The FGCU softball team (8-9) snapped a four-game losing streak Sunday afternoon taking down San Diego (7-10) by a score of 6-5 at the USD Softball Complex.
"The team did a great job coming back after giving up the lead," head coach David Deiros said. "They showed how resilient they are."
After a scoreless first frame for both teams, FGCU got on the board producing a three-run second inning. Sophomore Haley Morrell started the frame with a walk then moved over to second on a grounder. Freshman Kyleigh Taylor dug in and laced a single through the left side as Marcella Parrado hit an RBI double to put runners on second and third. Pinch-hitter junior Morgan Greco would single up the middle for the 3-0 margin.
Over the next two frames, the home side manufactured one run in the third, followed by a four-run fourth to take a 5-3 advantage.
Down two runs now, the rally from FGCU started in the sixth. With one out, sophomore Ahnie Jumper and Parrado connected on back-to-back singles. Kate Kelly added the frame's third hit to score Jumper as Kelly went to second with Parrado being caught at third. Freshman McKenna Batterton's knock put runners on the corners, setting up senior Racquel Fournet to clear the bases with a double to right for the 6-5 lead. This was Fournet's 51st career double with FGCU.
Senior Riley Randolph, who entered the contest in the fourth, retired the side in the seventh to secure the 6-5 win for FGCU. She allowed no hits in her four innings of work, striking out seven batters in the process, moving to 6-5 overall
Fournet finished the contest going 2-for-4 with two RBI as Greco ended her day at the plate going 1-for-1 with two RBI. Batterton notched three hits in her four at-bats.
