The FGCU men's and women's tennis teams began with a bit of a struggle on both ends, but did manage to pick up a few wins in the Finemark FGCU Collegiate Open at the Bonita Bay Club in Bonita Springs, Florida.
For the men's team, they faced Power 5 teams Arkansas and Kentucky. The Eagles managed to win all four doubles matches.
Going into singles, sophomore Juan Montes and junior Marcelo Tebet picked up wins. Montes defeated Arkansas's Adam Sanjuro 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 while Tebet defeated Kentucky's Parth Aggarwal 6-4, 6-3.
On the women's side, the Eagles faced Power 5 Purdue.
In doubles, the Eagles picked up two wins as the duo of junior Maja Ornberg and senior Julia Ascua defeated Silvia Ambrosio and Caitlin Calkins 6-1 while juniors Sara Kelly and Bridget Forster defeated Seira Shimiz and Zala Dovnik 7-6.
In singles, the Eagles picked up three singles wins as Ascua defeated Shimiz 6-2, 7-5, Forster defeated Calkins 6-2, 6-4, and senior Patricia "Patri" Villar defeated Dovnik 6-2, 6-1.
The Eagles will continue on for day two as the men will face Power 5 Illinois and Louisville while the women play Princeton.
