After their matchup with NCAA DIII Western New England was cancelled from rain, the SCF tennis team (3-5, 2-4 Suncoast) were able to put it off with a victory over Broward College (1-4, 1-4 Suncoast) by a score of 7-2. With the win, the Manatees are now 8-6 against the Seahawks.
"It was a really good win today," said head coach Chloe Murphy. "We came in today winning all three doubles, which was the big factor for us. The girls came out and executed with a different mentality in singles when you only got to win two out of the six singles to win."
Beginning with doubles, the duo of sophomore Sara Jamal and freshman Sara Ramirez-Goncalves (3-4) defeated freshmen Dyane Barcena Del Bosque and Angela Rinaldi 8-2 at #1 doubles. This would follow with freshman Zeba Jamal and sophomore Camille Portalier (2-5) to defeat sophomore Vanessa Cozamanis and freshman Giulia Leali 8-3 at #2 doubles before sophomore Diarra Thomas and freshman Britain Botsford (3-4) defeated sophomores Iris Leder and Bar Shimoni 8-6.
"Brie and Cami really stood out in doubles for the team," said Murphy on doubles action. "Brie really stood up and took charge in a tight spot in the last doubles match and Camille had a lot of improvement she needed to do and got the win today she fully deserved."
With SCF claiming all three doubles matches, singles went underway. The Seahawks would claim their first point as Del Bosque defeated Zeba Jamal (1-6) 6-2, 6-1 at #1 singles, but the Manatees would return the favor as Sara Jamal (3-5) defeated Rinaldi 6-1, 6-2 at #2 singles.
With the score 4-1 in favor of SCF, sophomore Laura Illanes-Rodriguez (3-4) would fall from a 6-3 pair decision to Shimoni at #6 singles before Botsford (4-4) would seal the deal as she secured the win for the Manatees with a 6-3 pair decision over Leder at #5 singles.
Both teams continued the final two matches as Portalier (3-5) defeated Leali 6-2, 7-5 at #4 singles before Ramirez-Goncalves (6-0) defeated Cozamanis in three sets by a score 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 at #3 singles.
"Sara (Ramirez-Goncalves) pulled out a big win for the final point," said Murphy on singles action. "Cami and Bri playing two tights matches with Bri clinching the winning point today. It was a really good day for us."
Up Next:
The Manatees remain at home for their next matchup as they welcome Eastern Florida State (3-4, 1-3 Suncoast) for Suncoast action.
"We lost to them 5-4 last time and it was doubles that hurt us," said Murphy on playing EFSC. "We really buckled down on it today, so as long as we step out on our performance tomorrow, good things are gonna come our way."
Just to go off topic a bit, this post was actually my 700th overall.
