The FGCU softball team (7-8) suffered a 2-0 loss to BYU (7-9) and a 5-1 defeat to San Diego (7-9) to finish day one of the San Diego Classic Tournament.
"We squandered another gem thrown by Riley," head coach David Deiros said. "We're slumping right now but we will get better soon."
FGCU 0 | BYU 2
Sophomore Haley Morrell accounted for FGCU's lone hit of the night which came in the bottom of the third with one out. Meanwhile, in the circle, senior pitcher Riley Randolph continued her dominance in the circle, taking a perfect game into the six before a one-out walk ended the bid. After a fielding error and a fly out to make it two outs, BYU's Heide Vander tripled down the left field line for the 2-0 advantage – BYU's only hit of the night.
Randolph moves to 5-4 in the losing effort as the senior fanned four batters in the seven innings of work, tossing 94 pitches.
FGCU 1 | SAN DIEGO 5
The home side jumped on the board right away scoring three runs (one earned) in the bottom half of the first. FGCU though responded right away in the next frame with two away. Facing a 2-2 pitch, Morrell launched her second home run of the season over the left field wall to cut the deficit down to 3-1.
San Diego bumped its lead to four scratching one run across in its bottom half and tacked on one more to make it 5-1 on a bases-load walk en route to the final.
In total, the FGCU offense registered four hits, stranding four runners on the bags. Sophomore Marissa Mesiemore gets hit with the loss moving to 2-3 this season after surrendering four runs (two earned) in 1.2 IP.
