SCF Softball Sweeps Broward College at Home

The SCF softball team (24-8) wrapped up their second-to-last non-conference matchup of their 12-game homestead as they defeated Broward College (6-6) 8-3 in game one and 7-1 in game two. With the wins, the Manatees are now 7-0 against the Seahawks.

"We had a solid pitching and catching performance in both games," said head coach Mandy Schuerman. "We also mixed in some timely hitting. Lauren (Bostwick) was on fire at the plate and we sprinkled in some great hits from Maddy (Graham), Haley (McFadden) and Cheyenne (Nunez)."

Game One:
For game one, Schuerman sent freshman Kailey Christian to the mound while Broward head coach Devin Higginbotham sent sophomore Bridgette Tuxbury to counter.

After a scoreless first inning, the Manatees were the first to score a run in the bottom of the second after freshman Lauren Bostwick hit an RBI single that sent sophomore Nicci Palumbo home to make it 1-0 SCF. By the bottom of third, the Manatees continued to add to the scoreboard as sophomore Haley McFadden hit a two-run shot to left to make it 3-0 SCF. It was McFadden's first home run of the season.

While the bats were going strong for SCF, Christian continued to do her job on the mound as she threw six strikeouts in the first three innings.

After SCF made it 4-0 from a sacrifice fly by Christian the sent freshman Madi LoCastro home in the bottom of the fourth, Broward would get on the board as sophomore Cayley Gottschall hit an RBI single at the top of the fifth, but the Manatees would not stop the onslaught of scoring in the bottom half. Beginning with a leadoff double from freshman Madelyn Graham before sophomore Megan Seeds came in to pinch run and moved to third on a McFadden sacrifice bunt, sophomore Cheyenne Nunez would send Seeds home on a fielder's choice to make it 5-1 SCF. After Palumbo drew a walk, freshman Sabrina Long would send Nunez and Palumbo home with a double before Bostwick drove Long home with an RBI double of her own to make it 8-1 SCF.

The Seahawks would add two more runs to the scoreboard at the top of the seventh from two Manatee errors, but it was all that they could provide as SCF pulled away with the win.

Christian would end up with her 13th win of the season, putting her at 13-1 after throwing a complete game, giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits while walking two and striking out a season-high 14 strikeouts. Christian did add one RBI despite going 0-for-3.

"Kailey has given us the chance to win every time she has pitched and that is really all we can ask from her," said Schuerman on Christian's performance.

Tuxbury would earn the loss after throwing six innings, giving up all eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits while walking two and striking out two.

Graham (3-for-4) and Bostwick (3-for-3) had three hits each. Graham added a run while Bostwick added two RBI.

McFadden's home run in the third inning was her first collegiate home run in her career as she finished 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Long also finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.

*Personal Note: To be honest, while I was working at my job in Sarasota, I predicted that McFadden was going to hit a home run but I didn't know when.

Gottschall and fellow sophomores Sami Kelley and Haley Hendricks had the Seahawks lone hits.

Game Two:
For game two, Schuerman sent LoCastro to the mound while Higginbotham sent sophomore Raquel Galvan to counter.

After both LoCastro and Galvan held each other scoreless, the Manatees would get Galvan to buckle in the bottom of the third. Beginning with a leadoff double from Bostwick, before sophomore Sydney Parks and Nunez drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, Christian would bring in Bostwick with a bases loaded walk to get the Manatees on the board first. This would then be followed by a two-RBI double off the bat off Graham that sent Parks and Nunez home to make it 3-0 SCF before McFadden hit an RBI groundout to send Christian home to make it 4-0 SCF.

At the top of the fifth, the Seahawks would get on the board on a McFadden fielding error while holding the Manatees scoreless, but it was short lived as the Manatees continued to add runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth. McFadden would begin with a lead-off single before freshman Makayla Benavidez came in to pinch run and advance to second on a failed pickoff attempt before Palumbo sent Benavidez home with an RBI double. It didn't take for the Manatees to score another run as Long sent Palumbo home with a triple before Nunez sent Long home with a final RBI single to make it 7-1 SCF for the win.

LoCastro would end up with her fourth win of the season after throwing a complete game, giving up one run on two hits with four strikeouts.

Galvan would earn the loss after throwing 5.1 innings, giving up all seven runs on seven hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Tuxbury threw two-thirds of a scoreless inning.

Graham was the only Manatee in game two with multi-hit and multi-RBI game as she finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Graham finished 5-for-7 in the series with two RBI.

Nunez finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases and finished 1-for-5 with two RBI in the series, McFadden finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and 2-for-5 with three RBI in the series and Bostwick was 1-for-3 with a run score and finished 4-for-7 with two RBI.

Kelley and sophomore Grasy Gomez had the Seahawks lone hits in game two.

Up Next:
The Manatees are set to open conference in the final two games of their 12-game homestead as they welcome Hillsborough Community College (10-11) to the SCF Softball Complex on Tuesday, January 12 at 5 and 7 pm. Schuerman will be going for her 50th Suncoast Conference win.

"As far as HCC and conference play goes, we are ready," said Schuerman on facing HCC.  "We have played some close scoring games to prepare for the intensity. We have also been working hard to get an inch better each day. We are ready for conference and going in on a high note."
