SCF Volleyball Falls Short to Indian River

Bradenton, Fla - The SCF volleyball team (0-3, 0-2 Suncoast) once again fell short at Hal Chasey Gymnasium as they fell to Indian River State (2-4, 2-4 Suncoast) 3-0 (14-25, 21-25, 20-25). With the loss, the Manatees are now 3-6 against the Pioneers.

"Individually there were some highlights," said head coach Lynn Burnett. "I think each player is progressing and I see improvement in them individually. The next piece of it is them coming together as a team."

"I feel like the team did great," said freshman Lana Sandanom. "There was a lot of good points during the match. We were a lot more communicative and took more place on the court. Each person was taking care of their jobs."

"I thought we fought pretty hard," said sophomore Lison Stoffel. "There was a lot of mistakes we could have avoided and we weren't under them, we could have won the match. I think there was just some mistakes and miscommunication sometimes, but we always need to work on that and it was a lot better."

It was freshman Anllel Caballero Fernandez that lead the Manatees offensively as she got her first collegiate double-double of 14 kills and 12 digs. Fernandez also added one ace. Sophomore Jazmin Spencer followed behind Fernandez with 10 kills, two digs, an ace and a block.

Sophomore Adelene Jideofor rounded out the order as she finished with five kills, one dig and two blocks, while classmate Kaylee Forman, who was one dig shy of a double-double, finished with 30 assists, nine digs and a kill.

Defensively, sophomore Giulia Rodrigues lead the team with 13 digs and two assists. Meanwhile, sophomores Kaysha Kahai-Enos (one dig) and Jadyn Wallen (one kill and two digs), Stoffel (four digs) and Sandanom (two kills and two digs) also contributed in the match. Sandanom earned her first start in her home debut after her performances in the scrimmages against Ave Maria and St. Thomas University.

"I felt great and was really excited to play," said Sandanom on her first start. "The whole team gave a lot of energy, so we were just excited. I thought it was going to be scary, but it wasn't. I just wanted to play and give everything I had."

"At first it was a little bit hard on passing and defense," said Sandanom on her game. "But at the end, I got more situated. I did have some mistakes, but there were some good things too. Overall, I'm very proud of myself."

Meanwhile, Stoffel played at the defensive specialist position instead of setter.

"Defensive specialist is not a position I have never played before," said Stoffel. "Ever since this past weekend, I've been on the court as a DS, so it was very different playing at that position, but I was pretty happy trying it out."

"I think I did pretty good," said Stoffel on her game. "There were some mistakes on receiving the ball, but overall, I'm pretty happy about what I did out there."

"Just watching her (Lison) over the last five matches that we had before coming in tonight, she just is so scrappy," said Burnett on Stoffel. "She gets so many things up and she reads really well, so it's not like she flying across the court, she just positions herself where she needs to be to get the dig. Shelby (McGee) is much the same way, they're very good read of the match and the other team on the attack, so because of that, they're able to be in the right place."

For the Pioneers, freshman Greta Klotz lead the way offensively with nine kills, three digs and an ace, while sophomore Jeyhlen followed with seven kills and a block. Sophomore Izabella Rae lead the team with 27 assists, three kills, three digs and two aces, while classmate Jasmine Sayre lead defensively with 16 digs.

Notes:

Freshman Shelby McGee made her debut in the third set. McGee joined the team from Hudson High School in Hudson.
