M. Golf: Pinetree Intercollegiate Day One Recap

A trio of players fired a second-round 71 as the FGCU men's golf team sits in seventh-place (595, +19) following the first day of the Pinetree Intercollegiate on Monday.

The Eagles were positioned in next to last place among the 11-team field following a 307 (+19) first round, but rebounded with an even-par 288 to jump three spots. They are only 11 strokes behind fourth place Austin Peay. Western Kentucky leads a trio of under-par teams at 570 (-6) heading into the final round.

"It was a tale of two teams out there," FGCU head coach Eric Booker said. "We redeemed ourselves in the afternoon after an awful first round, which puts us in position to creep up the leaderboard on Tuesday. I'm proud of how the team handled the adversity and disappointment of the first round."

Freshman Tate Heintzelman, senior Andrew Potter and freshman Chase Bigham each shot a 1-under 71 in the second round, followed by junior Brent Fredericksen (75) and sophomore Cole Castro (77).

Heintzelman led the team with a low two-round total of 145 (+2), which has him in a tie for 12th individually.

Potter and Castro are both also among the top 40 individuals as Potter's 149 (+5) is tied for 33rd, while Castro's 151 (+7) is good for a 39th-place tie.

Bigham had the best improvement from the first to second rounds by shaving 10 strokes off his 9-over 81. His two-round 152 (+8) has him tied for 42nd, while Fredericksen  is tied for 53rd with a 157 (+13)
