The FGCU softball team (7-9) dropped a 6-3 contest to Boise State (13-2), who is receiving votes, surrendering five runs in the seventh to end day two of the San Diego Classic.
"Really proud of our players tonight, they literally and figuratively sacrificed their bodies for the team tonight," head coach David Deiros said. "We lost a lot of players tonight even before the game started, and we were one out away from beating a very good team. Looking forward to building on this effort."
The Eagles were originally scheduled to play San Jose State and Long Beach State but after multiple weather delays, FGCU played its lone contest tonight versus Boise State.
Junior Mikenzie Vaughn put FGCU ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second. After freshman Reedy Davenport, who singled, advanced to second on a grounder, Vaughn's base hit allowed her to come home after a fielding error in left. Davenport was once again in the mix this time in the fourth. Lacing a one-out double, sophomore Haley Morrell brought the freshman home with a single to right.
Boise State scratched its first run across the board in the top of the fifth but the Green and Blue matched it with a run of its own in the bottom half. Sophomore Farley Callaghan commenced the inning getting plunked as junior Morgan Greco pinch ran for her. Two batters later with two outs, senior Racquel Fournet roped a double to left, scoring Greco.
Ahead 3-1 going to the top of the seventh, trouble began to brew for the Eagles. The Broncos loaded the bases with one out using three singles. A pop fly to short made it two outs, but BSU's Ashlyn Adams connected on a bases-clearing triple for the 4-3 advantage. BSU would tack on two more to cap off the five-run seventh.
FGCU collected one hit in the seventh as a 6-4-3 double play ended the ball game.
Starting pitcher Riley Randolph moves to 5-5 in the losing effort, scattering 10 hits while striking out nine batters and allowing just two walks.
With her double, Fournet passed Cheyenne Jenks (49, 2006-09) and Courtney Platt (49, 2008-11) as the all-time leader in career doubles.
