SCF Softball Readies for Suncoast Road Trip @ South Florida State

After opening Suncoast Conference play at home, the SCF softball (26-8, 2-0 Suncoast) now readies for Suncoast play on the road as they travel to Avon Park to take on South Florida State College (22-8, 2-0 Suncoast) in a doubleheader Thursday night at 5 and 7 pm at Panther Field.

Last Time Out:
The Manatees opened their part of Suncoast Conference play at home with a sweep over Hillsborough winning by scores of 6-1 and 9-2.

The Squad:
At the plate, the squad of sophomores Cheyenne Nunez, Haley McFadden and Nicci Palumbo and freshmen Madi LoCastro, Makalya Benavidez, Lauren Bostwick, Sabrina "Sas" Long and Madelyn Graham continue their strong play.

Nunez, who is one of the team's speedsters, is batting .337 with 34 hits, 20 RBI, 30 runs and 20 stolen bases. Nunez was 4-for-7 with an RBI and three runs scored against HCC. Nunez has 43 stolen bases in her career.

McFadden is batting .294 with 16 hits, the home run and 17 RBI. McFadden was 4-for-7 with five RBI against HCC.

Palumbo is batting .364 with 28 hits and 11 RBI. Palumbo was 1-for-4 with a run scored against HCC.

LoCastro is doing her job well both at the plate and on the mound. LoCastro is batting .366 with five home runs and 22 RBI while going 6-1 with a 1.50 ERA and 27 strikeouts. LoCastro was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the series against HCC and in game two, she pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.

Although she did not play against HCC, Benavidez is batting .391 with 27 hits, five RBI, 19 runs and eight stolen bases.

Like Nunez, Bostwick also leads the way in baserunning. Bostwick is batting .271 with 19 hits, 11 RBI, 15 runs and 16 stolen bases. Bostwick finished 1-for-5 with an RBI against HCC.

Long is batting .366 with 30 hits, two home runs and 25 RBI. Long was 4-for-7 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored against HCC.

Like LoCastro, Graham possess a significant amount of power. The Bartow native is batting .352 with 19 hits, three homers and 14 RBI despite going 0-for-6 with a run scored against HCC.

Meanwhile on the mound, freshman Kailey Christian continues her consistency on the mound as well as at the plate. Christian is 15-1 with a 1.49 ERA and 135 strikeouts while also batting .353 with 30 hits and 22 RBI. In game one against HCC, Christian threw a complete game giving up one run on one hit with five strikeouts while going 1-for-4.

Scouting SFSC:
The Panthers are coming off of opening their portion of conference play with a sweep over Polk State by scores of 4-0 and 12-1 via mercy rule. Currently, they are in third behind SCF in the Suncoast.

Freshman Jane'a Mobley leads the team at the plate with a .375 batting average, five home runs and 31 RBI. Mobley was 5-for-7 with three doubles and two RBI against Polk State.

Meanwhile, the duo of freshman Baylee Haggard (10-3, 2.23 ERA, 58 Ks) and sophomore Shellby Young (10-2, 1.95 ERA, 37 Ks) combine for 20 of the team's 22 wins. In Haggard's last game, she threw an eight hit shutout with two strikeouts, while for Young she threw a five inning complete game with six strikeouts. Both games were against Polk State.

Series History (2012-present):
As of 2012, the Manatees are 24-5 against the Panthers. Last season, the Manatees swept the Panthers in both series at home and on the road. The Panthers last win over SCF was on March 16, 2016 where they won 4-3 as part of a split series.
