Raining 3s vs NJIT Preview

The FGCU women's basketball team (19-4, 10-0 A-SUN) will have a brief home appearance as they three hours to Newark, New Jersey as they prepare to face NJIT (5-17, 2-7 A-SUN) at the Alico Arena on Tuesday night, February 12 at 7 pm.

Last Time Out:
The Eagles are coming off of a nail biter game as they defeated Liberty 66-65 Saturday afternoon. So far the Eagles are still in first in the conference standings and are the only unbeaten team in the A-SUN.

Key Players:
Offensively, junior Nasrin Ulel and redshirt junior Keri Jewett-Giles set the path for the Eagles.

Ulel is averaging 15.4 points per game. Ulel had 11 points and was 2 of 5 from behind the arc. Currently, Ulel currently has 796 career points and is four away from becoming the 15th Eagle to reach 800 career points.

Jewett-Giles is averaging 12.3 points and 2.9 assists per game. Jewett-Giles was held to five points against Liberty. Jewett-Giles currently has 785 in her career.

1,000 Empress's of Assists:
Redshirt senior Lisa Zderadicka has done wonder as her new role of the "Empress of Assists", but has also set a milestone that she got against Liberty. Zderadicka is averaging 9.1 points and 4.1 assists per game. Against Liberty, Zderadicka had 15 points and four assists. Zderadicka reached the milestone of scoring 1,000 career points

Zderadicka currently has 324 career assists, which include the 152 assists with Houston Baptist.

The Rebound Queens:
As far as rebounding, leading the way for the Eagles in the category are junior Tytionia Adderly and redshirt senior Destiny Washington.

Adderly is averaging 6.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Adderly had five points and six rebounds against Liberty (two offensive, four defensive). Adderly has 306 career offensive rebounds and is 24 shy of passing Sarah Hansen (329, 2010-14) as the all-time leader while for defensive rebounds, she has 443 in her career as she tied Adrianne McNally (418, 2002-04) for fourth all-time. She needs one to pass McNally and three to pass Courtney Chihil (420, 2008-12) for third all-time.

In overall rebounds, Adderly has 749 (2nd all-time). Adderly already passed Whitney Knight (735, 2011-12, 2013-16) and needs 138 to pass Hansen (887) as the all-time leader.

Meanwhile, Washington is averaging 8.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. The Loyola Chicago/Ball State transfer had 16 points and seven rebounds against Liberty. As a result, Washington was named A-SUN Newcomer of the Week.

"Des has been tremendous during conference play," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "She just keeps getting better."

Additionally, Washington has 973 points in her career and is now 27 away from reaching 1,000 in her career.

Scouitng NJIT:
The Highlanders are entering the contest with a six-game losing skid after their most recent loss to Kennesaw State (70-47). The Highlanders are currently tied for 7th in conference with Kennesaw.

Leading the way for the Highlanders offensively is senior Kelly Guarino and redshirt junior Danielle Tunstall.

Guarino is averaging 13.4 points per game and is leading the team in 3-pointers made (57). Against Kennesaw, the native of Thiells, New York was held to five points.

Tunstall is averaging 11.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Against Kennesaw, the native of Willingboro, New Jersey had 13 points and three rebounds.

Redshirt junior Tatianna Torres also plays a key role for the Highlanders. Torres is averaging 8.6 points, five rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. Against Kennesaw, Torres had 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

Series History:
FGCU is 10-0 all-time against NJIT dating back to March 6, 2008, which was a non-league matchup. The series went on hiatus after that and resumed in the 2015-16 season when the Highlanders joined the A-SUN. The two teams have met twice in the postseason with the Eagles winning in 2016 (60-31) and 2018 (83-62).
