The FGCU men's golf team wrapped up the Pinetree Intercollegiate following a final-round 295 (+7) to finish eighth among 11 teams with a 54-hole 890 (+26).
"We started the day slow and then picked up some momentum mid-round, even pushing up to fifth place at one point," FGCU head coach Eric Booker said. "Potter's birdies on 11, 12, 13 and 14 were big. Unfortunately, we didn't finish strong but were very close. It's time to regroup and get ready for our home event this coming weekend."
Senior Andrew Potter fired a 4-under 68 to pace the Green and Blue in the final round. Despite a double-bogey on his second hole after starting out on the 10th, he birdied the 14th, eagled the 16th and recorded four consecutive birdies from the second through fifth holes.
With his result, Potter tied his career-low set in the Stetson Legacy Intercollegiate on Feb. 26 last year. His 217 (+1) for the tournament was good for a 10th-place tie.
Freshman Tate Heintzelman and sophomore Cole Castro finished just one stroke apart. Heintzelman, who fired a second-round 71, finished at 223 (+7) with three birdies, while Castro had a pair of birdies and finished with a 73 (+1) on Tuesday to check in at 224. The duo finished tied for 27th and 29th, respectively.
Junior Brent Fredericksen (233, +17, T-50th) and freshman Chase Bigham (238, +25, T-53rd) rounded out the lineup.
The tournament itself featured close finish as just nine strokes separated fourth through eighth place. Wisconsin captured the event with an 857 (-7), which was just ahead of Kennesaw State (-2) and Western Kentucky (-1). Western Kentucky's Billy Tom Sargent defeated Wisconsin's Jordan Hahn in a playoff to win the individual championship.
