FGCU WBB vs Johnson and Wales Recap

Senior Tytionia Adderly became the program's all-time rebounding leader as the FGCU women's basketball team (4-1) produced an 89-56 win over Johnson and Wales (4-1) inside Alico Arena on Tuesday.

"There was definitely some bright spots," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said of his team's performance. "Davion had another outstanding game. She was explosive offensively. Ty set our all-time rebounding record. She's the best rebounder we've ever had here, so it was a good moment to see her take over the top spot in that area. Other than that, we had some bright spots, but there were a lot of areas that we need to clean up and clean up fast if we're going to beat a team we want to beat."

Adderly pulled down an offensive rebound with four minutes left in the opening quarter to break Sarah Hansen's (2010-14, 887) all-time record. She pushed her career total to 890 while finishing with six boards in 10 minutes of action. She is averaging 8.8 rebounds per contest this year, and 517 of her career caroms have come inside Alico Arena. 

"Relentless effort," Smesko said when asked post game about what makes Adderly special. "She has a pride in her defensive performance. She wants to defend things the right way. The other thing about Ty is that she is really, really bright. She picks things up quickly. If she sees something on film, she'll instantly make a correction. You combine someone who's athletic, tough, has a relentless effort and really smart, that's how you get someone who's as productive on the defensive end and the boards as Ty."

Redshirt senior Davion Wingate registered a game-high 21 points, while classmate Keri Jewett-Giles (14) and junior Alyssa Blair (10) also reached double-digit scoring.

The Eagles finished .423 from the field while making 16-of-42 attempts from long range, led by three apiece from Jewett-Giles and Blair. FGCU closed the first quarter on an 11-0 run and extended that stretch to 19 straight following a layup from Wingate with just under eight minutes left in the half. They led by 36 at the half and by as many as 39 in the second half on six occasions.

Redshirt junior Anja Marinkovic and grad student Ashli O'Neal scored nine points apiece while just missing double-figures. O'Neal made a team-best 5-for-6 from the foul line, while Marinkovic finished 2-for-5 from 3-point range.

Redshirt sophomore Emma List had five points, four rebounds, three steals and one assist over 22 minutes in what was her debut in front of the Alico Arena crowd.

Wingate has a team-high 99 points through five games. Her .818 shooting percentage on 9-for-11 shooting on Tuesday is tied with Jessica Cattani (.818 vs Florida Memorial on Dec. 30, 2017) for the sixth-best performance in the program's Division I era and inside Alico Arena all-time.

Jewett-Giles has five straight games with at least 11 points to open the season. Blair, who made her first start of the season, came within three of matching her season-high before settling for her second double-digit effort of the season.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday against Saint Francis at 2 p.m. The game will be held at Florida Southwestern College (FSW) due to Alico Arena playing host to the A-SUN volleyball tournament. The game will not be televised or streamed.

Notes:
Adderly's 890 rebounds puts her 17th in ASUN history, surpassing Chelsea McMillan (886, USC Upstate, 2008-11) on Tuesday. She needs just 110 more rebounds to become the 12th player in conference history with 1,000 or more in a career.

Jewett-Giles (978) and Wingate (977) are now the two closest players to reaching 1,000 points in their NCAA career. Nasrin Ulel (972) and O'Neal (881) are also on track to reach the mark this season, which would make this year's version of the Eagles the first in the program's history to have four reach the milestone in the same season.
