SCF Baseball Takes Win Over Tampa JV

Tampa, Fla -  The RV SCF baseball team (9-5) got out of their losing slump as they defeated the University of Tampa junior varsity team (1-3) 4-2. With the win, the Manatees are now 25-1-1 against the Spartans.

"This was a nice way to get back on the win column to start this week," said head coach Tim Hill II. "We have four tough games coming up for this week on this tough schedule with Central Florida and Tallahassee, so I'm glad we're back on the winning side of things."

Hill II sent sophomore Trey Clucas to the mound, while Tampa JV head coach Mark Johnson went with freshman Preston Shembekar to counter.

After the first two innings went scoreless, the Manatees would score first at the top of the third as sophomore Kevin Karstetter would bring in freshman Jayce Blalock with an RBI groundout for a 1-0 SCF lead.

At the top of the fifth, the Manatees would extend their lead to 3-0 after a two-RBI double by sophomore Lucas Ismaili drove in Karstetter and sophomore Mario Lopez Jr. Meanwhile, Clucas remained in control on the mound as he was able to close out the fifth inning with ease.

At the top of the eighth, the Manatees would add one final run to their scoreboard as sophomore Preston Wetherell would send an RBI single to left to bring in Lopez Jr. to make it 4-0 SCF.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Spartans would get their first runs on the board off of two bases-loaded walks, but it was all they could produce as the Manatees took the win.

Clucas would earn his first win of the season after throwing five scoreless inning, giving up four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Freshman Evan Mastromauro would get the save after giving up one run with two walks and one strikeout in a third of an inning of relief.

Freshman Liam Best would throw two scoreless innings of relief with one walk and three strikeouts, while classmate Jeremy Weaver gave up one run on one hit with three walks in one and two-thirds innings.

Shembekar would be dubbed with the loss for the Spartans.

Three Manatees had a multi-hit game. Ismaili would be the leader offensively as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Karstetter and Wetherell also had two hits and an RBI each. Karstetter (2-for-5) added two stolen bases, while Wetherell added one walk and one stolen base.

Lopez Jr. (1-for-3, two runs), sophomores Brayden Woodburn (1-for-5, two stolen bases) and Austin Dearing (1-for-4, one stolen base) and freshman Erick Almonte (1-for-4, one walk and two stolen bases) had the remaining four hits, while Blalock (one run) also contributed.

Other Suncoast Scores:
Hillsborough (4-8) fell to Pasco-Hernando State (8-3) by a score of 9-3. The Hawks will face Santa Fe College Wednesday afternoon, February 15 at 2 pm.

St. Pete College (0-9) fell to Santa Fe College (14-0) by a score of 17-0. The Titans will face Florida Southern College JV (0-1) Tuesday afternoon, February 14 at 3 pm.

Up Next:
The Manatees return home to Robert C. Wynn Field for the next four games as they welcome #4 College of Central Florida (11-0) Wednesday night, February 15 at 5 pm before welcoming Tallahassee CC (7-1) for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday, February 17-18. Freshman Bryan Gomez will get the nod to start against Central Florida on Wednesday. For the opener against TCC on Friday, classmate Ed Wagner will get the nod, while sophomore Ryan Stefiuk will start game two on Saturday. Game three is yet to be determined who will start that game.
