SCF Baseball Takes Big Win Over Tampa JV
Bradenton, Fla - The SCF baseball team (11-9) were put back to their winning ways as they defeated the University of Tampa JV (2-4) 18-7. With the win, the Manatees are now 26-1-1 against the Spartans.
"The guys swung the bats good, aside from the two innings they (Tampa JV) scored, and they had some decent pitching no matter who were playing," said head coach Tim Hill II. "Tampa JV had some good arms. It's always nice to get a win, no matter who you're playing, but we should not take them for granted because they have a good program."
"We did well," said sophomore Kevin Karstetter. "We came out ready to play and we hit the ball and pitched well."
"I thought we did good," said freshman Jalen Hairston. "We came out with a lot of energy and put the bat on the ball and scored runs."
"We got up early in the lead," said freshman Brendan Albrittain. "It made it easy for us to pitch and throw it over the plate to see if they could hit and we threw some good pitches."
Hill II sent freshman Preston Wetherell to the mound while Tampa JV head coach Mark Johnson went with sophomore Jackson Shembekar to counter.
The Manatees would strike first in the bottom of the first as sophomore Lucas Ismaili would send a two-run homer to center to bring in Karstetter for his first of the season. After a double by classmate Mario Lopez, Jr., sophomore Austin Dearing would send a single to left to bring in Lopez, Jr. to make it 3-0 SCF.
In the bottom of the second, the Manatees extended their lead further. After a one-out walk drawn by freshman Erick Almonte before he stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, sophomore Brayden Woodburn would send an infield single to short to bring in Almonte. After back-to-back single by Karstetter and Ismaili, Woodburn would score on a wild pitch before Lopez reach on a fielding error before being called out at second while Karstetter and Ismaili scored to make it 7-0 SCF.
The Spartans would get on the board at the top of the third after scoring on a wild pitch before freshmen Bobby Faluso and Nolan Hick each hit into a sacrifice fly and classmate Ethan Strikowski hit an RBI single to make it 7-4 SCF.
The Manatees seemed unfazed as Hairston would send a two-run homer to right to bring in sophomore Ben Gilbert for a 9-4 SCF lead. It was in fact Hairston's first collegiate hit and first collegiate home run.
"It felt good, especially with it being my first collegiate hit of the season," said Hairston on hitting the home run. "It was a good feeling for me."
"Jalen is a good player and has helped us out on the mound a lot more than swinging the bat," said Hill II on Hairston. "I thought I'd give him another shot to play tonight and he did well. I'm very happy for him hitting his first collegiate home run with a nice swing."
At the top of the fourth, Hill would pull Wetherell and send Albrittain to the mound. Despite putting a runner on base from a fielding error, the former Hillsborough CC pitcher struck out two to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Manatees would get into double digit scoring as Gilbert would score on a wild pitch for a 10-4 SCF lead. Two innings later, Karstetter would send a double to center to bring in freshman Jayce Blalock to make it 11-4 SCF.
Hill II would make another pitching change as he sent freshman Evan Mastromauro would come in. Despite giving up a single and an error, the former Stetson Hatter was able to get out of the top of the eighth.
In the bottom half of the eighth, the Manatees kept their offensive onslaught of scoring beginning with Lopez, Jr. getting hit by a pitch. After back-to-back singles by Dearing and Gilbert, Blalock and Almonte would draw back-to-back bases loaded walk and bring in Lopez, Jr. and Dearing. A fielder's choice by Woodburn would bring in Gilbert. After Karstetter and Ismaili hit back-to-back RBI singles to bring in Blalock and Woodburn, Lopez, Jr., who batted around would add the final runs after a two-RBI single to bring in Karstetter and Ismaili to make it 18-4 SCF.
The Spartans would add their final runs of the game after an RBI single by freshman Aiden Nolasco and two-run homer by junior Jose Silva III made it 18-7 still in favor of the Manatees, but it was all they could produce as the Manatees took the win.
Wetherell would earn a no-decision after giving up three runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Albrittain would secure his first collegiate win after throwing four hitless innings of relief with six strikeouts, while Mastromauro gave up four runs on four hits with one strikeout in two innings of relief.
"I felt good," said Albrittain on his game. "I had a decent amount of time to work on some things, but I thought I got back in the rhythm of things and did well."
"Brendan did a nice job getting strikes," said Hill II on Albrittain.
Shembaker would be dubbed with the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout in one and two-thirds innings.
Six Manatees had a multi-hit game. Karstetter and Dearing both had four hits each. Karstetter (4-for-4) added two RBI, three runs and one walk, while Dearing added one RBI, one run and one walk.
"I felt good," said Karstetter on his game. "I tried to hit the ball hard and that usually does good for us."

SCF Baseball Takes Win Over Tampa JV
5th Herd Sweeps HCC
Bradenton, Fla - The SCF basketball team (15-10, 5-4 Southern) secured their first and only conference sweep of the season as they defeated Hillsborough (15-11, 2-8 Southern) 90-85 at Hal Chasey Gymnasium. With the win, the Manatees are now 19-19 overall against the Hawks.
"It's a big round for conference play and it's hard to beat a team three times in conference," said head coach Tom Parks. "Hillsborough has continually improved over the years since I have been here and they have a lot of fight, which showed tonight after they didn't give up against us. They lead a lot of the game through coach Coleman's style, so hats off to them for the fight."
"I thought our guys did a really good job for the most part making plays down the stretch, getting rebounds, dunks and layups while pushing the ball down the floor."
"While we started off rough in the beginning and did not play as a team, we had to turn it around in the second half," said sophomore Ametri Moss "We rebounded better than them (HCC) and played together with intensity to get the win and that was our mindset. It felt amazing getting the sweep over them, being that this is my last season with the team."
"Overall, we played really well," said freshman Elijah Terry. "We were sluggish in the first half where we were making difficult shots that were hurting us, so when the second half came in, we stepped it up and didn't take our foot off the gas and got the win. It felt good getting the sweep over Hillsborough and we look to keep that same intensity when we play FSW."
The first saw the Manatees score their first 10 points off of the hands of sophomore Skylar Wicks, but the Hawks lead from shooting by sophomore Jasper Floyd. While the Manatees tried to counter with Moss scoring, the first half would go in favor of Hillsborough by a score of 44-38.
At the start of the second half, the Manatees started to build up their offense with a little bit of a secret weapon. As the Manatees took advantage of miscommunication from the Hawks and take their first lead thanks to back-to-back 3-point shots by sophomore Isaiah Josue before Terry lead the offense with several monster dunks. In the end, the Manatees took over the second half and took the win at home.
Four Manatees scored in double figures in the game. It was Terry that lead the way as he secured his second collegiate double-double of a career-high 22 points (9-for-13 FG, 4-for-4 FT), 10 rebounds, three assists and one block off the bench.
"Slim has the ability to be a mismatch problem for the other team," said Parks on Terry. "While we don't use him often as a five, he can play really well there. The thing about him is we don't call a play for him because no one ran a play for him, but he had ways to help the team whether he's scoring, rebounding or getting his hands ready. That's his nature."
Moss would follow with 14 points (6-for-14 FG, 1-for-1 3PT, 1-for-1 FT), eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal.
"I just had to step up in the second half," said Moss on his game. "I wasn't able to find my rhythm on the offensive side in the first half, so I had to step up and get involved with my team to get the win."
Wicks and Josue would round out the order with 12 points each. Wicks (4-for-7 FG, 2-for-5 3PT, 2-for-2 FT) added four rebounds, three assists and a steal, while Josue (4-for-7 FG, 4-for-5 3PT) had four rebounds, two assists and three steals off the bench.
Freshman Kasheem Grady added nine points (4-for-9 FG), three rebounds and three assists, while classmate Josh Ijeh and sophomore Cobey Harraway had six points each. Ijeh (3-for-5 FG) added four rebounds and one assist, while Harraway (3-for-9 FG) added three rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore Ronnail Tape (three points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal), redshirt freshman Zach Smith (two points and two assists) and freshmen Malyk Rebetez (two points, two rebounds, three assists and one steal) and Dresean Knight (two points, one rebound, one assist, one steal and one block) also contributed in the game.
For the Hawks, Floyd lead the way with 35 points (12-for-21 FG, 4-for-6 3PT, 7-for-8 FT), six rebounds, two assists and four steals, while sophomores Georden Rogers and Dominic Gooden each had 15 points. Rogers added five rebounds, one assist and two steals, while three rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

SCF Baseball Set for Non-Neutral Road Trip
SCF Takes Down Warner JV
Bradenton, Fla - Sophomore Kevin Karstetter's walk-off hit paved the way for the RV SCF baseball team (8-3) as they continued to take care of their home field at Robert C. Wynn Field after defeating Warner University JV 12-2 in eight innings via mercy rule.
"It was a real hard fought game for the guys," said head coach Tim Hill II. "They played really well on our home field, as they should, and took care of business."
"It was a good game, despite the delay," said Karstetter. "We reeled it back in and the guys came back ready to go with a lot of energy and that's all you could control."
"We came in ready to go, even with an iffy start, but wrapped it up nicely and came to play for the win," said freshman Jeremy Weaver.
"I think we had a good win today overall," said sophomore Nick Romagnola. "We went up there with good approaches, which is the goal every game, and saw some good pitches while taking advantage of Warner's mistakes and came out on top."
"We came out and played as a team, which is all we could ask for," said sophomore Mario Lopez Jr.. "We got a lot of great guys here and they have provided a lot to the table, especially for the returners."
The game was originally scheduled to start at 6 pm, however, due to partial issues with travel, the game started at 7 pm insteam
Hill sent Weaver to the mound while Warner head coach David Moskovits sent junior Bryson Mistretta to counter.
The Royals would get on the board at the top of the first after freshman Kody Flynt drew a walk and scored on a passed ball, but Weaver would get out of the first with two strikeouts. In the next inning, freshman Jose Ramirez would send a home run to left to make it 2-0 Warner.
In the bottom of the second, the Manatees started to wake up and take the lead. After a two-out walk by freshman Jayce Blalock and a single by sophomore Liam Moreno, freshman Erick Almonte would reach on fielding error by the second baseman while Blalock scored. Moreno would then scored on another fielding error while sophomore Brayden Woodburn reached on a fielding error before Karstetter drew a walk to load the bases for classmate Austin Dearing. On a 1-0 count, Dearing would reach on a third fielding error while Almonte and Woodburn scored to make it 4-2 SCF.
The Manatees would add to their lead as sophomore Preston Wetherell would score on a wild pitch after hitting a single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher in the bottom of the third.
Despite giving up a single, Weaver remained calm, cooled and collected on the mound as the Winter Haven native would strikeout three to end the top half
In the bottom of the fourth, Dearing would send a single to center and bring in Almonte to make it 6-2 SCF.
At the top of the fifth, Hill II would make a pitching change and send sophomore Nick Romagnola to the mound. Despite putting two runners on, the Hillsborough transfer and Bradenton native would get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Almonte would bring in Wetherell on a groundout to make it 7-2 SCF. Two innings later, Karstetter would show off his power as he did in the game in Panama Beach as the Pennsylvanian sent a two-run blast to left to bring in himself and sophomore Liam Moreno for his third of the season. Karstetter was not the only one to show power as sophomore Mario Lopez Jr. added a two-run blast for his first of the season while bringing in Wetherell.
"When I was at eh plate, I knew we had a chance to end the game," said Lopez Jr on hitting the home run. "I just tried to size more middle away in the at-bat and then he threw a fastball down the middle and I was able to seize the opportunity and hit it out of the yard."
In the bottom of the eighth, the Manatees decided to end the game as Karstetter on an 0-1 count would send a single to center to bring in Almonte for the walk-off win.
"Anytime you get runners in scoring position, you have to get them in," said Karstetter getting the walk-off hit. "As an older guy, you should drive in runs and that's what I wanted to go and I got the job done, which was nice."
Weaver would end up getting his first collegiate win after giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
"The main goals is just get strikes," said Weaver. "I was trying to get my fastball and curveball working and it prevailed altogether.
Mistretta would get the loss after giving up four unearned runs on two hits with four walks in two innings.
Romagnola would throw three scoreless innings of relief with one walk and three strikeouts, while sophomore Evan Mastromauro threw one scoreless inning with one strikeout.
"I know the biggest thing for me is getting ahead in the count early and that's always my mindset," said Romagnola. "I settled in after the first two innings and it worked out and that felt great."
Three Manatees had a multi-hit game. Karstetter and Moreno were 3-for-5 each. Karstetter had the home run, three RBI, one run, one walk and one stolen base, while Moreno had three runs.
Wetherell was 2-for-4 with a walk, three runs and a stolen base, while Lopez Jr. was 1-for-4 with the two-run home run.
Dearing (1-for-3, one RBI, two walks and one stolen base), Sanchez (1-for-5), Almonte (1-for-5, one RBI, two runs and one walk), Woodburn (one run, one stolen base and two walks) and Blalock (one run and two walks) also contributed.
Ramirez lead the way for the Royals as he went 2-for-3 with a home run.
Notes:
Karstetter was named the NJCAA Region 8 Player of the Week after his outing in Panama City Beach.
"I just wanted to win and getting this award was nice," said Karstetter on winning the accolade. "Winners get treated different at the end of the day and while the personal accolade was nice, you got to perform as a team and get the win."
"Kevin had a really good week and I wasn't surprised that he earned it," said Hill II on Karstetter's accolade. "It's a huge honor after being the second Manatee to get a weekly award early in the season."
*side note: Freshman Michael Forrett was named the NJCAA Region 8 Pitcher of the Week last week after his no-hitter against Northwest Florida State (January 27).
Hill II also made a bump up on his coaching record as he earned his 350th win as head coach for the Manatees.
"It feels like I'm getting older and after a few years with the team now, it feels amazing," laughed Hill II on the milestone. "
