SCF Softball Welcomes Broward College for Makeup Date

The SCF softball game (22-8) prepare for their second to last series for non-conference play at home as they welcome Broward College (6-4) to the SCF Softball Complex on Saturday, March 9 at 1 and 3 pm. This is a makeup from February 2 after some miscommunication with the new coaches.

Last Time Out:
The Manatees, who are ranked #5 in the NJCAA Region 8 Softball Coaches' Poll, are coming off of a sweep over Palm Beach State where they won 8-0 in the first game via mercy and 3-2 in the second game in extra innings.

At the plate, the Manatees are still led by a impeccable squad of sophomores Cheyenne Nunez, Haley McFadden and Nicci Palumbo and freshmen Madi LoCastro, Makalya Benavidez, Lauren Bostwick, Sabrina "Sas" Long and Madelyn Graham.

Mainly the speedster on the team, Nunez is batting .326 with 29 hits and 17 RBI while leading the team in runs scored (25) and stolen bases (18). Nunez was 4-for-6 with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases against Palm Beach State.

McFadden is batting .250 with 14 hits and seven RBI. McFadden went 1-for-2 in game two of the series against Palm Beach State.

Palumbo is batting .382 with 26 hits and 10 RBI. Palumbo was 1-for-4 at the plate against Palm Beach State with a run and a stolen base.

One of two hybrid players, LoCastro is batting .352 with 26 hits, five home runs and 22 RBI while going 3-3 with a 2.25 ERA and 15 strikeouts on the mound. LoCastro did not pitch against Palm Beach State, but at the plate she went she was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.

Benavidez is batting .400 with 26 hits, five RBI, 18 runs and eight stolen bases. Benavidez was 1-for-1 against  Palm Beach State.

Following the footsteps of Nunez, Bostwick has also been hot running the bases. Bostwick is batting .237 with 14 hits, eight RBI and 16 stolen bases. Bostwick was 1-for-6 with a run, two RBI and a stolen bases against  Palm Beach State.

Long is batting .346 with 25 hits, two home runs and 20 RBI. Long was 3-for-6 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored against Palm Beach State.

Graham is batting .341 with 14 hits, three home runs and 12 RBI. Graham was 1-for-7 with a home run and two RBI against Palm Beach State.

Freshman Kailey Christian continues her strong consistency on the mound and at the plate. On the mound, Christian is 12-1 with a 1.65 ERA, 115 strikeouts and four shutouts while at the plate she is batting .387 with 29 hits and 20 RBI. Christian is the fourth Manatee under the Schuerman era to throw at least 100 strikeouts (2015: Devon Morrison [122] and Jill McElderry [112], 2017: Carlee Lucas [104]). Against Palm Beach State, Christian threw 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Scouting Broward:
The Seahawks are coming off of a 10-1 losses to South Florida State College.

Sophomore Grasy Gomez leads the team with three home runs and is batting .529 while on the mound, freshman Bridgette Tuxburuy is 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA and eight strikeouts.

Series History (2012-present):
The Manatees are 5-0 against the Seahawks. Last time both teams met was on February 16, 2018 where the Manatees swept the Seahawks by score of 9-4 and 10-2.
