FGCU VB @ Liberty Preview

The FGCU volleyball team (13-6, 6-1 A-SUN) return on the road for conference play as they travel to Lynchburg, Virginia to face A-SUN newcomer Liberty (7-12, 4-2 A-SUN) for the first ever matchup at the Vines Center on Friday, October 12 at 6 P.M.

Last Time Out:
The Eagles are coming off of a three-match homestead for conference. They would fall 3-1 against Kennesaw on Friday, October 7 before defeating Lipscomb 3-1 on Sunday, October 9 and shutting out Stetson 3-0 on October 9.

Currently, the Eagles sit in second place behind Kennesaw.

What It Still Do VanLiew:
Offensively for the Eagles, sophomore Cortney VanLiew can't seem to stay away from getting all her kills (lol). VanLiew leads the team with 261 kills. In the match vs Stetson, VanLiew had 11 kills and 43 in the three matches at home. In fact, the Seymour native has had at least 10 kills in six straight matches.

#1 Hitter:
Senior Sharonda Pickering has been hitting the ball profoundly on the court. Pickering is #1 in the nation in hitting percentage (.445), ahead of Loyola Marymount's Emma Johnson. Pickering has 125 kills (third most). In the match against Stetson, the native of the British Virgin Islands had eight kills with a .278 hitting percentage.

Spice Burns:
Junior Daniele Serrano has been on a hot moment offensively and defensively. Currently the Sanford native has 119 kills and 87 blocks.

Offensively, Serrano had 11 kills against Stetson, defensively, she had six total blocks. In the first set against Stetson, Serrano got her 500th career kill and currently has 509 career kills.

On the defensive side, Serrano tied Ashley Yance (45, 2005-09) for second all-time in solo blocks (45) and passed Yance (242, 287) for second all-time in block assists (243) and total blocks (288).

Ain't No Party Like a Block Party:
Along with Pickering and Serrano, the rest of the Block Party (junior Giovanna "Giogio" Borgiotti, senior Kaiti Krivdo, sophomore Snowy Burnam and freshman Tori Morris) have played big on the defense front as they combined a total of 284 blocks. Against Stetson, the squad had 15 total blocks (2 solo).

Oh 4,000, My 4,000:
Senior Maggie Rick inches closer to being the all-time leader in assists. Rick currently has 4,128 career assists and 281 away from passing Gigi Meyer (4,408) for most all-time in career assists.

Rick had 24 assists against Stetson, and currently has 467 assists

Swing That (Ax)ner:
Freshman Dana Axner has been chopping with her digs. Axner currently has 318 digs for her first year.

Against Stetson, the Dublin, Ohio native had a record-breaking 28 digs, and she passed Holly Youngquist for most digs in a three-set match. In fact, it was Axner's seventh straight match where she had at least 10 digs in the match (beginning 9/21 against Jacksonville), and her fifth match with 20 or more digs.

Scouting Liberty:
The Flames are coming off of this past weekend as they fell to Lipscomb (3-2) and Kennesaw (3-1). The Flames sit in fourth place behind Lipscomb.

Offensively, juniors Casey Goodwin and Anna Gragg lead the team on the offensive front. Goodwin leads the team with 160 kills and 24 aces, while Gragg is behind Goodwin with 146 kills.

In the past weekend, Goodwin had 26 kills while Gragg had 23.

Defensively, senior Margaret Latchford leads the team in digs (249). In both matches against Lipscomb and Kennesaw, Latchford had 29 total digs (14 vs Lipscomb, 15 vs Kennesaw).
