The FGCU softball team (9-9) wrapped up their week in the West Coast on a good note as they defeated San Diego State (10-9) 9-0 in six innings via mercy rule at the SDSU Softball Stadium.
"Great team effort to finish the road trip on a high note," head coach David Deiros said. "We still have a ways to go to get better but we are moving into the right direction."
Deiros sent senior Riley Randolph to the mound, while Van Wyk sent redshirt freshman MJ James to counter.
Both teams went scoreless in the first two innings until FGCU opened the door on the scoreboard first at the top of the third. After senior Kate Kelly hit an infield single before stealing second and advancing to third on a ground out, she would score on an Aztec fielding error from a hard ground ball hit by senior Racquel Fournet to make it 1-0 FGCU.
While the Eagles' offense continued to fight, Randolph was also fighting on the mound fanning seven batters in four innings, even through a couple of jams.
At the top of the fifth, the Eagles opened the floodgates a little more on the scoreboard. Kelly would start with a lead-off single before advancing to second on a throwing error and to third on a fly out. Sophomore Haley Morrell would send Kelly home with an RBI single to make it 2-0 FGCU. Freshman Reedy Davenport would then send Morrell home with an RBI single of her own. After senior Brooke Clemens reached first on another Aztec fielding error before sophomore Ahnie Jumper came into pinch run for her, Davenport and Jumper attempted a double steal attempt with Davenport scoring in success to make it 4-0 FGCU while Jumper was called out.
At the top of the sixth, the Eagles would put the mercy rule in effect. Beginning with a one-out single from junior Mikenzie Vaughn, which was followed by a two-out single from Kelly, junior Diane Servideo would smack a single to left and send Vaughn home to make it 5-0 FGCU. After back-to-back RBI doubles from Morrell and Fournet made it 8-0, Davenport would add an insurance run with an RBI single, sending Fournet home to make it 9-0 FGCU before Randolph ended the game with a scoreless sixth inning for the Eagle win.
Randolph would go 7-5 on her record after throwing a six inning four-hit shutout while striking out 10 batters.
James would earn her second loss of the season, putting her at 2-2. James gave up four runs (two earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings.
Junior Alicia Garcia and sophomore Kelsey Munoz also came in for relief. Garcia gave up the remaining five runs on six hits with one walk in one inning, while Munoz threw a third of a scoreless inning.
Kelly went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and a stolen base.
Morrell (2-for-3, three RBIs, two runs scored) and Davenport (2-for-4, two RBIs, one run scored) had two hits each.
Fournet would go 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Fournet's double was the 52nd in her career for Mrs. Doubles.
