SCF Softball Splits vs El Paso CC

The SCF softball team (29-7, 4-0 Suncoast) wrapped up their final non-conference doubleheader as they split with El Paso Community College (8-14) with a 5-1 win in game one before losing 6-2 in game two. With the split, the Manatees are 6-2 against the Tejanas.

"El Paso is a great team," said Schuerman. "We were able to win game 1 with Ashlee (Zientek) on the mound, but game 2 we just left too many base runners on the bases (12 in fact). They had some key hits when they needed them and we just didn’t today. Overall, we got to see some girls take on some new positions and work towards making the team better do it was a successful day all together."

Game One:
SCF head coach Mandy Schuerman sent freshman Ashlee Zientek to the mound, while El Paso CC head coach Kathryn Gutierrez sent sophomore Athena Muniz.

After a scoreless first, the Manatees would be the first to score in the bottom of the second. After loading the bases with walks drawn by freshmen Madi LoCastro and Lexi Bridges and freshman Madison Yoder reaching on fielding error, freshman Lauren Bostwick would ground into a fielder's choice and send LoCastro home to make it 1-0 SCF. Soon sophomore Kyria Holcomb would send Bostwick and Yoder home to make it 3-0 SCF.

The Tejanas would then get on the board with an RBI double from Muniz at the top of the third while holding the Manatees scoreless in the bottom half, but the Manatees answer back in the bottom of the fourth. Beginning with a leadoff walk drawn by sophomore Sydney Parks before she stole second, Holcomb would send Parks home with an RBI single. After sophomore Megan Seeds drew a walk, freshman Sabrina Long would hit a single to left and send Holcomb home to make it 5-1 SCF, which would then result to the win.

Zientek would be credited with her sixth win of the season after throwing complete game, giving up one run on five hits while walking three and striking out two. Zientek is now at 6-3 for the season.

Muniz would earn her fifth loss after giving up all five runs on five hits while walking five batters. Muniz would drop to 4-5 on the season.

Holcomb would be the only Manatee in game one with a multi-hit and multi-RBI game as she finished 3-for-4 with three RBI. Long (1-for-3, one RBI) and Parks (1-for-2, one run scored) would get the Manatees' other two hits.

Sophomore Brittany Santellanes was the only Tejana with a multi-hit game in game one after going 2-for-3.

Game Two:
Schuerman sent Seeds to the mound, while Gutierrez sent freshman Katelyn Cifuentes to counter.

SCF was able to score first in the bottom of the first. After a one out single from Seeds and freshman Madelyn Graham reaching first on an error, sophomore Haley McFadden would send them home with a double to make it 2-0 SCF, but that was all they could produce as the Tejanas scored three runs at the top of the second to take the lead with a three run shot by sophomore Nazareth Fierro. It was her third home run of the season.

The Tejanas continued to hit off Seeds at the top of the fourth from a Cifuentes sacrifice fly and at the top of the sixth from a Cifuentes RBI double and an RBI groundout from freshman Dalyse Whiteside before pulling away with the win.

Seeds would be credited with her second loss of the season after throwing a complete game, giving up all six runs (four earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out three. Seeds also went 1-for-3 at the plate.

Cifuentes would earn her fourth win of the season, putting her at 4-6. Cifuentes gave up both runs on
eight hits while walking five and striking out two.

Sophomore Cheyenne Nunez was 2-for-4 while joining Holcomb, who was also 2-for-4. Holcomb would finish 5-for-8 with three RBI.

"Kyria is a great player," said Schuerman on Holcomb. "We were able to make things happen without her, but now with Nicci (Palumbo) out of the line up Kyria had the opportunity to get back in the line up and has produced."

McFadden would finish 1-for-3 with the two-RBI double.

Seeds and freshmen Madison Yoder and Makayla Benavidez would also get the Manatees three other hits.

Fun Fact:
SCF this season is 16-4 when scoring the first run in any inning.

Up Next:
The Manatees return to Suncoast Conference play as they travel to St. Petersburg to take on St. Pete College (19-14, 1-3 Suncoast) on Tuesday night, March 19 at 5 and 7 pm at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.

"We can expect a tough series," said Schuerman on SPC. "They are a good team and we will have to compete every pitch."
