for-7.

Announced on April 7, Christian has decided to transfer to the University of Delaware with her remaining three years of eligibility. Currently, the Blue Hens are 16-20 with a 3-6 record in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Scouting SPC:
The Titans enter the doubleheader on a six-game losing streak in conference after being swept by #1 FSW losing they lost 9-0 via mercy rule in game one and 7-0 in game two and Polk State losing 8-1 in game one and 5-4 in game two. Currently, the Titans sit in third place behind SCF in Suncoast Conference play.

Sophomore Sydney Tulin and freshman Valerie Colimodio lead the team with three home runs each at the plate with freshman Hannah Barnes leading the team in RBI (32) and freshman Isabella Huff leading in batting average (.408), hits (58) and stolen bases (16).

Meanwhile on the mound, Tulin is 7-4 with a 4.49 ERA and 47 strikeouts while freshman Ashley Smith is 5-4 with a 2.59 ERA and 49 strikeouts.

Series History (2012-present):
As of 2012, the Manatees are 18-14 against the Titans which includes the first doubleheader on March 28 where the Manatees won 6-3 in game one and 10-5 in game two. The Titans last win over the Manatees was on March 29, 2018 where they won 8-3.
