SCF Baseball vs Broward Recap

The SCF baseball team (6-2) pulled away with a 10-1 win over Broward College (0-4). With the win, the Manatees, who are ranked #6 in the Prep Baseball Report Top 25, are now 14-7 against the Seahawks as of 2012.

For starters, SCF head coach Tim Hill II sent sophomore Aaron Brown to the mound, while Broward head coach John Broderick sent freshman Zak Sprankle to counter.

After Brown breezed through the top of the first inning going three up, three down, the Manatees would get on the board first. After freshman Tyler Acosta started with a lead-off walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a groundout, sophomore Bryce Hulett would groundout but sent Acosta home for a 1-0 SCF lead.

A lead-off triple at the top of the second from sophomore ​Jack Khawly and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Chase Ashby tied the game at 1-1, but was short-lived as the Manatees took the lead. After back-to-back singles from sophomores Shane Shifflett and Giovany Lorenzo and fellow sophomore John Shields hit by a pitch to load the bases, freshman Remi Patry would send Shifflett home with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1 SCF. Acosta would load the bases for the Manatees again after being hit by a pitch for redshirt sophomore Brian Dillingham. With a 2-0 counts, Dillingham would hit an infield single and send Lorenzo and Shields home to make it 4-1 SCF.

While Brown breezed through the third inning, the Manatees continued to add to the board in the bottom half. After sophomore Josh Crouch started with a lead-off walk, which was followed by a double off the bat of Shifflett, Lorenzo would send Crouch and Shifflett home with a two-run single, which signaled the end for Sprankle. Broderick would call in freshman Myles Brown to take the mound to get the three outs.

As Aaron Brown breezed through the fourth and fifth innings, the Manatees continued to add to the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. After Lorenzo drew a lead-off walk before being called out on a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Max Dineen, who reached first. After Dineen stolen second and third base, sophomore Collin Moore would bring him in with an RBI single to make it 7-1 SCF, but the onslaught did not stop as Patry would deliver a a two-run shot to right for his first home run of the season to make it 9-1 SCF.

The Manatees would add one more run in the sixth as Dineen hit a sacrifice fly and bring in Shifflett to make it 10-1, which would be the final run scored in the game.

Brown would earn his second win of the season after seven innings. The Vanderbilt transfer gave up one run on three hits while walking two and striking out 10 batters.

Freshman Grady Martin, who came in relief for Brown, threw the final two scoreless innings giving up one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.

Sprankle would earn the loss after two innings. Sprankle gave up six runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two.

Aside from Myles Brown, who threw three innings, giving up three runs on four hits while walking one batter, fellow freshman Jeissy De La Cruz threw three innings and gave up one run on four hits with one walk.

Lorenzo went 4-for-4 with two RBI and a walk.

Dillingham (2-for-5, two RBI), Patry (2-for-3, home run and three RBI), and Shifflett (2-for-4, three runs) had two hits each.

The Manatees will head to New Port Richey to take on Pasco-Hernando State (3-3) on Friday, February 8 at 3 pm.
