SCF Baseball Snaps Losing Streak Over Broward

After losing five straight games, the SCF baseball team (5-6) snapped their skid at home as they defeated Broward College (1-7) 12-2. With the win, the Manatees are now 17-7 against the Seahawks (2012-present).

For the game, head coach Tim Hill II sent sophomore Justin Wrobleski to the mound while Broward head coach Gregg Bennis sent sophomore Myles Brown to counter.

The Seahawks would get the first run on the board at the top of the first after redshirt freshman Alex Cordero hit a solo shot to right for his first home run of the season, but the Manatees would respond back in the bottom half beginning with a leadoff single by sophomore Rook Ellington before being called out on a fielder's choice by freshman Cameron Lee. Following a single by sophomore AJ Fritz, classmate Aaron McKeithan would send a three-run shot to left for his second home run of the season.

In the bottom of the second, the Manatees continued to extend their lead. After freshman Jacob Steinberg started the second inning with a leadoff single. Following a one-out single by freshman Richard Rodriguez, Ellington would send Steinberg home with an RBI single before Lee sent Rodriguez home on an RBI groundout.

The Manatees continued extending their lead in the bottom of the third beginning with back-to-back singles by McKeithan and freshman Owen Ayers. McKeithan would then score on a balk by Brown before freshman Steve Nitch drew a walk. Two batters later, Rodriguez would put another run on the board with an RBI single to send Nitch home before Ellington brought in Steinberg and Rodriguez home with a two-RBI double for a 9-1 SCF lead. In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Remi Patry would hit an RBI double to send Nitch home for a 10-1 SCF lead.

At the top of the seventh, the Seahawks would get their second run on the board as Codero hit an RBI single. In the bottom half of the inning, the Manatees would add two more final runs to their score. After back-to-back singles by Ayers and Nitch, Patry would send Ayers home with an RBI groundout before Rodriguez hit an RBI single to send Nitch home before the Manatees sealed the deal.

Wrobleski would get the win after giving up one run on one hit with two walks and five strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Sophomore Grady Martin gave up one run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings, while freshman Michael Dorso threw two scoreless innings with a walk and a strikeout.

Brown would get the loss for the Seahawks after giving up eight runs on 10 hits with one walk in 2.1 innings.

Ellington, Ayers, and Rodriguez each had three hits. Ellington added three RBI, while Ayers added a run scored and Rodriguez added two runs scored and two RBI.

McKeithan and Steinberg had two hits each. McKeithan was 2-for-3 with the three-run homer and two runs, while Steinberg had two runs scored. Patry finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Fritz (1-for-3, one run scored), Nitch (1-for-2, two walks and three runs scored) and sophomore John Malcom (1-for-2) had the teams remaining three hits.

Cordero was 2-for-3 with two RBI. In fact, Codero had the Seahawks' only multi-RBI game. Sophomores Thomas Diaz and Andre Martinez also had two hits as they each finished 2-for-3.

Up Next:
The Manatees will be on the road as they travel to Tallahassee to take on Tallahassee CC (7-4) for a two-game series this weekend. Game one will start Friday, February 14 at 4 pm and Saturday, February 15 at 1 pm.
