The FGCU women's tennis team (5-6, 0-1 A-SUN) managed to get back on track as they defeated Chattanooga (7-4) 6-1 in their first ever matchup.
"The girl's energy today was great," said head coach Courtney Vernon. "I'm pleased with how they're supporting each other and we're looking forward to getting back to work tomorrow."
Beginning with doubles, the duo of junior Maja Ornberg and senior Julia Ascua (6-5) defeated the team of senior Delaney Edwards and sophomore Emma Van Hee 6-4 at #1 doubles before junior Sofia Perez and senior Laura Falceto-Font (1-0) defeated freshman Lilly Holmes and senior Annie Tarwater 6-4 at #2 doubles thus clinching the doubles point. Despite the Eagles clinching the point, redshirt sophomore Sara Kelly and senior Patricia Villar (5-1) defeated senior Caroline Hall and sophomore Bogdona Zaporozhets 7-6 (11-9) at #3 doubles.
Heading into singles, Ornberg (7-4) would give the Eagles the first match point at #1 singles as she quickly defeated Zaporozhets 6-4, 6-0. Kelly (4-5) would then follow with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Polina Goloputova at #2 singles before Villar (2-1) sealed the deal with 6-1, 6-2 win of her own against Edwards at #4 singles, thus claiming the match for FGCU.
Both teams decided to finish the final three matches as Falceto-Font (3-6) defeated Van Hee 6-4, 6-3 at #5 singles, before the Mocs earned their first point of the match as freshman Ariana Chan (0-1) fell to freshman Anna Didkovskaya 1-6, 6-4, 12-14 at #6 singles . Chan was making her FGCU debut after graduating from Colegio Internacional Pert (English: Pert International School).
Ascua (6-5) would finish the final match at #3 singles as she defeated Hall with a 6-4 pair decision.

The Eagles resume A-SUN Conference play as they welcome A-SUN newcomer Liberty (5-5) on Sunday, March 17 at 10 am. Coincidentally, the Flames will play Chattanooga on Thursday morning, March 14 at 10 am prior to playing FGCU.
